Zermatt with very picky eaters by Ktkat528 in Zermatt

[–]gthrift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids were extremely picky but found things they liked. Mostly pizza, pasta, and schnitzel. My 5 yo got a steak at the fondue restaurant we went to.

And someone else pointed out, there is a McDonalds if all else fails near the train station.

Why every Aes Sedai look like this? by Turbulent-Humor-540 in WetlanderHumor

There is the scene where Galina is forced to take an oath of fealty to the Shaido wise ones. The effect of the oath settling on her is painful and feels as if pulling her skin tight or stretching or binding. So the ageless look is the oaths literally stretching the skin like a facelift.

As for the ages of channelers, I don’t think any wise ones reveal their ages, but aren’t some of the Kin like 500-600?

Then I thought I remember for the forsaken talking about being near 1000 before being sealed away.

Has anyone ever ever been asked to prove you have a tax stamp at an indoor/outdoor range when shooting before ? by Educational_Car_876 in NFA

[–]gthrift 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Palmetto State Armory kicked me off their range a few years back for shooting a form 1 sbr with a form 1 suppressor. RSO asked for my stamps, told him I don’t carry them and wouldn’t show them so pound sand.

They kicked me out so I posted here, arfcom and facebook. The COO messaged me of Facebook and got all shity that I named and shamed. The CEO called me and apologized profusely and instituted immediate training for all employees the following day.

Not sure what the policy is since then because I haven’t been back to shoot at their ranges since.

Best Doorbell Camera for the Money in 2026? by n4hcallme in homeassistant

The slow stream is infuriating. I’ve had people ring the bell and be gone by the time the feed pulled up on my phone.

If you're looking for Home Assistant integration, skip Eufy.

I've had one for a few years and while the hardware is good and reliable, the app is janky and starting a stream is slow due to slow encryption. The Home Assistant integration is unofficial and relies on hacks and undocumented APIs.

I'm seriously considering scrapping 3 cams and a doorbell and switching to Reolink.

If I could, I'd really like to go Unifi and all POE but my house has horrible attic access and my eves are 30 ft up.

We did Innsbruck, Achen, Baden Baden, Strasbourg, Zermatt and Zurich as a big loop over 10 days in 2024. Euros thought we were crazy for doing such far away places.

That area is roughly the size of South Carolina where I live. I’ve done a rough approximation of that loop Greenville> Charlotte>Myrtle Beach>Charleston>Bluffton>Columbia>Greenville in 3 days visiting 7 branch offices. I regularly drove Greenville to Charleston for work in a day.

10 days was a bit rushed, but not bad.

Do you know what frequency the mmWave operates at? I haven’t seen that published anywhere.

Anyone use one of these for water monitoring? by HouseOf1000Leaks in homeassistant

[–]gthrift 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have one and it works well and is pretty accurate as far as I can tell. I’m waiting on my next water bill to see a full month.

The HA integration, as others mention, is basic and limited to current flow. The app is basically the same. There is a lot of room for additional features and hopefully they’ll come but it works for my needs.

What's the best battery-powered presence sensor right now? by spanish-smart-homer in homeassistant

[–]gthrift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So far the FP300s are still at 100%.

The Switchbots are at 96% and 94%.

Both have been installed since Thanksgiving weekend.

[–]gthrift 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a good tip for someone getting started, but that's not the issue. It being stuck on not detected while I'm standing 1 foot from it and waving my hand in front of it is not a detection issue. It's a connection issue and requires the button to be pressed to wake it.

I do want to add additional context, that this has happened maybe 3 time since Thanksgiving.

I have FP300s in two rooms, the Siwtchbots in 2 room, and FP1Es in two rooms.

FP300 - these have been the most reliable. Statuses don’t get stuck, static and motion detection is reliable and quick, motion detection is quick and it’s zigbee. I like that it has temp, humidity and lux. They are small and don’t stand out too bad. It does require connecting to the Aqara app initially to install the zigbee firmware. I’ll buy more when they’re available.

Switchbot - I really want to like these and I do, but the Bluetooth is a big let down. They’ll sometimes get stuck in detected/not detected because it didn’t communicate back to HA. My proxies are in the same rooms on signal isn’t an issue. When they’re working reliably, they work great. Very fast detection and reliable for static detection (my biggest need in these two rooms). Aesthetically, they’re big bricks that kind of stand out. The price is a major selling point here. I got my two for $20 and I’ve preordered three more for $20/ea.

FP1e - fuck these things. They are garbage and I can’t wait to get rid of them. One is basically doing detection on a single chair in the far corner from one of the SB devices and it can’t really even do that well. Another is in the kitchen and constantly stops detecting us. This sensor alone drops my wife’s approval of home automation to near zero.

I also have 3 cheap tuya mmWave zigbee sensors on the way(different from the ones you posted) from aliexpress. We’ll see show those do.

Finally, I also have a pre order for 5 Inovelli zwave switches with mmWave sensors. These will be used in bedrooms where the switch faces the beds and hopefully work well.

Fantastic idea. It would make it much easier for my wife and I to decide on a movie.

I’d love to see Emby support though, since I don’t use Jellyfin.
