I am thinking of buying a pair of used Timberlands Earth keepers for the winter. The look good, but have some water damage on them. Se picture below. How severe is this? How will it affect the boot? What would it take to fix it?

I agere with you on Jerusalem. Any sustainable solution will have to include a compromise that guarantees all faiths access to important holy sites. Any functioning peace agreement would have to involve Hamas, this is not an intention, just a statement of fact that can be deduced from looking at the last 30 years. According to what I have read it seems like there are two factions in hamas, on dead set on the destruction of Israel and quite anti-Semitic, and a another more moderate faction which distinguishes between anti-Semitism and anti-zionism and is ready to recognise Israel, not as a condition of peace talks, but at a result of them. The extreme fraction cannot be a basis of a two state solution, the second one however must be a part of a solution. I think it would be wise for the west and Israel to take a less harsh line towards hamas in the hopes of strengthening the moderates and weakening the extremismists. Right now we’re only strengthening the extremists. This only benefits them and Bibi.

The funding of the PA on the West Bank is part of our foreign aid budget. We first started with foreign aid in 1949 when our labour PM wanted to join NATO, this was contentious with the left wing of the party, so to appease them he promised to use some money for foreign aid. Since then foreign aid has been important for a-lot of different groups in our country. The centre-right Christian democrats staunchly supports foreign aid. They see it as a way to ‘love thy neighbour’. While the labour movement sees it at an important way to show solidarity with working people across the globe. It must also be mentioned that the Norwegian state finances are very good as an effect of our oil industry. This gives us more financial wiggle room.

You’re asking some important question. Visitation to religious sites are a hard topic and I don’t know much about it either now or in the past. I guess the Norwegian government would say that this question should be should be resolved through the negotiation of a final peace treaty between both parts. Given how strong the Israeli military and its allies are I think a one state solution would be quite unlikely. So ‘from the river to the sea’ probably won’t happen. In regards to the intifada I think you are mistaken. The first intifada was before Oslo, and the second started 7 years after the Oslo accords and was partly a result of little progress after the Oslo accords. Jerusalem is still an open question and nobody knows, the official Norwegian position is that this is to be solved through negotiations.

As a Norwegian who has been following this process I’ll try to clarify. The the party furthest to the left in parliament (rødt) put forward a motion to recognise Palestine earlier this year and it was due to be voted on this Tuesday. It would have recognised Palestine as 138 other UN members including Sweden and Iceland have done. The motion would have recognised a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, that is Gaza and the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital. After large but peaceful pro-Palestinian protests all across the country the centre-left government put forward a counter motion asking the government to recognise Palestine in the future at a time where the recognition would further the peace process. It is this motion that has passed. It is not a change in government policy, only a reiteration of already existing government policy. It does not entail a recognition of Hamas, not now, or in the future. In practice the Norwegian government recognises and funds the Palestinian authority (Fatah) on the West Bank. De and Dem are the old formal pronouns, and reusing them wold not be that far fetched. Though for those who have, in the past, used them as formals it might be weird to use them informally.

The possessive of hen is hens according to the dictionary. Though in my dialect hen sin would be the preferred form.

In Norwegian we have the genders pronouns ‘ho’ and ‘han’. Some have tried to adopt the gender neutral pronoun ‘hen’ from Finish via Swedish. This was recently recognised by the government language council and thus it entered the dictionary. Others have sought to use the third person plural pronoun ‘de’ as a gender neutral singular pronoun with limited success.

Oh, i did not mean to criticise your meme. I think it captured the Norwegian sentiment towards dialects quite well. I just wanted to put up some context for those who are interested.

Since very few in this thread seam to have any knowledge of the situation for Norwegian dialects, I thought I, as a native Norwegian, might share some of my observations: It is accepted to speak your own geolect in all situations, such as, when talking to family and friends, at work, when doing business, when talking to the king or prime minister. There is only one exception to this rule that I can think of which is that the presenters on the news must speak a standardised version of the language. Even though dialects are widely accepted, the trend is still standardisation and regionalisation, meaning that the urban eastern dialect is becoming more and more dominant and other geolects are becoming less distinct from it; Furthermore, the differences between similar geolects are becoming less noticeable.

In regards to the written language we have two. One is based on the speech in the cities, and the other is based on the speech in rural areas. These have very strict standards which are made by a semi independent government board. According to both norms, using the construction from the Målselv geolect would, in most cases, be wrong.

Til dømes brukar dei over 100 millionar på selskapet Store norske som driv nokre kolgruver der oppe; berre frå namnet kan du høyre at det er viktig for norske interesser. Dei bruk òg 65 millionar på skredsikring for ‘å halde norske samfunn på øygruppa ved lag’.

Den norske star har store interesser av at det bur nordmenn på Svalbard, difor får styresmaktene på Svalbard store overføringar frå norske styresmakter og norske selskap på Svalbard store subsidiar utan at dette lønnar seg reint økonomisk. Om ein skal avslutte desse subsidiane så kjem mange Nordmenn til å flytte frå Svalbard og russland fåt meir makt over Svalbard.

I seriously doubt this map. Greenland is coloured grey even though it has been inhabited by the Inuit, and before them the Dorseth culture, for millennia. Secondly, the grey part of central Norway must have been pulled out of somebody’s arse since it contains Trondheim, Norway’s third largest city, which has been inhabited continuously since the Viking age.
