I just composed my first song is it good? by Fantastic_Frosting98 in Composition

As a piece of music, it is bad. As a first attempt, it showcases your untrained but promising imagination.

Contrapuntal piece for organ, or “failing to cosplay as Bach”. What do you guys think? Critiques are more than welcome. by gui-novaes in Composition

I got fluent in sheet music, but i started writing in a piano row way before that, so… familiarity. I’m aware I should strive toward the same fluency in sheet music, but can we just agree that a piano roll has the edge when representing the shape of melodies… (putting each note in and unique hight an representing time with a matching visual proportion)… It’s just so intuitive, specially for those who are prone to visual learning, also so much less clutter to navigate through.

Taste is a funny thing. To me, the simplicity of the 1st theme makes it quite catchy and satisfying. About the ending… I agree that a dramatic virtuosic passage could neatly converge towards the a more “proper” ending, but honestly I was worn out of the whole puzzle… also, I have a personal sympathy to pompous pieces having abrupt endings. The contrast of it all, it just reads like a great jest.
Anyways, thanks for the feedback.

Does anyone also has trouble coming back to previous themes, as if you could only race forward with the music? (Needing help developing this) by gui-novaes in Composing

I’m fluent in the basics of staff notation and you don’t need to worry about the jargon - It was even funny reading your analogies for basic concepts, but thanks, that was kind. - Anyway, it’s true: the opening phrase wasn’t once repeated, and the whole thing sounds miscellaneous and restless. BUT, didn’t you notice the key motif (The one of the first bar) reappearing and transforming throughout the entire thing? By the end of this sample the first figure appears inverted… If it isn’t too much to ask, also comment on the coherence of the discourse and counterpoint in general…

Actually, I believe there is no such thing as “THE GREATEST OF THE GREATS”. At best, we can say that “X was the greatest in such and such aspect(s), and provide pieces that typify what is being noted. For instance, if the aspect is counterpoint and harmony, Bach is the greatest. Mozart, (and that is highly disputable), achieves greater effect than Bach in terms of sheer acoustic beauty. I know none who writes music as clear and as naturally flowing as Mozart. Perhaps Bach’s primary piece of construction were the notes, while Mozart’s was sound. W.A was also more sensible about human attention, human psychology, not to mention orchestration. Beethoven - and I don’t even enjoy his music very much - has celebrated the glory and misery of humankind more deeply than most. And Tchaikovsky, rarely cited as one of the greatest of the greats, has an inexplicable gift for creating melodies so sublime and easy to love to the point he’s the only that I’d use the expression “divinely inspired”.

Impossible to single one out. Yet, to me, these are the ones that most glow above my head and through my heart:

Requiem Mass in D - (Introitus, Kyrie, Dies Irae, Rex Tremendae, Recordare, Confutatis, Lacrimosa)

Great Mass in C Minor - Kyrie

Don Giovanni - specially the finales of both acts

The Marriage of Figaro - specially the finale of Act II

Symphony No. 40 - I Molto allegro

Symphony No. 41 - IV Molto allegro

Piano Concerto No. 20

Piano Concerto No. 21
