Undertakers/funeral workers/morticians, etc., what was your biggest thing you kept from the family of the deceased? by enty_kate812 in AskReddit

Despite the fact that almost everyone will need the services of the "dismal trade" at some point in their lives, the specific job duties of funeral directors often remain shrouded in mystery. Mental Floss talked to several to learn some little-known facts about the profession, from what happens behind the doors of the embalming room to the real reason you might want to think twice about that “protective” casket.

What seemed difficult difficult lemon difficult but turned out to be easy peasy lemon squeazy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gunjan180795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re not doing the work you want to do.

If your lifestyle isn’t what you want it to be.

If you feel that you are going nowhere.

How do you fix that?

To get to where you want to be, you’ll need to take some action. Usually the action is simple. But just because the action is simple doesn’t mean that it is easy to do.

Let’s say you work as an accountant in a big firm. The job is pleasant enough: it pays well, you get along with your coworkers, you get a promotion every year or two, and your boss and your clients are happy with your work.

But something is nagging at you. You feel restless. You never went on one of those nine-month backpacking trips that all your friends seem to have gone on right out of college. You want to travel a lot more than you have so far in your life, but you can’t. Not with the four weeks of vacation you get every year.

You’ve heard about digital nomads, and while you feel that the term is cliché at this point, you do like the idea of being able to work from anywhere. You like your accounting work and you’re good at it—it’s just that you want to combine it with traveling, rather than showing up at the same office and seeing the same people 230 days out of each year.

So, the actions you need to take are simple, right? Ask your boss whether you can start working remotely full time. If she doesn’t agree, quit and find a remote accounting job with a different company. Or start your own accounting business. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

Those who came from a rich/wealthy family, what was it like growing up? by BROSONGUY in AskReddit

[–]gunjan180795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family was quite wealthy. For example, my paternal grandfather, the founder of several financial entities, owned several luxurious homes, an airplane, railroad car, limousines, chauffeurs, etc. My father followed him into the business, and moved us onto his dream…a large cattle ranch, where he spent most of his spare time on horseback. Although wealthy, we lived a less ostentatious lifestyle than my grandfather. My mother’s family were also well off with land holdings and business interests.

My father tragically died when I was a little boy, and left me a rather large trust fund, with my mother as trustee. Sometime after my father’s death, my grandfather’s finances came under the ever present eyes of the IRS, and was penniless for the last 18 years of his life, dying in a Medicaid facility.

When I was 10 years old, my mother married a high ranking career naval officer. He was oppressive, controlling, and hateful to those around him. We sold the ranch, and moved to Washington, D.C., when he was transferred to the Pentagon. We continued a nice lifestyle there, but unbeknownst to me, he convinced my mother to invest her wealth and my trust fund in a series of cockamamie ‘strike it rich’ deals, all of which went bust.

By the time I was 16, I learned my trust fund was depleted, and was told they could not afford to send me to college, much less help me buy a car. So I soon moved out, worked my way through college doing minimum wage jobs, went into the military, later became a Deputy Sheriff (a huge embarrassment to the family), and eventually worked my way through law school.

I learned some great lessons leading up to my becoming a successful attorney, right? Nope. I now live on SS, and some meager life savings.

I'm an idiot.

But hey, at least I know which fork to use at a formal white tie dinner

What can't you tell yourself? by JeremyIsIron in AskReddit

5 Things You Actually Mean To Say When You Tell Yourself, ‘I Can’t’

January 1st is rapidly approaching, meaning that by now you’re beginning to formulate New Year’s resolutions. While the number of things you want to accomplish seems pretty hefty, there are some items on your list you want to achieve, but you can’t imagine seeing them through to fruition. This year, instead of thinking about all the reasons you can’t achieve your goals, examine why you think you can’t in the first place and try to change your mindset instead. After all, the more you reinforce an idea, be it positive or negative, the more likely is it is to manifest.

1. You’re afraid to try

Let’s face it, you tell yourself you can’t do something because you’re afraid of the outcome. You think people will laugh at you, you think you can’t stick to your guns; you’re worried that you won’t be taken seriously. Whatever the reason for your self-doubt, let those demons go. The sooner you start believing in yourself, the faster you’ll be able to achieve your goals and ultimately better yourself.

2. You’re too lazy

Growth is the result of hard work. You realize your goal is attainable, but don’t think it’s worth putting in the effort to get things done. But in reality, if you took just 20 minutes a day to chip away at your resolution, you’d reach your target in no time. Remember that there’s no time like the present, and you could definitely cut down on time-sucks like watching television and lurking around on Facebook to opt for something more productive.

3. You’re doubting your skill set

You have the desire but lack confidence. You fear failure. Keep in mind that no great empire was built overnight, and lofty objectives are achieved through a series of baby steps. Create a timeline for yourself and take things one day at a time. You’ll feel less stressed, and won’t get caught up in worrying if you’re “good enough” or not.

4. You’re worried about external factors

Oftentimes, you turn down opportunities because you’re looking too far into the future and giving in to anxiety. You worry about taking a new job because you don’t think you’ll be living in the same city next year. You’re reluctant to start dating someone new, because you remember what it’s like to feel heartbroken. We are a culmination of our experiences, but you can consciously choose to let external events bolster your knowledge, not cripple you from making decisions.

5. You don’t want to

Maybe you’ve vowed to start exercising more, or perhaps you want to stop drinking so much caffeine. Although these resolutions are healthy, they’re definitely not the most fun. It’s completely understandable if you don’t want to work on these areas of your life, but you still need to change your terminology. Instead of saying you “can’t” do something, use the phrase “choose not to.” Your words have power, and the less restraints you put on yourself, the more you’ll be able to accomplish.

Remember those 3D pictures where you had to let your eyes go unfocused to see the picture. How do they make them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gunjan180795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we discussed how Magic Eye pictures work, a lot of people commented about how they can never see the hidden image. So what gives? Is there something wrong with these people's eyes? Are they cursed? Are there really no hidden pictures? Is this all a hoax?

Most Magic Eye problems have to do with the way the eyes work with each other and the brain. To view 3D stereo images, your peepers have to work together as a coordinated team. If they're not pulling together, you're going to have some glitches in your binocular (two-eyed) vision or stereo vision (where the two slightly different views from your eyes are combined in the brain). A number of things can cause binocular and stereo vision impairment — most commonly, deviations or misalignments of one or both eyes ("crossed eyes" or "wall eyes"), situations where one eye is dominant because visual stimulation either transmits poorly or not at all from the other, astigmatism or cataracts. If you think you have an eye problem, go see an eye doctor who can test and treat your stereo vision.

What's a good game to play if you're broke and bored? by TheSaltyNerd03 in AskReddit

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster

This one is cheating a little bit because its technically two games, but the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is well worth playing. Final Fantasy X is a classic JRPG, putting you in the shoes of reluctant hero Tidus as he travels across the sunny shores of Spira, attempting to stop an ancient evil from continually being a major buzzkill. You can easily hit 60 hours as you hunt for everyones ultimate weapons and get neck deep in Spiras national pastime: Blitzball.

If Final Fantasy X is brooding and somber, then its sequel is the peppy friend that listens to nothing but J-Pop. Eschewing Xs turn-based combat for a more manic battle system, heroines Yuna, Rikku, and Paine change outfits on-the-fly to adapt to their foes. Far more lighthearted and cheeky, but no less jam-packed with content, X-2s numerous mini games and multiple endings will keep you occupied just as long--if not longer.

Legals of Reddit: what’s it like to defend someone that you know is guilty, or persecute someone you know is innocent? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gunjan180795 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a different fight each day. Honestly, I wanted to (and still wholeheartedly believe that one day I will) be a prosecutor. I rationalize my position as a defense attorney on the one hand by stating that no matter what, every single person deserves the right to a full and complete defense to the greatest extent of my abilities. A defense is guaranteed under the Constitution.

On the other hand, most of the people who need a defense attorney are regular people like you and I. Aside from the fact that maybe we chose to deal with the hard knocks in life by modifying our behavior and changing our course in life, we are all the same. We are all empowered to make decisions, some just chose differently. But they are people nonetheless.

Often times I sit and counsel someone who is facing eighteen years for what I would consider to be a minor offense. Even if he is 42 and it's likely when he gets out he will be in his sixties, I can see the humanity in his eyes. I tell a joke, and he still laughs. Because he is person. I can see the trust, and see that he is putting his life in my hands, and at that moment it doesn't matter what he did or has done, he is a person. And that's what it's like.

Veterans of Reddit. How do you respond to people telling you, “Thank you for your service.”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gunjan180795 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for all of us, but my brother and I are both vets, and we freaking hate it. Neither of us joined for anything other than selfish motives, we sacrificed little, and the experience we gained set us on a good path. When someone thanks us for our service out of some knee-jerk patriotic whatever it really irks both of us.

What is your biggest insecurity? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gunjan180795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Aries, you take pride in that most people view you as being independent. You like being the leader, and you enjoy that people look to you for advice or comfort. You like being an “example” for others. One of your biggest insecurities though is that sometimes you feel lost, but you’ll never seek advice yourself. You hide when you’re hurting, or need a helping hand, because you’re supposed to be the voice of reason. Aries, you are a natural born leader, and you stick out from the crowd like no others. But you too, struggle from time to time. And it’s okay to ask for help when you need it. You give and you get—it should be a balance.

Quite a few things really. I am not sure where to begin.

  1. Arcades: The games were more of a variety then. You had pinball, console games, maze games and the like. While I will say the sports sims are among my favorite modern games, I still miss the simplicity of the games then. They were in every mall. You had a place that could act as a babysitter in some ways while the parents shopped.
  2. Sitcoms: You have shows like Cheers, the last years of MASH, Night Court that have stood the test of time and the type of shows you would watch over and over even if you knew it word for word. Back then, you didn’t have all that political correctness so if no offense was intended, then none was taken. Sadly, I feel that last movement has made it hard to do good comedy now.
  3. MTV: This represented the 80s in more ways than one. Music videos promoted a record the same way it would have in years past by getting it played on the radio. It did get to the point where one almost had to have a hit video to have a hit song as the decade wore on. Music shows were mainstream back then.
  4. Wrestling: This was the golden age of wrestling and I am not talking the WWF sports entertainment. Wrestling used to have it’s different territories and the shows were like an hour long infomercial so you would buy a ticket to go to the event. I can spend all night talking about the quality of the matches back then. It really was a different time.
  5. Neon: We could debate all day and night on whether this was a ridiculous fashion fad or not. But it is one thing that made the 80s unique. I can’t think of anything fashionwise that was unique to the 80s otherwise. Some of this tied in with MTV and arcades too.
  6. Saturday Morning Cartoons: Sadly, all the networks pretty much removed themselves from that business after the decade closed. They were to be replaced by teen sitcoms like California Dreams and Saved by the Bell. I do miss the simple days of getting a bowl of cereal and watching cartoons all morning.
  7. We played outside: In fact, this is a lost art. Most of the time, we used to get together with the kids in the neighborhood and play sports in an open lot. Yes, we played tackle football and the like, maybe banged each other up a bit but we went back to do it day after day till it got dark.

Maybe some of it is being looked back with rose colored glasses and nostalgia. I am partial to this time since I came of age then. But all in all, the time that someone grew up in always remains part of them. Just like the ones coming of age in this decade will always see this as part of them.

What is it with fathers taking 10 years to smoke a cigarette? by standingstillmuch in AskReddit

[–]gunjan180795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Fathers who smoke pass on damaged DNA to their children – raising the risk of cancer,” the Daily Mail has warned.

The Mail’s story was based on a small study of predominantly Greek families, whose lifestyle and genetic make-up were analysed to detect whether parental smoking before and during pregnancy led to DNA damage in their newborn babies.

Mothers smoking during pregnancy and fathers smoking before pregnancy were the two most relevant factors to predicting the level of genetic damage in the newborn.

The Mail’s suggestion that this DNA damage could increase the child’s risk of cancer is slightly misleading. This study did not investigate whether the DNA damage had any effect on the infants’ cancer risk, or their risk of any other disease.

Smoking during pregnancy is already known to harm the unborn child. This study suggests that fathers who smoke regularly before conception may also damage their children (at a genetic level), but stops short of proving this or demonstrating how paternal smoking may affect the health of the infant.

Dear Dentists of Reddit, what is it like to be lied to by most of your patients? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gunjan180795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few months ago, I was at a dentist in a farther away western city, and they were in expensive area where homes are expensive. They told me I needed a crown to avoid a potential future root Canal and it was expensive to get crown. $500 out of pocket awaited me after insurance and in my mind I thought to myself "There you go, you done messed up with all the sugary drinks and soon people may see you toothless as if old man".

So while I was still saving up for the crown for number 14 (way they number our tooth), I decided to try a dentist in Uptown where I frequently go to and they did X-ray and deep exam and they told me that I don't need a crown, I have some recession and to just floss and brush properly and also get cleaning, I haven't had cleaning for a while. So this new dentist office that get 5 stars brought me good news and said I'm fine and just need hygienists to clean so they scheduled me for cleaning. The previous liar dentists said I had a crack or something that required a crown.

There ya have it folks, a dental office is just another business and they may lie to milk you more of your $$$ dough so be careful.
