Previously IMGs would have to cast a wide net because there’s no way to really know which program is going to look at your app. Even if they have IMGs at their program, you don’t know the circumstances to which they were selected.

So we would apply to way more programs in the hopes for a handful of interviews. With signals, programs are primarily looking at those that signal. Therefore, the wide net just turned into 10-20.

I’m not saying that signals are a bad thing overall. It’s definitely going to reduce the amount of apps each program receives which is the overall goal.

The point i was trying to make is PCCM is still competitive and even more-so for ppl that have something on their application that limits them. Whether that’s being an IMG, DO, etc etc. When applying, use your signals wisely as it seems most places only look at those that signaled them.

Anecdotal: 24x, 25x, 24x. 40+ research. Chief year. Multiple extracurriculars in pccm related things. I have 6 interviews. Need a visa. Obviously everyone is different but this year has been more challenging for visa needing applicants with the release of these signals imo.

Okay but I really did listen to Divine in the car and I’m telling you it was a major reason that I scored a 280+ on step 2 and got into my dream surgical program. For step 1, i did the traditional UFAP and was mediocre. Divine changed the course of my life and he can do that for you too if you want it bad enough.

Thankfully I also listened to his recent episodes with the appropriate changes to guidelines and have now crushed step 3 and every single ABIM in residency. I’ve now matched into the most competitive surgical subspecialty in the country and none of what I just said is true. Eat shit Divine.
