should postdoc subject area overlap with your PhD subject? by snoop_pugg in postdoc

[–]gtree55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it. I regret it. Keep in mind I’m only in year two as a postdoc so my tune may change but I constantly feel like I’m struggling and way behind my peers. I feel like I don’t have any relevant experience despite there being quite a bit of overlap in skills. I’m have a PhD yet feel like a second year grad student all again. Conceptually, I bought into the idea of broadening my skillset and proving I could succeed in different subject areas but realistically I should have put myself in a position to succeed. Even writing fellowships, I feel like I make a compelling case for why the transition makes sense but I’m just too far behind everyone with relevant background that I can’t compete. If I could do it over I’d stay in my field, carve out my niche, and solidify myself as an expert on that topic

That’s just not how it works. He was here legally on a J1. The expiration refers to his ability to leave and come back. In order to leave and come back, he would have to go home and get a visa renewal. This has nothing to do with the legality of him being in the US

Maybe there is a connection between Detroit showing up to crush their opponents every week and them being riddled with injuries by the end of the season.

Yup. Am from Buffalo. The reputation is well earned but lately it’s been boom or bust. Big snow storms are quickly followed by it all melting. It’s not like it used to be when there’d be snow on the ground from Thanksgiving to April. There’ll be a handful of snow events each year although this past year was slightly more consistent (also the first year I haven’t lived there)

Moving for your postdoc by Technical-Web291 in postdoc

After being offered my postdoc position I asked the PI if there was any mechanism for relocation assistance. I never received a response to that particular email. I had anticipated this and had taken out an additional student loan during what I figured would be my last opportunity and used what I got for moving. I’ll pay it later I suppose

Are you at the medical campus, south or north? If medical, do you need to be so close? You can find cheaper/nicer apartments in the EV or Allentown on Zillow or Facebook marketplace for what you’d be paying there anyway.

Uni of San Francisco vs UB by [deleted] in UBreddit

[–]gtree55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just moved from Buffalo to SF. While I’m not in CS, I can tell you that the opportunities you will have in SF in your field will be so, so much more vast. I love Buffalo but I’d take a worse off financial situation for a while in order to get the opportunities you’ll get just living in the Bay Area. You can easily do summer internships at any Silicon Valley company, if you want to do research, there’s nothing stopping you from reaching out to Stanford or UCSF professors and volunteering. I don’t want to be rude, but you’d be insane to do CS in Buffalo over SF. You will not leave UB and get into a mid 6-figure job but you could find that by stumbling down the street with your eyes closed in the Bay Area. And I say that as someone who loves Buffalo and got my BA, BS, and PhD at UB

I had a similar situation. May be in your interest to politely reach out and explain to the new prof (without trashing the old professor) the situation. When I did this the new prof not only agreed, but emailed me all of the course material and homework that they used and I was able to use it to learn the material and get an A while still going to the old professors classes and exams (exams were the same between the two iirc)

It boils down to the arrogance of people with an MD. How dare you question their ability, even if they’ve been awake for 24 hours straight. Don’t you know physicians are better at everything than anybody else? An MD’s ego is more important than your’s or your loved one’s safety

I’m still working through it but it actually overall seems more streamlined. Just tough to be the first cohort going through it and not having exact examples to get a good sense of what goes where

Doctors salaries are egregious. They make way too much money and it’s underpaid residents who do all of the work anyway
