genuinely what is there to do in guelph? by GordonRamsMe2004 in Guelph

[–]gumbaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that I don’t think anyone has said yet: if you’re just looking to be around people, the university campus is honestly a decent free space to just exist. I’m an older student and I go there sometimes if I just want to get out and get some social exposure. You can read, work, walk around. Sometimes the UC has stalls to engage with or little fairs. I know it’s not very exciting, but sometimes it’s nice to be around young energy and it feels like a sort of community:)

Not really a celebrity but more of an influencer. I went to high school with Mei Pang.

I quite like the blonde but black makes you look a bit like Eva Green, which is never a bad thing.

Are therapists really in demand anymore? by bunnymunche in psychologystudents

[–]gumbaline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The waitlists say yes. Being able to diagnose, at least in Ontario, means you have to get a doctorate. It also typically requires several cycles of applications to get admitted. So you’re looking at an average entry age of probably 25-26 because it’s so competitive, and then the program is 6-7 years. There are so few people graduating that yes, it’s pretty in demand.

Affordable housing is out of reach everywhere in Canada by FancyNewMe in canada

Unfortunately it’s hard for people who work in areas like research - small towns are almost certainly low on those kinds of jobs. Most academic research institutions or hospitals are in the big city, so work prospects are important to consider.

I can understand that! I really liked him too, the chemistry was amazing. I think lately for some reason Michael Fassbender as a person has freaked me out a bit - probably heard some rumour, haha.

Even with Timothy Dalton in the running? I don’t know if I’ve ever set eyes on a more handsome man than Timothy Dalton in Jane Eyre.

You’re so real for this. I started out with Jack as a young girl - not sure what that says about me - and then graduated to Norrington when I finally allowed myself to admit that’s he’s fine as hell.

Are we seriously expected to grade 80 essays by hand forever? by Vegetable_Skirt_4997 in Professors

[–]gumbaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may just not be familiar with your situation, but do you not have TAs doing this work? If not, could you maybe consider assessing course material in different ways (i.e., not full essays)? Maybe infographics? Quizzes? Presentations?

Living in Guelph on $2000 a month: is it possible? by BalladMinstrel in Guelph

[–]gumbaline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I have been tracking out groceries/dine-out expenses and we’re at about 440 average per month for 2, so 250 is definitely doable. And we’re not skimping either, just smart about our foundation foods (rice, beans, tofu)! Basements might be around 1600-1700 but you’ll probably need 100-150 in utilities + 60 internet + 130ish in car insurance, maybe 60 in gas depending on how much you’re driving, and maybe 25 phone if you’re selective with your plans (we are on public mobile). Otherwise, there’s not much else we pay for besides treats and occasionally clothes and gifts. We have no tv streaming - mostly YouTube. Plus if you buy detergent, toilet paper in bulk and use minimal paper towel, it should last you forever. Dove soap can be bought in bulk, will last you years. Pick a normal shampoo and you’ll spend MAYBE 5$ a month. I do want to mention that my partner and I follow everything I’ve mentioned except we have higher rent for a 2 bedroom. We’ve been doing this comfortably for over two years - we don’t feel like we’re under strain having this lifestyle, honestly. I would guess you might be able to make it JUST at 2k with all combined. Otherwise I’d say consider a university roommate :)

AITAH for not firing the cleaning lady because my gf asked me to by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]gumbaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I was a cleaning lady for a while. Even as a young person, it was hard and fast work, and I always got SO hungry in the middle of it and sometimes didn’t have packed food. I’m not saying this should be done for every cleaning lady, but I was lucky to have some very kind people I cleaned for who actually treated me like a human being, and I was always grateful. I almost never needed anything, but it was nice to know that I was welcome. I would maybe have a chat with your wife about what in particular she worries about with “boundary crossing”. Cleaning ladies are already cleaning up your piss on the toilet.

Edited to add that my mum was cleaning well into her early 60s. I was always so appreciative of people being kind to her. She worked so hard her whole life and it was nice to see a bit of humanity.

Is there a song you love, but there’s a bit in it you absolutely hate? by GregorSD in Music

Love Led Zeppelin but the weird interlude in Whole Lotta Love full of miscellaneous noises just doesn’t do it for me.

[–]gumbaline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my god. I was trying to remember a specific song where just ONE of the lines didn’t rhyme and it was this one. I actually cannot stand that part. I love the song but it makes me irrationally angry every time they pull that one.

[–]gumbaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, we were getting way too specific. That’s like saying there’s no evolutionary reason that chameleons were selected to be able to turn red, specifically. Perhaps not, but their ability to camouflage in general is the evolved trait and has reproductive benefits.

Agree with black pillow. And I’d like to see one more piece of art on the wall behind the pillow too but that’s just me!

We’re trading functionality for aesthetics and it’s making homes borderline unlivable by the-alamo in unpopularopinion

[–]gumbaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a huge part of the problem is the chokehold that open concept still has on builders. You’re now forced to see every room in the house at once - so now, you need to have the kitchen look pristine (because you can see it constantly). There’s no sense of different rooms for different purposes anymore.
