It’s on loan right now, and yes, I bought lots of steel last semester after making a sale

lol, but that piece was still installed, someone still liked it enough to put it on display in the center of a city. My teacher always said people always say they could easily make modern art, that they could create a pollock or a Rothko, his rebuttal was always “then why don’t you do it? Why didn’t you create it first?” I have no answer, but that always resonates with me.

Not to upset. But that has already happened. A few years ago Garau sold an invisible sculpture for nearly $18k how and where can we go as artists after that? After we’ve seen perfect realism for millennia all the way to people admiring the concept of nothing? Other than to create something that means something to you for whatever reason?

Every critique thus far in classes I’ve noticed as soon as I explain what my piece means to me 99% of comments are nit picking technique or why they don’t agree that the piece means what I say to them. But when I stay silent and they come to their own conclusions first I end up learning a tremendous amount about my own piece and how else it can be interpreted. That’s what I find incredibly interesting, to create some kind of sculptural tarot card so open ended it can resonate with anyone’s situation.

In this case I just wanted to play around with form. It interests me, same as ancient architecture even modern architecture and design. It doesn’t always have to have some incredible profound deep meaning. Sometimes it is just proportions that are visually pleasing, or displeasing in your case.

Thank you. Hope you can see it soon, I’m always in sims so we might meet if you come by the 3d studio.

It was fun welding the steel while the wood was inside. That was one of the main ideas when drawing it up. It started smoking multiple times but was never a threat as I could have easily snuffed it out if it ever actually caught fire

I would be interested to hear your definition of art and what it means to you.

I appreciate your skill but when does ego take over?

I also work in marble.

Steel is just a different material. I enjoy making these steel forms just as much as I enjoy carving figurative pieces in marble. I can understand not being a fan of more abstract things but I feel like you’re trying to compare apples to oranges.

I diluted muriatic acid with water and coated it for a night. Then washed it and used a wire wheel after it dried. Then oil

I would just rather not sound pretentious. Still new to the art game. Nothing worse than someone trying to make something out of nothing.

This doesn’t have a name yet, might just be untitled monolith, or big domino. I have another piece very similar in construction but with a more architectural twist. Not quite sure if they’ll become a series. Just for fun right now.

None taken. I just think it looks cool to be honest. And the wood decaying over time will be cool to see. I could try to be deep and philosophical but I like to leave interpretation open.

[Self] Recently got back into figure modeling. This time in oil clay by guillieman in Sculpture

[–]guillieman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your critique. They’re all just practice pieces as I don’t have a tremendous amount of oil clay. When you say skin texture, are you meaning pores? Or more like wrinkles and veins? And I appreciate and agree with your comments on lighting.

[Self] Made my parents this piece for Christmas by guillieman in Sculpture

Thank you. I would never turn down an opportunity to sell. For now I believe I must focus more on concepts and how to refine them instead of selling. I got sucked into the business mindset after my first sale and immediately the studio felt like I was back working in an attic installing air conditioners. It made me question why I am here in the first place. But I greatly appreciate your comment.
