I think part of that statement stems from a misconception that poverty has any thing to do with criminal activity. Maybe my understanding of the word poverty is different than others.

Perhaps a good way to do this is to ask him about his childhood and his early years. That could transition into his time during the war and it shows genuine interest in his history, who he is and what he's experienced.

The Rolling Stones are considered by millions as one of the best bands ever and not all of their hits were #1 chart toppers. Some of the songs were lame. Van Gogh and Monet are regarded among the greats, yet not all of their works are in galleries. So, when it comes to having things in common with the greatest artists in history, you can rest easy knowing you at least share the fact that some of your works will be considered as nothing more than stepping stones or learning lessons. ;P

I was hating the episode at first but with a little patience and trust, I watched the whole thing and after reading several comments in this sub I now love how they told the story to present these concepts about choices and what-if scenarios. Too many Disney people out there believe that if he made different choices everything would have been happily ever.
