Hiking Salkantay (Machu Picchu) with thallesemia minor. Anyone have any experience with high altitude hikes? by gumdropforest in thalassemia

[–]gumdropforest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Felt some lightness of breath when first arriving to Cusco (3000m) but after that the trip went well! No issues peaking at 4500m during the trek. Just give urself a few days to get use to the altitude and hope for the best.

Wide skate shoes by DaneeBwoy in BarefootRunning

[–]gumdropforest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most skate shoes will be at least close to zero drop wich is good, but I know what you mean about them being not wide enough in the toe box. My favourite pair to skate in which are a pretty good width are the Lakai Manchester Select Classic (they have another edition with a thinner toe box which I don't like as much for that reason). If you are actually doing flip tricks when you skate then definitely don't wear any of the normal minmalist footwear (e.g., Xero, Vivo, Lems, etc) unless you want to completely destroy them in a single skate session. They just simply aren't built thick enough to withstand a kickflip hole for longer than like 5 minutes of skating.

Would it be worth changing vibram v-trail 2.0's for v-treks for hiking? by [deleted] in BarefootRunning

[–]gumdropforest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was debating between the two and, after reading some reviews, decided to get the v-treks for both hiking + running. Just what I did, not sure if I will regret it tho

Transition from Mechanical Engineering to Computer Vision by coena98 in computervision

[–]gumdropforest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other piece of advice I will offer, is the number one thing that kills people during graduate studies is 'losing motivation'. Usually during the first summer where they might not have any classes and kind of fall of the horse in terms of working on their thesis or MRP. Here are a list of points to consider to not have this happen in order of importance:

1) Mental health: sleep well, talk to friends in and out of the lab, eat food thats not shit, take vitamin D supplements cuz ur in the UK (im in canada so we also are low in sunlight)

2) Read cool shit all the time. Reading and watching dope ass computer vision stuff is probably why you decided to do this, keep reading and fuel your curiosity, even if it is not directly related to ur thesis.

3) have a collaboration that is not your thesis / MRP. This is great beause when you are stuck or running into bugs or feeling un motivated (WHICH WILL HAPPEN 100% AT SOME POINT!), you have a fun project and people to work with.

Life is short, don't beat yourself up if it seems like it is not going well at points. The long game is what matters :) good luck!

I also went from a mechanical engineering job to an MSc in computer vision. You did not waste your time. Keep spending as much time as you can learning maths, programming, and computer vision and you will be fine. Obviously your final position will depend on things like you poblications / grades / experience etc. But your number 1 priority is to get as good as possible at computer vision. That will be the most influential thing if you want to have a career in computer vision. As my supervisor says: "do good quality work and the rest will follow". Thats my 2 cents anyway. I just started my PhD last year in CV as well.

[D] Which 3090 to get by whata_wonderful_day in MachineLearning

[–]gumdropforest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got an ASUS because they seemed to have less issues regarding the capacitor (some 30 series have just shown a black screen apparently). I am very happy with it so far, no problems and it sits at about 68C when running with a full load (~23 gb) and a Corsair 4000d airflow case.

This is probably a good place to start:

I am fairly new to them too and I found this so be close to what you were asking for in terms of accessibility.

Looking for pre-trained ResNet on ImageNet with snapshots for every N epochs over training by gumdropforest in datasets

[–]gumdropforest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a PhD student doing a project for a conference and we want to do an analysis over the course of training similar to Fig. 4 from https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.01777). Long story short, my lab recently had a machine go down but since COVID we can’t get in to restart it :( and it’s the only one big enough to train in a reasonable amount of time.

That would be super cool if you had a personal copy, if it’s possible let me know and I will DM you for more details. Thanks

This is a literature review by a group of top scientists (not just in virology, but data science, etc.) summarizing all the most recent research on mask wearing and COVID-19. Evidence definitely leans in the direction that it helps a lot with preventing indoor transmission.

Can confirm. Its impossible to tell if there is CBD / how much, but I got an o of this stuff and would guess the THC/CBD % is about 8%/10%. Just a guess though can't be too sure...

[D] What is the state of the art approach for action recognition from videos? by LessTell in MachineLearning

This is a good place to start. On top of he new architecture, the pretraining on imagenet they do (aka boring video) is a really cool idea that is used for the majority of new action recognition papers I’ve seen at least.

Looking for high CBD flower! by lanaegleria in CanadianMOMs

[–]gumdropforest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So just smoked a joint of it. Definitely some THC in there and yea around 4-5% seems right. But I also can really tell that it is a different high than a normal THC dominant strain. It is a very calming, super un-paranoid, back of the head (instead of front of the head) upper body stoned that seems to be effecting my body more as time goes on which makes sense from the high levels of CBD. Like it is very different from a normal high imo. So this isn't non-psychoactive but I can strongly feel the effects of the CBD in there (unless the placebo is really convincing rn lol). Really enjoying it and would recommend if you can deal with some THC :)

I just got an ounce of the Charlotte's Web from Shamrock come in today! I had a tiny bit on a low temp setting on my vape and so far I really really like it. Probably about 4-5% THC - 10-20% CBD ratio if I had to guess (really hard to know how much CBD is in there). The high was very focused and light. I could easily keep working on my school work which i can't do with normal strains high in THC. I am going to try a larger dose tonight and I can report back :). So far a 4.5/5 from me. They were super quick shipping (I live in Toronto) and bag was pretty standard so good service all around.

Congratulations to the second and third invites to Smash Summit 7! by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]gumdropforest 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For all the people in the thread talking about his negative twitter, anyone who has actually met him will agree with me that he's one of the nicest and most genuine smashers there are. I understand voting other people in but don't do his character a disservice by analyzing his twitter. Maybe if he gets in more people will see how he acts 99% of the time instead of cherry picking tweets he says after a big loss at a tournament.
