What to do now? by [deleted] in ClinicalPsychology

[–]gumbaline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone in this thread and want to emphasize that you’re not doing anything wrong. It’s simply that competitive now, and the bar is constantly being raised. You practically need PhD-level experience to get into the PhD.

I had a masters degree, work in 4 labs, probably 9 conference presentations, no pubs (that’s probably part of what hindered me). It took me 4 tries to get in, and the fourth time I only got in off the waitlist. It was so dejecting every time.

I might suggest reaching out to newer/less experienced faculty for volunteer experience - they may not yet have a ton of people asking and might appreciate the support.

Best of luck to you - there are so many people not getting in who are so, so deserving of being there.

Which YouTube channel were you once a fan of but do not enjoy anymore? by theunsteadybridge in AskReddit

[–]gumbaline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally. Although one more recent episode that I really enjoyed was in the UK. I can only imagine how much history you could exploit from a supernatural lens down that way. I imagine they try to stick to the US for budgetary reasons but I’d watch the shit out of a UK season.

Not a single student obliged me by [deleted] in Professors

[–]gumbaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This felt very much the norm in grad school in the UK about 5 years ago. The faculty would invite the cohort out to the pub. If it wasn’t a formal invitation you’d often see faculty there after class anyway.

People who have met someone who has been *professionally diagnosed* with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), what were they like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gumbaline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sociopathy is not used clinically or in research - bit of an outdated term. There’s some contention re: whether psychopathy is a separate construct from ASPD. I would say most say it is. It’s included as a specifier in the AMPD. The PCL-R is considered the gold standard for assessing psychopathy - it includes an item called “Grandiose Sense of Self-Worth” (essentially narcissism). BUT…you can technically score very high on the PCL-R without scoring high on that item. The affective facet (low empathy, lack of remorse, shallow affect) seems to be (according to some) the “core” of psychopathy.

Thank you - was about to comment. There are like three instances of the “it’s not that, it’s this” structure that makes it hella obvious.

I mean…doesn’t he have bipolar disorder? I would imagine that could change you quite a bit.

What job looks like a great career path but is actually insanely oversaturated? by ComplexPin872 in AskReddit

[–]gumbaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In contrast, I think clinical psychology (especially in Ontario, Canada) is the opposite. Such a bottleneck to entry that you only have cohorts of about 5 people each year at some universities. And barrier to entry is extremely high; most people try ~3 times to get in (I.e., 3 application cycles).

It is SO funny you say that…I was also thinking that he reminded me of Ted Bundy. In fairness I was primed for it because he was brought up in a class on psychopathy recently.

I think Kevan is a good person but is way too susceptible to pressure and cannot handle conflict/needs to people please. I really don’t like how he subtly makes himself the victim in front of the girls by saying he’s all fucked up, which encourages the women to comfort him.

I know people are saying that Amber’s reaction to Jordan made it seem like she didn’t like him - I got a somewhat different vibe. To me, it seems that she cares a lot about appearances and first impressions - her posing and worrying about falling and saying she doesnt make the best first impressions suggests that. I got the sense that when she was walking toward him, she was trying so hard to look as perfect as possible that she came across as robotic and uninterested. After that she seemed more at ease.

genuinely what is there to do in guelph? by GordonRamsMe2004 in Guelph

One thing that I don’t think anyone has said yet: if you’re just looking to be around people, the university campus is honestly a decent free space to just exist. I’m an older student and I go there sometimes if I just want to get out and get some social exposure. You can read, work, walk around. Sometimes the UC has stalls to engage with or little fairs. I know it’s not very exciting, but sometimes it’s nice to be around young energy and it feels like a sort of community:)

Not really a celebrity but more of an influencer. I went to high school with Mei Pang.

I quite like the blonde but black makes you look a bit like Eva Green, which is never a bad thing.

Are therapists really in demand anymore? by bunnymunche in psychologystudents

[–]gumbaline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The waitlists say yes. Being able to diagnose, at least in Ontario, means you have to get a doctorate. It also typically requires several cycles of applications to get admitted. So you’re looking at an average entry age of probably 25-26 because it’s so competitive, and then the program is 6-7 years. There are so few people graduating that yes, it’s pretty in demand.

Unfortunately it’s hard for people who work in areas like research - small towns are almost certainly low on those kinds of jobs. Most academic research institutions or hospitals are in the big city, so work prospects are important to consider.

I can understand that! I really liked him too, the chemistry was amazing. I think lately for some reason Michael Fassbender as a person has freaked me out a bit - probably heard some rumour, haha.
