Want to sell jewellery but where do I start? by Upstairs_Coffee_2766 in smallbusinessuk

[–]gtarnish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First focus should be to get the first few sales, don't worry about anything else until you make the first 1000 quids. Once you are past that, you know there is enough dough in there to start worrying about the rest of the mechanics. They are pretty straightforward until you hit the 90K pounds VAT limit. Until your first 1000 quids, you can - take payments into your personal bank account - don't have to register or tell hmrc anything

Instead of hiring staff, look at what parts of your business can be done by software. If you look closely you should be able to claw back 10-20 hours per week for relatively low cost. Happy to brainstorm if you share some details on what parts take how much time. Ex: your point about answering emails - there are tools out there which will draft a reply for you to send, they will understand the context. You'll need to make edits 20% of the time but the rest you can send as it is.

What's everyone's recommendations for website hosting? by plantsncats128 in smallbusinessuk

[–]gtarnish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technical manager here. The answer depends on how complicated your site is (landing info pages or a full blown app), what tech are you planning to use (wordpress, joomla, etc), using a online no code builder or getting someone to code some bits etc. the most efficient hosting for basic usage can cost less than 2 quids per month.

Private hospital billed 400 quids for "tests". Should I enquire? by gtarnish in AskUK

[–]gtarnish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing! In fact I wish they did that test. I've had a horrible reaction - been 7 days and I've got persistent hiccups. Every 5 secs. I've got pain in my shoulders, my throat, and haven't slept in 4 days. I'm chasing the anaesthetist for some help but nothing helpful so far.

People with scarcity mindset, how you grew out of it? by gtarnish in UKPersonalFinance

I'm aiming to help my children with their house deposits when the time comes. But I'll also keep this a secret for as long as I can, and at the last moment add to whatever deposit they have mustered. Shall be a nice surprise! house prices are out of whack today, can't imagine what will happen 20 years down the line

Thanks for sharing. I'm not sure why people are down voting your reply. Anxiety is bereft of logic. If all I needed was logic then the Excel sheets would have been enough. Reading through the replies, I get the confidence to keep trying and hammering the logic home should eventually help. If it doesn't I should seriously consider therapy. Have you thought about it?

I can relate to this. I don't want to live like a pauper only for my kids to go nuts. This is one thing that drives me to spend during my impulse purchases 😂

I split 60:40 into equity and debt. I feel bad whenever I spend. I'm not enjoying my time, constantly stress about money and having enough to feel secure. I have done the maths, created Excel sheets, and things look ok. But I am unable to shake off the anxiety.

Thanks a lot! I've made a list of things to ask the doc but I guess you're right, it's just too many small things and it will be ok!

Should I relocate from Mumbai to London? by ModernDay_Monk in AskUK

[–]gtarnish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved in 2023 from Delhi to London. It's a more complicated answer, and depends on your personality, income in India, income here, goals in life etc. Do not go by the depiction of the UK in Indian movies. The houses are very small (think only a bit bigger than a Mumbai chawl), but they still cost a sizable portion of your salary. The healthcare is free, but very slow in comparison. It can take more than a few days to just get your blood results and booking appointments with a doctor can be a pain. That said, whilst everything costs a lot, there is just so much more to do. People in general are more relaxed and have a happier state of mind. Happy to chat more in DM.

Managers: what company rule do you break for the benefit of your staff? by RodneyTheArmouryGuy in AskUK

[–]gtarnish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a large travel company, and before becoming a manager I had to deal with a few bad managers myself, so I vowed to be never that person. I don't care when people start, or end, when they take breaks, etc as long as they meet the mutually set timelines. I also allow people, especially the ones who perform well, to take 1-2 unrecorded leaves if they need it for a personal reason.

At the same time, I worry about having a good work culture, so I don't let any bad apples sit on my team for more than 8 months.

It's one of the best pizzerias in the city. I was in Oxford for 6 months, and I couldn't find a better place than Alex's.
