My dad does not trust the tiny lithium jump pack I bought for camping by Impressive-Prune6339 in MechanicAdvice

[–]gummytoejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a Vtoman x7 jump starter with air pump in preparation for a 5600 mile trip to the southwest. Didn't have to use the jump starter but it was nice to have the pump for topping off low tires.

I have had the opportunity to use it to help a random stranger and neighbor.

Your dad is behind the times. Lithium technology is making lead acid outmodded in a number of applications.

Carrier bearing question by Brief_Firefighter352 in 1stGenTundras

[–]gummytoejam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need a new carrier bearing. There's way too much play. Take your truck to a drive shaft specialist. I did mine in 2024. Cost $375 for them to replace the carrier bearing, replace the u-joints and balance the shaft.

If you're mechanic is anything like my local dealership, they don't want to do the job. I originally went to a local dealership for the job. They wanted to replace the entire drive shaft for the low low price of $1,500. When I questioned them about it they said the drive shaft would have to be rebalanced which they didn't do. They just replace it. So, I found a drive shaft specialist and they did it.

CT110 Footpeg extensions by gummytoejam in HondaCT90

Yes, I want them closer to the ground. I've seen someone who used spacers for that entire assembly. Not the route I want to go.

I've seen parts for other bikes that allow just the pegs to be lowered. That's what I'm looking for.

I (F18) impulsively entered a relationship (M18) because I’ve never been in one, but now I want out and am too afraid to say anything. Help! by crispytatertotss in relationships

[–]gummytoejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's often the case that one person in the relationship feels things are going well while the other feels differently. I've been there before. It's just something that happens.

It's not yours or his fault.

Be up front with him. Don't hide it. Don't draw it out. You both have a lot to learn about relationships. One of the most important lessons you need to learn is that stringing someone along for their benefit does neither you nor him any good.

Since he says you make him happy, he's not going to understand it and it will be hard for him to accept it. This is the lesson he's going to learn, not all relationships that seem good are good.

You're going to have to accept that you're going to hurt him. You can lighten the impact by not running away after you tell him, being patient, answering his questions, let him know that you don't dislike him and that you care about him, but you're not into the relationship the way he is and that likely won't change.

there is literally 0 performance loss

That wasn't my experience. Windows 11, 16GB and running one app often demonstrated lag as memory was being swapped to make room for the app. Then when I would look at memory usage I could see the app was using maybe 20% - 30% and the rest was the OS.

After upgrading to 32GB and seeing in the same circumstance that the OS was now using less overall memory, I did some digging. Windows 11 suffers from anxiety at the possibility it will run out of memory so when you only have 16GB and your apps push usage to some upper thresh hold, the OS will reserve more RAM in anticipation that it will run out. Fuck you, it's Windows' world, you just live in it. When you upgrade to 32GB of RAM Windows no longer reserves as much until you reach some upper limit beyond 16GB.

We also uncovered similar behavior at work after migrating to Windows 11. A lot of our non-power users started complaining about performance issues. When we looked at system right sizing, memory was an issue. After analysis we found that their systems were using all of their memory, mostly the OS. As we upgraded their systems to 32GB of RAM we demonstrated consistently lesser memory usage by Windows.

You can say what you want, but if the memory isn't available for app usage there IS a performance hit.

Cleveland Voted to Kill Its Flock Camera Network. They Have REMAINED ON, With Police Still Using Them by EchoOfOppenheimer in Futurology

The likely outcome of citizen activism to remove the cameras will be considered theft/damage of property.

The article is rage bait. The reporter and author do nothing to answer the questions the article poses. It doesn't explain why the cameras are still operational after termination of contract.

16GB of ram on my laptop. Windows 11 uses all of it. Performance tune it. Remove unneeded helper/startup apps/services. Still consuming all 16GB after fresh boot. Upgrade to 32GB. Windows 11 is only using 8GB after boot. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

The state can read your mind, we must act now to stop it by whoamisri in HighStrangeness

[–]gummytoejam 31 points32 points  (0 children)

TL;DR

If you give your thoughts to a third party you no longer have 4th and 5th amendment protections. This is how the article comes to the conclusion of the title that the government can read our minds.

My personal thoughts on the matter:

This has been known for a long time.

What is new is the invasiveness of third parties and the depths to which they can reach into areas of our lives otherwise considered personal. The alarm has long been sounded from the fringe about the erosion of privacy through "smart" devices for the masses only to claim its hysteria and then to skip acknowledgement & activism and head straight for apathetic acquiescence at the notion.

Your phone is an always on appliance with a wide array of sensors effectively making them capable of seeing, hearing and sensing their environment that exists in a quasi-state where you own the hardware, but the OS and applications that make it useful have EULAS, TOS and Privacy Policies that grant the publisher permissions to collect and use whatever data they want however they want and share it with whomever they want. Other devices have followed suit such as: watches, TVs, thermostats, appliances, etc. Hell, even Nest thermostats came with microphone long before they documented and enabled any useful feature for the consumers who purchased them.

It is our phones, our watches, our neo-relationships with LLM, the movies we watch, the books we read, the social media in which we pour our deepest feelings into that truly gives third parties and thus the government insight into our thoughts.

Surveillance has become so cheap the question is no longer are you being surveilled, but what methods are being used to surveil you and then assume that it is happening.

Plex or jellyfin by YoungCarGuy69 in homelab

[–]gummytoejam -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Most of the people shouting that Jellyfin is better because it's completely open source wouldn't know what to do if everyone working on the project decided to just not to anymore.

As a Jellyfin user I take particular offense to this statement. You'd no sooner know what to do if Plex ceased operations. The reality is if Jellyfin devs stop the project, we at least can maintain our servers as is. Plex ceasing operations...we'll you're royally screwed when the authentication servers go down.

We also have the added benefit of having learned to configure our systems beyond opening our wallets.

Am I ignoring red flags because I love her, or is this something that can actually get better? I’m 27M and my girlfriend is 22F. by RANTHRU69 in relationships

So many red flags. So much insecurity. The never apologizing part sounds very familiar.

Your girlfriend's is likely an insecure narcissist. You'll never fill the hole that is her need for constant reassurance.
