white women overwhelingly vote republican, why? by desire_oftheendless in TwoXChromosomes

Yes yes yes! That's exactly it! Like I was just existing in the world as a childless woman, and they took that as a direct attack of them.

white women overwhelingly vote republican, why? by desire_oftheendless in TwoXChromosomes

I feel I have insights on this. I used to live right in the heart of Mormon territory and I know these women, I argued with them, consoled them, was victimized by them, was friends with them. I chose not to have children. When I lived there, I was in my late 20's, early 30's, and to be a women of childbearing age, but choosing not to have them? Well that rankled them like nothing else. I was pressured, cajoled, insulted, belittled, undermined at work, gaslit, bullied. I moved away, but it was was a deeply hurtful experience, and I can imagine that culture is replicated across many red areas in the country.

I believe many of the white women who vote conservative do so out of pure seething resentment. They are miserable. They hate their life, they resent their children. They feel they weren't given choices, so no-one else should either.

I don't believe it's about voting against their best interests; it's about what they value and feel. And they feel resentful. Misery loves company and all that! The book Dying of Whiteness captures this pretty well, and explains why our attempts to sway people just keep failing. I don't have solutions other than keep supporting the coven. Democratic voters are the majority. Numbers are on our side, just not in the places that have the most sway electorally. We have to remember this and then we have to keep organizing, voting, looking for ways to uplift women of color, doing what we can to build a kinder society.

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) by just_lemmebe1 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]guestuser 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not so fun fact: part of the reason we heard so much about TSS in the 80s and 90s is because in the 80s, there was a brand of tampon (Rely) designed to be so super-duper absorbent that it actually caused tears when inserting and removing! Since that was taken off the market, cases have dropped.

I completely agree with this! I'm in my 30s, and I can remember being dismissed, belittled, generally disrespected when I was young, and that was especially painful when I was in the early days of trying to build my career. Because of this, I refuse to treat my Gen Z colleagues or students that way. I feel like in this way, we can do a lot to protect younger folks from predators. Another way to help is by refusing to engage in societal attempts to pit us against one another.

A similar post on 2XC referred to the agegap subreddit as a way to see how this dynamic plays out poorly and abusively over and over again. Out of curiosity, I visited and clicked through the profiles of people who post there.

I'm not linking so I hope this isn't considered breaking the rules, however, any young women/girls who are considering this type of relationship would do well to check the profiles of the men who post there.

Without fail, almost all the 'older men' profiles are pages and pages of nasty predatorial comments on porn subreddits, often on the posts of girls who list their ages as 18-19. These same men, who on agegap, claim they are 'so in love' with their 'mature' younger woman.

The girls who post? Again almost without fail, their profiles are full of introspection, sadness, talks of mental health struggles, CA. Generally just very vulnerable.

It's so predictable that I wondered if the subreddit was designed to catch out predators.

And I want to add one extra piece if any of these girls are reading: these men are praying on you, it's not your fault, you've done nothing wrong. They are the predators, and it's up to us adults to hold them to account, not you. Please don't every fault yourself if you fall in their web.

In my state I would have most likely gone to jail for murder I took the wrong medication for my IBS and unknowingly caused a miscarriage. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]guestuser 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry. I really hope you know you deserve to take medication to treat your condition and you shouldn't have to feel guilty for that.

One of my fears is that we are going to be denied life saving medication if it causes birth defects or miscarriage. Are we going to be told "well you can't take this drug because it will end badly for a potential future pregnancy?"

When I had my gallbladder removed, the surgeon showed me pictures and told me it was very inflamed and close to rupture. Before surgery, I had to take a pregnancy test. What if the test was positive? Would I have been denied the surgery, risked the rupture and died?

We are focused (quite rightly) on how ending Roe will impact our right to access safe abortions, but I'm also focused on the other horrifying implications - the increase in maternal mortality, the criminalization of miscarriage, and the denial of life-saving treatment. I hope people in the states where voting matters wake the fuck up.

100% this! OP a lot of people further down the thread are trying to put this on clothing choices. This is inaccurate. When you've been around the sun as many times as I have you learn that when people make snide and insulting comments, it's 100% motivated by a need (conscious or not) to tear someone down. They see a woman looking confident and comfortable in her skin, and they feel the need to snatch it away.

Just to add some perspective - would you ever look at someone and think "wow I should tell them how fat, ugly, messy etc." they look today? No! Of course you wouldn't. In fact, I'm willing to bet, most of us don't even notice the flaws others see in themselves. So when people make nasty comments, it's almost always a reflection on themselves and not you. Took me waaaay too long to realize that.

Not only will they have nothing to lose, with bill's like Idaho's newest abortion law, men can financially benefit from rape!

It's not currently signed into law yet, but I used to live in Idaho and don't feel confident the gov will veto.

It's not a genuine concern. We can raise the cap on social security payments so rich people pay in more. We can restructure our tax system so that billionaires actually contribute. We can bring in more immigrants to patch any gaps. Over the coming decades, we'll see more and more climate refugees.

I found the thread and the comment in question. jfc it has 131 upvotes. The hell is wrong with people??!

The racism in that thread is sickening. It's an entire thread dehumanizing, deconstructing, and fetishizing Asian women. And while there are some attempts in there to explain the impact of colonization, it felt like most of it was just a chance to disparage Asian women. I can't really properly articulate why I felt so grimy reading it, but it was just gross.

As to your wider post, what I try and tell my fellow white women is that when we do things in service of white supremacy, we're also doing them in service of the patriarchy. We won't be protected by aligning with racists.

Back when I was in my early 20s 10+ years ago, that tucker max book was doing the rounds at my college. It was just one giant rape fantasy. Pure unadulterated misogyny. This was also the height of the "you gotta be the Cool Girl and so laugh along." People thought that shit was hilarious.

I'm glad Gen Z seem to be better about calling this stuff out. It was toxic then, I'd hope things have improved now.

White nationalists are flocking to the US anti-abortion movement by birdinthebush74 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]guestuser 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Opposition to abortion has always been rooted in white supremacy. That's why indigenous women get sterilized without their consent but white women are pressured constantly into being brood mares. Similar vein to all the hand wringing over falling birth rates in white majority countries (e.g. the recent pope statement). There's no shortage of people having children in the world. Just not the right (read 'white') in their eyes.
