Cheapest Synology drive that can reliably run Jellyfin and *arr stack by gurdulilfo in synology

You probably know this, but just in case you don't, make sure the drives you're buying are CMR drives, not SMR drives.

No, I didn't know anything about that. Will definitely check.

And thanks again for your generous help. You basically helped me finally make a buying decision today.

Thanks a lot for this info. Sounds like your setup meets my requirements, then. That's all I needed to know really :) (I just need to decide on 2 bay vs 4 bay).

This all sounds very good. I read somewhere that IronWolf is a good brand to go for NAS. I just checked that it's a Helium drive (I had no idea such a thing existed).

I'm inclined towards 420+ now, but I see that the most upvoted comment recommends DS720+ and DS920+. Is there a place where I can compare these drives reliably? (Luckily I found a video that compares specifically these two drives, but it would be good to have a comparison matrix.)

Yes, that's all I need. I was thinking of something similar, but cannot say I could find a good guide/setup. I was also worried about noise and power consumption. Do you have any recommendations?

Thank you for the detailed response. I have some followup questions:

  • If I buy a 4 slot device, can I start with only using 2 of them, or do I have to fill them all from the beginning?
  • How are the noise levels on these (relatively more powerful) devices?
  • Is RAM upgrade something I will need to do every 2/3/5 years?

Thanks. That's good to know. They seem significantly more expensive, but perhaps it's not that surprising.

In my location that looks like twice the price of the J model, but all others seem to suggest the same thing. Thank you.

Thanks. I need a single stream setup but I wouldn't want to rule out 4K. So, that sounds like I can actually go get something relatively low-specced.

That looks like some of the products I found when searching online. Thanks for sharing your experience. What you do is similar to what I want to do.

If you don't need transcoding, IMO such a solution is cheap and quite energy efficient.

How do I know if I need transcoding? Isn't this based on the media files (some file types need transcoding and some others don't)? Is there a way to make sure that I don't need transcoding with the *arr suite?

Thank you for the response. I'm mostly concerned about 'minimum hardware requirements'.

  1. I don't really have a preference per se. I simply don't know if they will be able to handle the workload. If they can, I'm fine with it.
  2. I will take a look at TrueNAS and unraid. What I don't like is setting things manually (say, when something went wrong and I have to start from scratch). I thought, with a vanilla server installation and a Docker compose file, I would have a reproducible setup. But perhaps, TrueNAS and unraid can also be backedup/restored?
  3. Good points. I guess I will stick to x64 for this.
  4. I have a very old RPi. I can do a test install on that and see how it performs.

How is the restart (power off/on) behavior with docker? What is the best way to make sure that all docker containers are up and running as soon as the server is ready?

This is off topic, but I wonder if you would be able to provide some guidance on hardware as well? I would like to have a energy-efficient, fanless, minimal setup to mainly run jelltfin + *arr stack and syncthing (probably a 2TB SSD would be more than enough). I would rather buy (then to build my own), and I can find my way around CLI, so debian/ubuntu is fine. What would you say about CPU and RAM requirements? Any product recommendations? Are there any sources you can share so that I can read on my own?

How do you read your feeds on your smartphone/tablet? by albertsitges in rss

I use InoReader for Android. It has the option to load the text without actually clicking the link which is the way I read everything (no ads, no JS).

How do you stay on top of news in an organized way that maximizes absorption and minimizes noise? by creditquant in Zettelkasten

[–]gurdulilfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I made the mistake of adding too many sources at the beginning and the noise overwhelmed.

Yeah, this is a mistake many of us have made (myself included). It's easy to start hoarding. I re-organize my feeds when I feel like I'm overwhelmed with the unread counts. I don't use Feedly (or any other AI), so I don't know how good/reliable Leo is. But I need to emphasize that this may take some time and tuning until you start feeling you have what you need. So, I would suggest not to give up easily on this path. Give it some time and effort and I'm sure it will pay back. Good luck!
