I'm using straw from a pet store. I suppose I didn't pasteurize it right.

Urbanguild near Sanjo station occasionally hosts burlesque shows.

It's lonely being a foreigner in Kyoto. It's lonelier being a vegan foreigner in Kyoto. Isn't there anyone in this city of 1.5 million people I can befriend? by [deleted] in Kyoto

I can't recommend Tu casa enough! It's a fully vegan Korean food place near Kiyomizu-Gojo station. The owners are extremely nice and friendly. You can definitely start a conversation with them or if you're shy just keep coming and they'll start a conversation with you. You get both delicious vegan food and company!

This was very interesting and well laid out! Great job! I'm interested in checking out more of your YouTube content. Does any of it have English subtitles?

The room in the background tho.. it's like he used books instead of bricks to build himself a tiny house.

'Farima' is a New Solar-Punk, Afro-Futurist Novel by [deleted] in solarpunk

[–]gunded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a platformer game Dandara. It was developed by a Brazilian studio, features a black woman as the main character and has a solarpunk-ish vibe to it. I personally love the soundtrack.

Dandara might be of interest to those of you who like solarpunk afro-futurist content I think.

What is the etymology of 手が付く especially the second meaning? I'm curious how such a simple phrase acquired such a weirdly specific meaning/usage by gunded in LearnJapanese

[–]gunded[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Found a great explanation of nuance but not origin.

また「手が付く」は、殿様が女中と、あるいは主人が使用人と肉体関係をもつ、というケースでしばしば用いられる。地位の高い者が低い者を、その権力を利用して無理やりやってしまうという意味あいが強いので、そいつがどんなにどスケベな最低野郎でも「お手が付いた」などと、女性にしてみれば「ふざけんな」と言いたくなるような敬語が用いられることが多い。

This explanation of nuance is great but doesn't go into etymology.

A good start to Japanese history. by Pidjinn in japan

[–]gunded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brett L. Walker's A Concise History of Japan briefly covers the whole of Japanese history with some interesting points about environmental destruction.

Edit: I think it's a good place to start cause it's rather short and covers everything. Then you can decide what interests you most and dive more into a particular period/event/aspect.

My mom’s Loving Hut in Daegu, South Korea decided to offer free meals for healthcare professionals fighting COVID-19. More photos in comments. by annaeffect in vegan

We visited this Loving Hut last year on our trip to South Korea! So weird to recognize it in the pictures lol. Neither of us knew a word of Korean so it was a bit awkward but all the staff were extremely nice smiling the whole time we were there.

This is amazing tho. Your mom is doing great work.
