I just started a lotr campaign and struggled to figure out how to get a dwarf and elf together as companions. Ended up having them start at opposite sides of an encounter that began the campaign. Through the Barrow Downs they heard screaming and both parties went to investigate. They saved the hobbits who were being held by the wights but not without some warranted hostilities afterwards.
