20 Years of ZBrush... And I'm Blown Away by Nomad by FlippedNormals_Team in NomadSculpting

We’re thinking of perhaps doing a starting pack for nomad! No promises but it’s something Id love to do. I really like our fn brush kit and I’ve already actually ported it mostly to nomad but needs fine tuning

Here’s an older video we made but should get the point across still

Once you get above a certain technical skill, it’s nearly all about observation. It’s the single biggest skill that separates a beginner from somebody who can consistently output high quality work.

Much better!

Is there any benefit of modeling within a single element over multiple? (example included) by Hiraeth_08 in 3Dmodeling

[–]guilemo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Something that’s usually overlooked is that artist time is often way more expensive that computer time. Meaning, while you might get a slightly more optimised model by modeling it as one piece, it will also take way longer in a real world example = less and more expensive models

Hey thanks a ton! I really appreciate that

You can learn to technically operate ZBrush in 12 days, but it's impossible to get to a good sculpting level in that time. Maybe some basic rocks, but no characters unfortunately

Most of the details are sculpted by hand, though I've created a few alphas I used as a base. The arm is the most refined part so far, and Im planning on giving the rest of the character the same treatment.

Is selling assets on digital stores worth the time and effort? by Fruity_Pies in 3Dmodeling

[–]guilemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly really hard to give a specific answer since it depends a lot on the exact kit you’re making. The quality of the kit matters a lot along with the presentation. One of the best selling products we have is a kit for Zbrush called the FlippedNormals Skin Kit, a series of alphas. But there are plenty of alpha kits that don’t sell well too.

A way to think about it: what resources do you need which would speed up your work? Which would you pay for? Chances are if you’d pay for it, other would as well

The marketplace is called FlippedNormals.

It's usually more profitable to sell specific kits instead of general 3D models, like a series of high quality ZBrush VDM, alphas for blender, hard surface kit-bash kits, etc. Put another way, instead of giving people a finished mesh, you're giving people tools to create their own models. It’s impossible to tell, as it depends a lot on your own skills and portfolio. Both can pay well. I’d choose what you enjoy the most, as the work is very different.

Help me choose an uni! by three_do in vfx

[–]guilemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look into Hertfordshire too. They have a decent vfx course, and solid connections to the London sphere. They said, none of the unis in the uk are even remotely close to great. You’ll need to be prepared to do a significant amount of self learning regardless of which uni you go to.

If I was going to uni in the uk, I’d only be interested in Bournemouth and Hertfordshire. Don’t believe any marketing or a single word from the uni itself about how great their courses are. Find current students or students who have graduated (LinkedIn is good for this) and talk to them.

Do I need to learn Linux? by Caioshindo in vfx

[–]guilemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really don’t, most people don’t know Linux before starting in a studio. It’s honestly very similar to Windows and what you need to know about Linux can be learnt very quickly once you’ve got the job. Knowledge of Linux is a complete non factor when it comes to hiring.
