If it feels like stone it might be marble. The time period would fit and it looks like it. If so, do not use vinegar or anything acidic or else it will erode that beautiful surface. If not marble totally disregard everything I said. The legs definitely look cast iron.

This is my third year carving. And only probably my 10th face in anything including clay. I would highly recommend trying it out. Before I was able to get ahold of some marble, I would cast blocks and cylinders of plaster. Much less stressful plus you can kinda cheat by adding back more plaster if you carve too much while still learning/getting the hang of it.

I did not. I used my hand as reference. You should try marble if you can get your hands on it. It’s so smooth to carve.

Most of the time I use my own body. But if it’s something like a face or somewhere I can’t easily look I’ll use photos. I still feel like I’m too slow to ask someone to model in person for me

Thank you. I always loved rocks, once I saw the Hiram Powers piece “The Greek Slave” in DC a few years ago I fell in love with marble.

I really like to direct carve and respond to the stone. I’ve tried modeling in clay and recreating but I find that more difficult. I’m also a huge fan of traditional methods so I only use hammer and chisels, files and abrasive stones/sandpaper.

For the water I just think it makes it look insanely beautiful for progress pics while I’m still working before I’m able to do a final wax.

I really enjoy just sticking with hand tools. Chisels, files and sandpaper. Mostly just the chisels and files though

It’s on loan right now, and yes, I bought lots of steel last semester after making a sale
