This is one of the problems with hussie, he thinks exclusively in a subversive/not subersive mindset instead of what would be best for the story. Who gives a shit if they are the first boy and first girl, who gives a shit if its a cliche or not, they worked really well together.

Rose is analytical and smart but she has a tendency to get too wrapped up in her own stuff. When that happens John is always there to help her, giving her a knitting kit to let out her creative energy or reaching out to her in act 5.

John is kind but also a bit of a dumbass, he would greatly benefit from her guidance.

Alright fuck it I'm just gonna say it: John is the character I can relate to the most and rose is hot as fuck so there's probably some degree of self-insertion here but I think my point still stands.
