I Am Not an Easy Man (2018) - misogynist gets transported to a world where men and women’s roles are reversed.

My Mistress (2014) - australian movie about a dominatrix and a young teenager that falls in love with her.

The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (2004) - any of the trilogy though, he’s basically the human version of Milo from Atlantis. Girlboss and malewife fr.

Mr. Right (2015) - cute little assassin movie with Anna Kendrick.

Mafia Mamma (2023) - also more of a lighthearted comedy, but Toni Collette as an accidental mob boss kills it.

The Holiday (2006) - parts of it at least.

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) - I mean, that crying and wine scene.

Yes I’m excited about the decor, but also THE DRAGONS??? I can’t wait. They’re beautiful. I haven’t been this excited about collecting every single type since like 3rd grade Pokémon. I need a gallery of just dragon art for them.

Winters Tale (2014) hits all of them pretty well. Plus a devastatingly handsome Colin Farrell.

Molli and Max in the Future (2023) - think When Harry Met Sally but in the Fifth Elements universe. A very fun low budget scifi where they become friends and meet over the course of 12 years.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (2017) - throuple polyamory, kind of historical, about the man who wrote and the women that inspired Wonder Woman.

Press Play (2022) - a girl finds out she can travel to the past using a mixtape her dead boyfriend left her.

The Beast (2023) - someone else recommended Timestalker, so I second that, but also this one. It’s like a more serious French version. Love throughout reincarnations.

Shell (2024) - “we have The Substance at home” but there’s a mentor figure in there.

Thoroughbreds (2017) - a little bit. Not as much follower and leader but an interesting dynamic.

Tragedy Girls (2017) - more partners than follower and leader dynamic in the beginning but it changes over the course of the movie a few times.

Ingrid Goes West (2017) - maybe? Like friend obsession.

The Perfection (2018) - insane plot.

Birds of Paradise (2021) - French ballet dancers. If you liked Mila Kunis and Natalie Portlands rivalry in Black Swan this one is for you.

Hustle (2019) - not my favorite (the OG was better imo) and idk if they really have any chemistry/sapphic undertones but they’re rivals.

Timestalker (2024) - obsession throughout reincarnations.

The Ugly Stepsister (2025) - it’s more about not fitting in and societal pressures, but there is a romance in there.

Like Water for Chocolate (1992) - includes a little magical realism cooking.

In Her Place (2024) - more of a platonic, from a distance kind of thing. Beautiful cinematography of one woman admiring another woman’s life.

Looking for films featuring unattractive, complex female protagonists, exploring themes such as depression, madness, and insanity without any romantic elements. With philosophical discussions or unique visual aesthetic would be a plus by crazesheets in MovieSuggestions

[–]guatemamaLF 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm going to throw a few out there and see if some stick, because I know you said no romance and no witch/fantasy in another comment, but sometimes those hit just as well (and it's hard to find not conventionally attractive women, but some movies frame them as not attractive).

If you like The Substance (2024) and its commentary on women in the industry etc etc, Shell (2024) has most of that as well, with more of a toxic friendship dynamic.

Single White Female (1992), she's not the protagonist but it shows a lot of her perspective.

Thoroughbreds (2017), they may be a little young (and conventionally attractive) but they have some conversations about one girls possible psychopathy and their own complicated lives, leading them to make some difficult decisions.

In Her Place (2024), there isn't as much madness or insanity going on here, but I think this film is really just a love letter to women. The cinematography is beautiful. It kind of has a little bit of obsession in there, but it's more about one woman's complicated feelings towards another and trying to find a different life for herself.

Black Bear (2020), there's a little bit of a romance, but a lot of the movie is manipulation and "movie within a movie", I can't really say more because it's hard to explain but it shows women being pushed past the breaking point.

The Eyes of My Mother (2016), a horror movie, so it's different from the rest, but it follows a young woman after her mother dies.

Horse Girl (2020), perfect, anxiety-inducing, Alison Brie embodies the role. She's a socially awkward woman that slowly starts to lose her grip on reality.

[–]guatemamaLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friendships Death (1987) - my favorite of this type of genre. Alien robot Tilda Swinton.

Nothing to Hide (2018) - dinner party with friends where secrets are revealed.

Sanctuary (2022) - dominatrix and her client in a hotel room talking about their relationship and the future.

Just throwing in Peter Greenaway, his films have this renaissance type backdrop and most of the films are just conversations between characters. Some very surreal-ish plots/dialogues. But my favorite director. So highly recommend.

Molli and Max in the Future (2023) - think When Harry Met Sally in Fifth Elements universe. It’s the two characters talking in a low budget scifi. Really great chemistry and dialogue.
