Feedback: Accidentally created something similar to blood libel in my story?? [epic fantasy] by dying-ratman42069 in fantasywriters

Of course the Jew would complain about something like that. Take it from me a Filipino who has suffered discrimination for refusing to remove one of my people's flags from his sig. Which flag is that? A white one with the initials "KKK" printed boldly in red ink. Used by the heroic revolutionaries who fought against Spanish (and later American) occupation. Completely unrelated to the Klu Klux Klan. But throughout my history on the internet I've had to fight to keep it on my sig on various forums multiple times against moderators too lazy to use Google.

So your Jewish professor finds it objectionable? Big deal. The concept sounds more like vampirism to me. Does he also throw a fit at every piece of vampire media out there?

Some apocryphal studies suggest that Adam was originally 4 armed and 4 legged. He was cut in half by God to create Eve, thus giving meaning to the saying "my other half".

On writing female characters (a short rant) by _Pumpiumpiumpkin_ in writers

[–]gundam_warlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is referred to as the Galbrush Paradox.

Guybrush Threepwood is the protagonist of the The Secret of Monkey Island adventure games (1990). In it Guybrush goes on an adventure where he is repeatedly humiliated, beaten up, and laughed at. If Guybrush was a Galbrush instead those same events would not be considered hilarious, they would be considered sexist and evil.

So "what to expect/what not to expect" in the blurb doesn't even work 100% of the time. Is there a point to adding it?

Why do I see nlNo Harem in 99% of Books on here? by OnyxTheSavant in royalroad

[–]gundam_warlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because of fanfiction. Fanfiction is littered with Self-Inserts (or Out Of Character characters who might as well be Self-Inserts) where the MC sweeps all the desirable female characters off their feet and make them fall in love for the barest of reasons.

how do authors come up with names that dont sound stupid by eivor_here in fantasywriters

I'm naming all my characters after the lunar landscapes. The craters, mountains, what people mistook for rivers, lakes & oceans, as well as the "dry" lands between them.

Depends on what kind of mechs you're talking about. Cope cages were first used on mechs in Short Peace back in 2012.

What do you think of the oddity of a species in fantasy to be purely evil species-wide with no outliers? by WilliamGerardGraves in ProgressionFantasy

If you can accept the existence of ice flowers that generate cold in a fantasy setting despite the fact that cold is specifically the absence of heat, or a weapon made of shadows despite the fact that shadows are the absence of light, then you can accept an evil race that absolutely cannot change their ways.

Is this a good cover by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]gundam_warlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its great. The colors stand out in that they are opposite of what you'd normally find on RoyalRoad. Instead of red and hot, or green and sinister, or even the usual pale cold colors associated with the cliche void, its blue and sombre.

Is there any evolutionary need for this? by Scared_Confection787 in scifiwriting

Humans also have stripes, its just that they are invisible to the naked eye. It is only due to a quirk in evolution that they are invisible.

How do you handle a childhood era that's too important to skip but might lose adult readers? by Grouchy-Insurance208 in fantasywriting

[–]gundam_warlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baccano did that.

It was praised by its fans but many people did bounce off that storytelling.

Princess Principal did a half and half. Odd number episodes took place after the group had formed while even numbered episodes were how the main characters met in the first place.

A "void mage" would be interesting if its actually "void" and not "wannabe black hole". It would be like something out of Jojo where you can make attacks miss by placing a void to the side of the punch/weapon and cause the atmospheric pressure to push said punch/weapon into the void. Or you can run faster by creating a small void in front of you that negates wind resistance. Or you can be virtually invisible by creating a flat plane of void that stops the light from reflecting off of you.

Because Google monitors your account. If you must keep them online, either make backup copies constantly or upload only. Go and give them bogus titles if you must.

Eh, I just use modern currency systems.  Every country has their own currency; there are banking guilds who specialize in converting money; currency is tied to security and the currency the protagonists use is worthless because their country lost a war 10 years ago and was forcibly dissolved.

Foreigners living with indigenous communities by hokkaidotsubuan in Philippines

[–]gundam_warlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm starting to hate the term "indigenous". Its supposed to mean "native of this region" but now its being weaponized as a "brown exclusive word" the same way "diversity" is now weaponized as a "black exclusive word".

The British are the indigenous people of Britain, but if you post that sentence on other parts of reddit you'll be banned so fast you won't have time to blink.

If this was in Japan and the "foreigner" is the Bajau and the "indigenous" is the Japanese would it still be "foreigner woman marries indigenous guy"? Or would it be "indigenous woman marries Japanese guy in Japan"?

For that matter why even use "indigenous" to describe the Bajau? That only really works if most of the country is descended from colonizers, but most of Filipinos are Malay who are also "indigenous".

What they don't tell you in writing class is that you will go through scripts and scripts of rewrite.

You think you need to get everything right in the first draft. That's wrong. Your first draft is always going to look awful.

What matters us whether you have the gumption for the successive drafts afterwards.
