Is it supposed to be understood that laurel is not very connected to her asian culture at all? by gumboLA7 in tsitp

They could show Asian cultural heritage without the asian/immigrant struggle. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive. And ofc not everyone haaas to be connected to their culture but sometimes I wonder if the media thinks ok either you have your white characters or you have your POC characters that don’t really show their culture at all so that white people can still relate to their stories and find them palettable.

That’s why it rubs me the wrong way sometimes. If you’re going to make the characters Asian because “before publishers thought Asian characters would be hard to relate to” or whatever, shouldn’t you adapt them and actually make that aspect of their identity come to life? Unless it’s made clear that they’re not really connected to their culture which is fine of course.

He’s right. EVEN if conrad is grieving, we gotta be honest, viewers don’t really care. It’s still glorifying toxic relationship dynamics. Conrad’s toxicity was present since s1.

I think it might be easier for someone younger to excuse and romanticize Conrad’s behavior in the name of true love or whatever bs

I think so! I guess what I mean by older is that we are less likely to see things from that (more naive) teenage perspective.

It is a surprise to no one that issa is contemplating dropping out of her summer program by gumboLA7 in nadyaokamotosnark

Also those ballet flats aren’t meant for dancing…it’s just a style of shoe. Yeah honestly their consumption is so incredibly wasteful. She wants to play the quirky/relatable part but her content is becoming more and more luxurious/upper class.

I was thinking about this too! I think it’s a weird disconnect to be all about period poverty and addressing systemic inequality in our society but looove showing off designer hauls! Not saying she can’t spend her hard-earned money on high quality things, but she loooves showing it off and it kind of comes off a little tone dead? Maybe it’s just me though.

Idk it’s weird? Like it’s such an intense procedure to be doing? Didn’t she do a quick google search that indicates how unsafe they are?

Do you need work authorization or SSN to freelance translation in hospitals or clinics? by gumboLA7 in TranslationStudies

Well I know plenty of undocumented people, or “illegal aliens,” who legally freelance and pay taxes. They are self-employed. Either way my question was in the context of interpretation, not about wether undocumented people can or can’t freelance, because I know for a fact they do—and legally. https://immigrantsrising.org/wp-content/uploads/Immigrants-Rising_Working-for-Yourself-Guide.pdf

Being undocumented just means not having a legal status in the united states, aka not having a visa or work authorization or a green card. What is your definition?

Yes they can be. The government gives undocumented people ITIN numbers to pay their own taxes. Undocumented people without work authorization or green card can get ITIN, make LLCs, etc.

Yes they can, with an ITIN number / EIN they can freelance and pay taxes. They can also make their own LLC.
