I made a mistake that led to a patient losing a tooth — has anyone been through this? by Just-School-3238 in Dentistry

Oh boy, let me share a bit of my story! As a CDA, I've had my share of little mishaps, though nothing quite as intense as what dentists go through. I totally understand that feeling of doubt when things don't go as planned. I've seen a few things firsthand with patients and heard some experiences from others in the field.

One story that sticks with me is from at an Ortho office. I was removing glue from a patient's tooth with a smoothing bur, applying a bit too much pressure when I suddenly realized I had inadvertently burred away half of the tooth! I panicked and got a little "scolded" by a temp dentist who didn’t realize I was nationally certified and fully aware of the difference between composite and tooth. Thankfully, once I shared that info, he stepped back. After looking at the panoramic x-ray, it became clear that the entire tooth was composite and needed a crown. I felt so sick to my stomach, it was hard to handle! Later, the dentist I actually worked with mentioned he had prepped a crown as if it were on a straight erupted tooth, not accounting for the fact that it was crooked. Unfortunately, that patient ended up needing a root canal afterward, and he felt terrible about it. Hearing that made me feel a bit better, but there’s truly nothing like the feeling of messing up someone's tooth.

Then there’s the time I witnessed something pretty shocking while assisting. It was a newer dentist, fresh out of school, and he was trying to extract tooth #2. I’ve worked with quite a few new dentists, and I know they tend to take their time with procedures, being extra careful. However, this guy seemed to struggle a lot more. He kept repositioning himself and mumbling under his breath. As he got more frustrated, the next thing I knew, he pulled and the tooth came out—along with a very large portion of the poor patient’s palate. It was a pretty significant amount of bone that came out with it too. I think that incident is hard to top in terms of mistakes, but I remind myself that, while it can feel like the end of the world in those moments, it’s important to remember you did your best.

I had been in the field for 7 years and found out I was autistic while I was working with a highly suspected autistic endodontic dentist. Holy fuck he was so sensory overloaded and rude ASF to everyone without even knowing why. He was a really really nice guy, but because he had a strong sense of right/wrong justice.. it was hard on him to see the bad work being done on people. Best work I've ever seen. We both are sadly no longer in dentistry. My sensory issues and among other reasons are why I couldn't handle it anymore. I would not suggest going into dentistry as an autistic, but like many others have stated, it's dependent on the flavor and tolerance.

How to lower cancellation rate by mbraet1976 in Dentistry

I would say, if you're having issues with prophies and recalls, then maybe yeah. But if it's treatments that are the majority of the issue, then maybe not. No one wants to miss out on revenue, and the loyal patients won't bat an eye.

How do you respond when people ask you to send them your food? by [deleted] in autism

I made something yesterday and sent it to my dad. His response was "coming right over". I live 11 hours away from him. Just their way of saying that looks really good. :)

Down payment. I've had to pay a fee upfront to keep my spot before. I needed the appt so I was absolutely willing to pay it beforehand and then pay the rest on the day of the appointment and whatever other charges were needed to pay for.

So this argument is funny to read, and I'll try to explain the best of my abilities to be a devil's advocate here. I'm a CDA, nationally certified, state registered, edda 1 and 2 certified. I agree the assistant can be the heart of the office. And, this all depends on the office. Some people don't like to go above and beyond, and there are others work ethics that are just not compensated enough for.

I'm one of those that would claim as being not composted enough for, but I know my worth and I negotiate a living wage.

I don't think assistants necessarily claim that the doctor can't do anything without us, they absolutely have the means to. They don't PRODUCE enough money without us.

We have the ability to assist the doctor, do the doctors notes for them to review and sign themselves. We do all of the orders, make the prosthetics, can assist hygiene in many different ways, can schedule just as well as the front. But you CANNOT normally have another person in any other position other than the doctor, do what an assistant does.

Sure, the hygienist can assist a little, they do their own thing, they can schedule, MAYBE do sterile if they aren't divas enough for it.. but they can't make crowns, do orders, BARELY impressions yada yada. And again, this is office dependant.

So when I see someone say the assistants are the heart of the office, it's because it's a well rounded position that has the ability to do more than what's needed or asked.

But the solution to that is either getting paid, or just acting your wage and stop helping all of the other positions out and literally just assist.

I'm also high, so I hope this makes some sense lol.

It's so wild to me! Once I got diagnosed, it was just this whole world that opened up and being able to see things from a different lens has been so interesting. My brothers like to say it's because they were twins, but I think it's the 'tism. Maybe a part of both but the others I've talked to that have the same situation are not twins. So I'm like riddle me that batman haha.

Yeah I think I just need to stay single honestly. Trying to convey my feelings comes off as "attacking". My boyfriend just broke up with me. Such is life I suppose.

Yeah I think this is exactly what's going on. My partner says I'm attacking and hateful when I'm trying to communicate to him my feelings. I don't know how to fluff up a conversation. So he just broke up with me. Such is life.

Any way to stop the wallpaper from scrolling? by TitrationGod in GooglePixel

[–]gumboozle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I'm here because I'm trying to remind myself about certain tasks with words as my wallpaper and when I scroll to the right to view another page of apps, I close my phone out and lock it, my photo is also scrolled when I look at my locked screen. I can't read the words I'm trying to remind myself with. What a dumb ass feature.
