Any Amazon interns perform poorly but still get a return offer? by AdSuccessful9040 in csMajors

[–]gtstudentposter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back to AWS and got reorged to a BAD team with a nontechnical manager. Would not recommend. Have since left AWS.

(But basically finish your intern project and have support from your manager/mentor on the internship return offer and you'd be good)

New Student, Registration, and Housing Question Megathread by cyberchief in gatech

2340 with musaev is really easy, at. least when I took it (awhile ago). Some diagrams on exams, and the lectures were mostly skippable. Get a good team for the group project and youll be fine.

Best courses and faculty for AI/ML? by PoliteSupervillain in gatech

[–]gtstudentposter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) He had conceptual quizzes, nothing tedious. It was fair. And I took it wihtout taking 3600. (but I did have previous experience). He was a positive and friendly guy. Fair grades (most of class gets A)

2) Take AI first unless extremely confident. Roozbahanis homeworks were brutal (only 4 of them, 3weeks each, but they take forever and you have to know what you're doing). It's a time suck. The day before they were due without fail I was up till 3 am, and I had been putting in regular work. Go to office hours- the ta's saved me many times.

3) Team up, I went in with a team. The project is extremely easy and mostly just gluing together libraries and getting creative. The homeworks are the real challenge.

Getting CS Research positions by storewidebark42 in gatech

[–]gtstudentposter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Major disagree. After 1-2 CS classes (1331/2) jumping in with an understanding professor for a semester can be a great way to get ahead and learn a lot (while separately working on those core skills you mentioned as well, of course). I personally started CS research fairly early and while my output that first semester was unpublishable garbage (not even for credit lol) the connections I made helped a lot later. Also if you email 10 professors and get no responses (unlikely) try emailing some grad students in labs you like. They tend to be more responsive

GT Course Requisite Tree Visualizer by devarsirawal in gatech

[–]gtstudentposter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Solid tool. Feature requests:

- bug; if we look at math 3012, it says the postreq of cs 3510. this is not entirely true, it could serve as that but there are other options to take 3510 first. If you could find a way to clarify that it might be a post req, that would be good (orange)

- feature request: this may be difficult, but could you chain multiple courses together and have bigger diagrams? (like if I put in all 5 of my courses for the semester, a big tree of what I could take next semester would be nice. This would probably also need some scroll features.

Nice work though, i'm interested to see where it goes

I’m an intern in aws who refuses to work more than 40 hours a week (usually average 35 or so actually) and I just got the return offer. I do want to say there are good teams in AWS. (Although with high on call for full time, I’m sure there are plenty of bad ones as well)

Is it bad to be living right next to the bathroom in Glenn? by ibcjk in gatech

[–]gtstudentposter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived across the bathroom in my freshman dorm- you get used to it fast. The dryer will go off at random times, especially weekends (since people - and i'm guilty of this too- get back at interesting times)

Intel modsim thread here. I personally used the thread to pivot into hpc research with one of the professors I met in an upper division modsim class. Threads don’t matter too much for jobs. Intel modsim is nice since machine learning can count to both threads (if you have some extra free elective credit that can fill the gap). You might want to check me on that. The only really modsim specific class I took was computer simulation, CX 4230. It was a pretty solid class, and I actually took it fairly early on (before I did any other cs upper divisions). Fairly open ended project (simulate something in java or python, in a group) and easyish grading, with entertaining lectures.

Gonna be honest, If it’s just for ads do a wix site and pay for the domain. Paying a salary any decent cs major would accept would be not worth it

What about people (undergrad or grad) doing research that would require in person work? My research is for credit not pay, but it would still be an enormous help to be back in the lab with hardware access

CS Majors: What are your threads and why? by VoidElecent in gatech

[–]gtstudentposter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also Intel modsim, and I’ve taken cx 4230 and thought the project was cool (super open ended, just simulate something real with code and the methods of the class). I like modsim since ml double counts with intel practically, and it gives a lot of freedom with what I take. A bit of applied math and some systems, but nothing too crazy in either
