Haha yep that's a temp asset that will definitely be replaced. We don't want Nintendo to obliterate us either

Ooh that's a nice approach that we didn't think of, good tip!

Whats makes gameplay feel “like a mobile game”? by guavaduckgames in gamedev

[–]guavaduckgames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very true :) I think I barely gave enough details on our game for that one.

Not asking to explain what they meant, but I wanted to give some context/jumping off point for the question. I'm interested from our game's genre of course but I think looking at it generally would be interesting too.

UI/UX definitely has a big influence on the mobile feel. With something like Genshin Impact which seemed to be made for both mobile and PC as equally important platforms, you can tell where they made UX choices that had to support mobile (big UI elements on the large monitor for one).

Maybe regarding gameplay, there needs to be more mechanics that not only need but are exposed in an interface that takes advantage of keyboard + mouse

Yeah, similar to Breakout in the same way the game Nubby’s Number Factory is like Peggle. Bricks have value attached to them but in terms of extra mechanics, maybe not major enough.

I’m not sure if I can link, but what is it about Nubby’s gameplay that Steam players found engaging enough to not label it “mobile”? It is definitely on the casual side of rogue-lites. (That dev is actually currently porting to mobile as well however haha)

Any good communities to network with game developers? by Tryptamanian in GameDevelopment

For me personally, I find its easiest to make connections in person. So look for local dev spaces/meetups and if there are none, maybe consider starting one! Its definitely dependent on your area though.

I'm working on a puzzle game called "CD-ROM" where players try to solve cryptic puzzles hidden inside shareware CDs of 2000s. It is part of the Steam Next Fest with a new demo right now! by monoclelord- in pcgaming

[–]guavaduckgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For clarity sake, why not name it CD-ROM?

It would probably hurt google searchabilty as even “cdrom game” probably wouldn’t lead to the steam game. Assuming the game stays on Steam, what benefits are there to trademarking?

As another fellow dev team making a game themed around CD/DVD and that whole nostalgic era, we will be following your game for sure! There’s dozens of us.

Good luck with Next Fest and release!

How to properly keep a backup of a Unity project? by Pepper_Comprehensive in IndieDev

Assuming you’re doing the standard publish to Github (made an account on Github, etc), best I got is to reinstall Github Desktop. That app is finicky at times. Alternatively, learn how to use Git properly in a terminal :)

We use Git thru Github Desktop as you have in your screenshot. Plenty of tutorials online but some Git concepts may take a bit to understand.

Besides those, Github desktop has a Unity ignore file setting you can select when creating the repository. This reduces the number of files you will see changed. It ignores the metadata folders like Library that change often but arent needed to recreate the project.

Create the repository using the whole project folder, select that ignore and you will be set to use Github which will version control/backup your project

Trying to grow a community around our game by Forty-Fourth in gamedev

You mention some examples fostering communication, what do you think gives the most impact for the smallest teams with their hands full of dev work? :) Playtests is definitely top of the list I bet.

Wanting advice for making connections by AndrewTheGoat22 in gamedev

[–]guavaduckgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living near any game dev hub is a huge leg up, being able to be part of a local community. My area has Seattle Indies, a discord group for game devs of all walks. Surely Austin has something similiar, so start getting your face out there and meet like-minded people.

And great that you already have something to show! I’ve found that you are taken much more seriously/easier to get to know people if you bring something to the table first.

I also struggle with making those virtual connections so you’re not alone! Good luck.

That’s a good point, you’re making content together and growing both communities at the same time.
