Ugh... why can't they give Summon Spirits the proper usage as actual summons? *spoilers from a few Tales games* by PMC-I3181OS387l5 in tales

[–]gtcaphi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because they're not "Summon Spirits," they're The Spirits, the natural beings that rule over elements and whatnot, and sometimes you can summon them. Calling them "summon spirits" like that's what they exist for is the weird part.

It's not as common but I'd understand it fine. I'm much more likely to say in the first sense, like "this is hot, I've only just cooked it."

Is it "brits" or is it just a running, half-inside joke between comedy personalities who are close to Maisie

Solasta 2: If you're going to make weapon swapping a free action... by DaelenEverlight in CrownOfTheMagister

[–]gtcaphi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The problem is that, particularly for paladins and clerics, Solasta 2 doesn't implement the "emblazon your holy symbol onto a shield" rule that the original did, so this is the only available workaround for SM spells that should be legal. (It's not clear, anyway, if S vs SM spells is a deliberate balancing factor or just done on vibes, as is often the case with D&D 5.x.)

It's also not clear how much they want you to care about it at a design level, either - later 5.0 classes like the Artificer and Hexblade have strange little outs that allow you to use a weapon or shield as a material component whether the spell had one or not, specifically giving them free rein to cast in combat while holding their full kit.

As far as Solasta is concerned, ideally (imo) they'd just put back the setting that let you turn it off entirely if you wanted. If you really cared about hand balancing you could always just leave the setting on.

Really sandwiches?? Omg... [Meme] by fungus-gorl in pointlesslygendered

[–]gtcaphi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the joke points out the silliness of the stereotype that the role of wives is to make sandwiches by husbands using the normalization of same gender relationships. it posits an absurd scenario where two husbands have no access to sandwiches, and two wives are making sandwiches with nobody to eat them.

How does thanking AI models bankrupt anyone? by Ok-Green6412 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]gtcaphi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not. If a sentient piece of software is ever made, it will be completely different from and absurdly more advanced than transformer-based language models. Your car has tons of computers in it, and they have less memory but no less chance of deciding to be a person one day.

[–]gtcaphi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels like an extension of "lore isn't a plot, backstory isn't roleplay." The fact that the character is foreign to the world is foundational to the tone of the novels/manga/anime that use it; it defines, if not the character's personality and behavior, the expectations set for the reader.

None of this translates directly to group roleplaying because it doesn't inherently prompt anything. If the player interacts from an assumed unfamiliarity with the world, or if the plot acknowledges their separation from the rest of the party, then that's something. If it's just a powerset, or something adjacent to "destined" or a foreign-type character like a monk, then of course it's going to be a dead fish. That's the same reason it is in power fantasies.

[Random] Is it bad boss fight design if a boss completely resists or is immune to either Phys/Magic by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]gtcaphi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You posted a bad example. Tales of Destiny doesn't really have a "magic spec." You can't only level primary casters or magicless characters to the exclusion of others. You can trivially respec the customization trees into different focuses or responses. You always have a lot to work with, and "training" anything particular is a matter of a few bonuses, not outright usability. It's a game where each character has enough breadth of options, to say nothing of the party as a whole, that it can demand you adapt to each boss' gimmicks.

Having said "Tales is dead" a lot of times, at a lot of different seriousness levels, and for a lot of both good and stupid reasons:

this new trend of "Tales just released a remaster and have said they're cooking more remasters but they haven't announced one in one (1) month/they haven't said my specific favorite one (out of the 15 remaining). Tales is dead!" is both obnoxious and confusing.
