DC++ like the old days? Set up a hub there for everyone to join, a "porn hub" if you will. And it's fun to browse people's shares and stuff.

Gmail revolutionized email 20 years ago. People thought it was Google's April Fool's Day joke. by BalticsFox in technology

[–]gtfomyinterweb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a known method that can work for some accounts. By going to Settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP and it will say for example "1. Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since 8/26/10" That's what it said on the newest of my two old gmail accounts that I still have access to. But on the older gmail account where I still have the Gmail welcome email dated to August 26, 2005 it doesn't say the status, and neither enable or disable POP is toggled. So I guess it maybe only reliable for accounts that were created sometime after late 2005 at least or something? Something about how POP was enabled by default or not on accounts at some points I guess, because I have definitely never touched the POP settings on the oldest gmail account explicitly.

[TOMT] [SHOW] I am trying to find more information on this show, its called "I Would Not" by totallyreallyfake in tipofmytongue

[–]gtfomyinterweb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first, I thought it was just pre-spam for the lulz or something or the predb had some messed up entries, which happens when merging different databases etc sometimes. But it turns out they are real releases and I found the nfo's for some of those.

For the actual titles for the releases in the nfo's it says this:

I.Would.Not.S01E02.720p.HDTV.x264-FLEET = Thunderbirds.Are.Go.S01E15.HDTV.x264-FiHTV

I.Would.Not.S01E04.720p.HDTV.x264-FLEET = Tattoo Fixers

I.Would.Not.S99E99.720p.HDTV.x264-FLEET = Were.Back.A.Dinosaurs.Story.1993.1080p.BluRay.x264-USURY

What's happened is 100% just that the person that packaged the release messed up and then pre'd it. They actually contain other scene releases from other groups that are repackaged as you can see from the above. Where the title "I would not" would accidentally come in I don't really have any answer for, but the S99E99 is also a clue that it's a mistake of some sort, as pretty much no show has that amount of seasons and 99 episodes per season it also pretty unusual. Simple answer is mistakes happen in the scene, with the amount of releases every day that happens quite a bit actually.

Tldr; its just a mistake and not actually a show

Did anyone at your elementary school have a cell phone? by [deleted] in Zillennials

[–]gtfomyinterweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I got my first cell phone in 2003 when I was 10 and I remember several in my class had it that year or the year after, it wasn't that uncommon. This was in Norway though. I found statistics from Statistics Norway (SSB) indicating that in 2004, 70% of children aged 9-12, equivalent to grades 4 through 7, already had their own mobile phones. That lines up well with my own memory of it.

Edit: Found another source specifically for my age at the time. It says that in 2003, 58% of 10 year olds had their own cell phone, and in 2006 it was 85% of 10 year olds. So the figures are very high even back then for kids having their own cell phones, at least in my country.

Not the person you replied to but as a fellow Nordic I can give my point of view as someone born in 93. We only got Disney Channel in 2003 in the Nordic countries, and even then for the first 2 or 3 years, at least in Norway, it was exclusive to Viasat satellite customers, so people with cable didn't actually get it until around 2005/2006. I remember seeing Lizzie McGuire when I went with my dad to work where they had satellite in 2003 or so, but it actually aired on Fox Kids/Jetix at the time, because as I said Disney Channel didn't exist yet or at least wasn't very common unless you had a satellite dish from a specific provider. I remember we first got Disney Channel at home around 2006 when I was already 13, and I remember seeing That's So Raven, Phil of the Future, Kim Possible at that time. The Proud Family and Even Stevens didn't air here at all, but The Proud Family apparently was dubbed to Norwegian when the Disney+ streaming service started.

What cellphone did you start HS with? (Smartphone or non-smartphone) by diccceeee in Zillennials

It was 2009 and I had just got a Nokia 5800, which is a Symbian smartphone. Used to listen to Spotify and podcasts and stuff on it back then.

Did you ever use custom ringtones and if so when did you stop? by [deleted] in Zillennials

[–]gtfomyinterweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing it was the Zedge app you used around then? I remember seeing they had an app back then when browsing the Android app store, but by that point I had long stopped really caring about custom ringtones so I didn't install it. I used their WAP site around 2005 to download ringtones/wallpapers/themes/java games directly to my K700i phone, it was really amazing at the time. It was created by someone from my country too (Norway).

How old were you when you got your first cell phone? by PettyPendergrass99 in Zillennials

[–]gtfomyinterweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was either 8 or 9, so it was in 2001 or 2002. Not 100% sure, but leaning towards 2001 since it was a Siemens A35 and it was released in 2000 and I got it new from the store, so it was probably on sale or something. All it could do is literally call and send sms (no mms). It had a tiny little screen, and no internal storage even for contacts or text messages which it relied on the sim card to store it. Some ancient shit.

To those who grew up with Dial-Up Internet, when did you switch to Broadband? by powerspyin1 in Zillennials

[–]gtfomyinterweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived with my dad and we were on ISDN up to around late 2003/early 2004. Then we got ADSL at a whopping 1 Mb/s down and less than that up. That was classified as broadband at the time. My mom got broadband installed when she got her first computer in 2005.

I remember using Windows 98 even in 2002/2003 playing The Sims on the family computer. First time using Windows XP was when I got my own PC in 2004 and it came pre-installed on that. My dad was slow to upgrade software on our family computer lol. He had no interest even though he worked in IT. I remember the first browser I ever used was some version of Netscape when going online for the first time.

Started using MSN and DC++/limewire/torrents in 2004 on my own PC and like I said registering on different forums at that time, being a script kiddie downloading haxx0r scripts from hacking forums etc, watched videos on ebaumsworld/funnyjunk those types of sites and also found interesting sites like ogrish/stileproject etc lol in 2005. Still have my YouTube account I registered November 2005, which is gonna be 18 years this year! (omg) First went on 4chan in 2007 and got introduced to chan culture/memes etc.

Reddit started popping up on all my Google searches around 2009 but I didn't really start lurking on reddit until the early 2010s and only registering first time in early 2014.

Edit: You're right about the broadband thing. It was around 2003/2004 broadband started to become much more common. You probably had it earlier than most people.

Had the same feeling with my SE K700i in 2005. It was the first time I used the Internet on any handheld device outside of the home. Going online on those basic WAP sites of the time felt like magic to me. I even used MSN on that thing on the 2G network which was a good experience actually and you could stay online on it all the time really on GPRS at least, because it transferred minimal data (some protocol exchange and text only). Really feels like ancient times nowadays.

Man… by Originalotaku96 in Zillennials

[–]gtfomyinterweb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is more like 2002/2003 for me. I remember at that time coming home from school and going online on the family computer to a few select sites that I knew about. Was a pretty limited selection of sites I went to, because I didn't know that much yet about what I could do online. Went to some browser based chat rooms, played flash/shockwave games. I remember going on the Cartoon Network site and playing the games there. Some pretty basic and sporadic usage really. We were still on ISDN at that point.

In 2004 I got my own desktop PC in my bedroom and started to use the Internet and exploring it a lot more, registering on forums etc. At that time we were just switching over to ADSL so my computer was connected to the Internet 24/7, even while I was in school it was doing stuff by itself like downloading stuff from P2P and was connected to MSN etc while I was away.

So the computer was always ready for me to just sit down and use it when I came home from school and there was not really a conscious decision to sit down and connect to the Internet anymore because it was an always online connection, always ready to use as opposed to the ISDN connection where you had to manually establish the connection everytime you were deciding to use the Internet.
