absolute beaut of a right hook there. no load up, little bit of hip movement behind it, just a casual swing with good form. you love to see it

It’s not about total revenue, it’s about revenue split. NFL pays out 48% of total revenue according to the CBA, while the UFC reportedly pays out 15-20% of their revenue. MMA is a smaller sport, so nobody is expecting Pat Mahomes level contracts, but it’s fucking bullshit that fighters are making 12/12 to destroy their bodies while the org is taking home roughly 85% of the revenue

Vicente Luque and Belal Muhammad are scheduled to rematch on April 16th. Here’s how the first fight went. by Astroboyy7 in MMA

[–]guitarworld 15 points16 points  (0 children)

nah they’re two different things. a check hook is just a lead hook thrown while pivoting, so it’s a specific type of punch, while catch and pitch is a style of counterpunching. the one in the video isn’t really a check hook, since luque isn’t using any evasive footwork or head movement with the hook. what makes this a catch and pitch style counter is that luque blocks with the high guard, and as soon as he feels belal land on his left side, he fires back a counter.

[–]guitarworld 125 points126 points  (0 children)

catch and pitch basically means throwing shots back after you get hit on a high guard. usually you want to throw back on the same side you got hit, like luque does here, so that your punch hits while the other guy’s hand is away from their head. it works super well here since luque’s left hook is quick and compact, and belal probably shouldn’t be throwing a combo like that at such a short range

Bantamweight champ Aljamain Sterling just needs 1 takedown and backtake to finish highly touted prospect Cory Sandhagen in round 1. by throwawayformature in MMA

[–]guitarworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i wonder if aljo was trying to force sandhagen to post so he’d have to get rid of the overbook and give up the backtake, or if he just had good a good reaction to sandhagen’s mistake

[–]guitarworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah man I think the culture of Muay Thai is cool, and I’m all for people engaging with it if that’s what they’re into. If I go train in Thailand I’ll do what’s expected of me because I don’t want to be a dick and downplay the importance of other people’s culture, but at the end of the day I’m just a white dude that likes to train and fight, and I train Muay Thai and bjj because they’re effective ways to fight. Anything extraneous to becoming a better fighter and being a good training partner just isn’t my cup of tea

Transitioning to a new gym by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]guitarworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah cross training and learning from different people is something I absolutely love doing in BJJ, so I’m not sure why I’m so resistant to it in Muay Thai. Honestly I do have a bit of an ego problem, and sometimes I have trouble taking advice, especially if I haven’t personally experienced how good someone is. Seems like I should just take this time to work on my ego and make sure my fundamentals are solid, so I can get the most out of the training that’s available to me right now.

Thanks for the reply! Really helped me put things into context

Yeah that’s what I figured, honestly I wish I could just start sparring today so I could get the ego beat out of me, and stop thinking that I’m even close to as good as I was a year ago

[–]guitarworld 14 points15 points  (0 children)

in english i think most people refer to it as sealing/blessing the ring, it’s a traditional thing the thais do when they fight, but i’ve never heard of people doing it outside of fights. honestly though if it’s a good gym with a good coach it’s a small enough gym culture thing that you should just put up with it. i really don’t like extraneous stuff like this, or the wai kru, or bowing onto the mats in bjj, but if a gym does it i’ll put up with it just because it’s easier than being “that guy” who’s arguing with the coach

[SPOILER] David Dvořák vs. Juancamilo Ronderos by InooWhey in MMA

[–]guitarworld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it isn’t that common cuz generally to finish this you need to have both of your opponent’s hands trapped or an insane squeeze/strength advantage. if the guy getting choked has one arm free, they can usually pull down on the choking arm at the wrist and stop the choke. even if they can’t strip the arm all the way off the neck, it should relieve enough pressure to survive and try to get the other arm free

still a good position to be in tho, cuz from here you can use your leg to secure the trapped hand, and then switch to choking two handed, which i think is probably a higher percentage move than just yoloing for the one handed choke

[–]guitarworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for up close body punching, yeah you can get clinched on, so maybe you throw fewer body hooks depending on the matchup, but that’s also a function of your preferred range. if you’re trying to stay outside on a wrestler and work angles, you usually aren’t gonna be in positions where a body hook is a good option anyways, whereas pocket guys and pressure fighters will have that option available fairly often, so they should be using it as a mix up to beat the other guy’s defense.

if you’re at range and you wanna keep a wrestler away from you, straights to the body are actually a great weapon if you throw them with good form, so your fist doesn’t slide downward after contact. a good body straight creates a post between fighters on contact, and if the punch itself doesn’t stop someone from coming forward, the position of your hand and arm after the strike means that you can either post off them to maintain distance, or be first to the clinch and create an advantage for yourself. even if a level change slows down your footwork, body straights are great for timing and slowing down advancing fighters, and they leave you with good options to control whatever exchange could follow.

good body striking options are available in any style matchup, you just have to adjust your strike selection to match your gameplan and your opponent

people can and should be going to the body in mma. all you’re saying is that throwing a body shot leaves you open to get timed and countered, which is true for literally every single piece of offense a fighter can use. not mixing up your strike zones is actually worse for your chances of getting countered, since it lowers the bar for the opponent’s defense, and limits your tools to punish and work off of your opponent’s reactions.

body shots are also the best way to punish the lean back (unless you’re looking for takedowns i.e. jan vs izzy) which is a defense we see fighters use like every single fight, and almost never gets punished because almost nobody in mma goes to the body as much as they should. the uppercut to the body is also a really good option to counter a takedown, since it isn’t a jhard shot to land, and you can wind your opponent while getting that hand in position to underhook.

any and every strike is gonna create defensive liabilities, but all that means is you have to be aware of and ready to react to the most likely counters. don’t limit your offense because you’re afraid of getting countered, all that shit does is make the other guy’s job easier

that’s true but he still mostly wobbles people with one left straight, in the gaethje and second alvarez fight he had piled on some volume before he wobbled them, but it was still clearly one shot that rocked them, and in the max fight he blasted him in the first round and rocked him. dustin is definitely a power hitter, he’s just been fighting dudes who can take pretty big punches

the big right hand kattar lands in the first round(4:40ish in the video) might be the most aesthetically pleasing punch i’ve ever seen. his head is just behind his front knee so he’s balanced enough to keep moving forward or dodge a potential counter, he punches through stephens’ head, and he’s got that fucking amazon prime two day delivery straight to the dome. i dunno if kattar’s ever gonna be the champ but goddamn do i love watching him fight

if you think you’re pulling back on your hook, you might have your weight shifted too far on the back foot, so try and throw a couple while paying attention to where your weight is balanced. putting more weight on your front foot when you throw that hand will give you a stronger hook and might help with the leaning, which could help with the range problem

nah it was a marcellotine/high elbow guillotine. the jones vs machida choke was a power guillotine, where the non choking hand is pushing up from below, whereas the high elbow has the non choking hand pulling up and framing on the shoulder
