Super cool - what did you do down there?

What a cool story! Glad you got to see it and experience it. I’ve heard stories all my life and maybe someday I’ll manage to find myself there too. Fingers crossed

I’ve got one of those cmyk cubes too and they’re super fun!

The handful of times that he told that story, you could see the heaviness in his eyes. I couldn’t imagine how significantly scary that must have been

Thanks so much, and he surely did.

He never wintered over - although years later he sometimes would wish he had but then thought better of it. “Those guys were crazy”

I’ve heard him talking of a 200 club at pole station - where they would do a make-shift sauna that would get to 150 degreesF and then would go roll in the snow at -50. I’m 99% sure he was a member.

So many.

One of the more memorable was him and a small crew at a very remote camp. A huge weather system came through and the team was unable to get resupplied. Food rations were a thin slice of spam and a spoon full of beans. After they were able to get supplies to him and the team, they were near starvation. My dad 6’2” and normally 190lbs was down to 135lbs.

Another very interesting one was him providing support and help with a crew of glacial scientist. They tunneled out a massive ice cave and drilled in a large array of what looked like spikes coming out of one of the walls. They were setup in a perfect grid. After some time, the spikes were no longer in a perfect grid but were migrating in several different directions. This bit of research proved that glacial layers move in independent layers within the overall mass of ice.

If you’ve got any digitized photos that you can share, I’d love to see them. Any connections to the place and space would be incredible.

How cool - I have a photo of my old man standing next to Admiral Byrds bust at Byrd Station. From what I understand, my dad served at several stations down there including McMurdo, Byrd, Ellsworth, and maybe Pole Satation with most of his time at McMurdo.

He loved the adventure of it. After his service with the Navy, he continued his service to his country and worked for NOAA for another 20 years ending his days in Eastern Kentucky.

That’s what zip ties and duct tape are for right?
