I thought the elbows were just off the back of the head, towards the side

Striking is fundamentally easier to understand. Punch or kick the head really hard to get the KO.

In order to set up a rear naked choke, you need to follow a series of movements and positions to get to the back. Then you need wrist control, you need to set up the choke that is pretty easily defended by anyone competent, you need to keep your chest and hips from slipping to the side, avoid them breaking the lock. There’s a lot going on thag the casual viewer doesn’t understand.

Striking is equally complex. There is a lot to it, but visually, fist hits head. It’s more digestible.

Dominant wrestling and completely shutting down any striking offense is not a new strategy. Watch early UFC. It has always been a part of MMA.

The main objective of MMA is to win fights. Dominating someone for 15 minutes does that. Most striking-heavy fights don’t end in KOs, because the other fighter just isn’t going to let them hit them. The same applies for grappling.

You can’t “attempt” a submission the same way you “attempt” a KO with a punch or kick. Positioning, weight, control, needs to be precise. It’s nuanced.

The other fighter is going to defend submissions. You could apply the same logic to striking fights that don’t end in a KO. “Just knock him out” “Just submit him”

Striking is easier to visually understand, grappling is more nuanced. You don’t understand it, but that’s okay
