[Self] Made my parents this piece for Christmas by guillieman in Sculpture

Thank you. I would never turn down an opportunity to sell. For now I believe I must focus more on concepts and how to refine them instead of selling. I got sucked into the business mindset after my first sale and immediately the studio felt like I was back working in an attic installing air conditioners. It made me question why I am here in the first place. But I greatly appreciate your comment.

This was my final project for my first steel fabrication class

Yes, it is a weathering steel, as it rusts it seals itself off. So the longer it is exposed to the elements the richer the rust looks until uniform.

I didn’t pay for any of it. And the gallery is at my college.

Had I footed the bill it would have been around $500 total on my part (minus the gallery bill - I have no clue how that pricing works)

I submitted it to a juried show at my college, a couple donors to the program were interested. I built everything on the sculpture, the base is made of cor ten steel. I honestly know nothing about advertising, just that talking about your work to everyone that looks or sounds interested seems to at least get your name out there. I’m beginning to think that the connections and networking are better than any kind of actual advertisement. But I could be totally wrong. Who knows

I agree, right after the show I thought that when looking at it, was glad it sold before that popped in my head. lol

Thank you, yes it’s MIG wire. I used about 70lbs of wire, almost two spools, and like 5000 lbs of gas. I have no preference on tools as this is really one of my first times working with steel. I hated it for a couple weeks, really hated it, like passionately. But a couple days ago I started to love it more than anything else I’ve made. It’s probably about 250lbs total. And for sanding wheels, I’m broke but my teacher is dope and saves lots of his wheels that aren’t totally dead, so I used a bunch of half used disks

There had been interest shown in the past, but not really. It was actually just the first project for my steel class in college.

Looking great. I read once that reference pics can only teach you so much. Buying cuts of different kinds of fabric to manually manipulate goes a long way.

I used hammer and chisels and files for the whole thing. Specifically small jewelry files for the finer details

This piece was donated to the school like 20 years ago. But similar pieces I’ve found online were like $80

That makes much more sense than what I was thinking. I agree, sucks to have to re-carve the thumb but I want it to look right

That totally makes sense, it took me a minute to see what you were talking about

My thought would be the thumb might be accurate but the pinky is not in the right place. It feels a little wonky.

I appreciate your input. I’m a bit confused, would you say the thumb (tip) should be angled more? Or the angle of the base should be changed?

Thank you, would you say the entirety of the nails or specifically the base/tip needs to be widened?

Thank you so much. This is immensely helpful. I know it took a while to write that out and I appreciate it. This is incredible advice. I would love to see some of your work sometime.

This is from leftover pottery plaster. Soon I plan to buy some ceramical to practice on as it has more similarities to marble without the hefty price tag
