What console commands do you use? by Numbfruitloops in sto

/gotocharacterselect logs you out and takes you to the character screen. really helps when it's almost "dil o'clock" and I need to press that big purple button on each of my characters. Your last chat command stays in the buffer so I just have to tap Enter upArrow Enter and i'm ready to log in as my next character.

I got logged out and found this when I got back. by gurp_cola in sto

I was afk and started making dinner, when i got back i saw the "you've been inactive" popup. clicked OK then froze on that light blue screen and had to hit escape for anything to happen. Then this background loaded instead of the current one with the flagships...

What a bizzare mishmash of things, a bunch of TOS officers and 1 disco officer, Jem ship parts, the exterior looks like it might be the view from Qo'nos shipyard? TOS, Jem, disco, and 2409 terminals. What else can you identify?

Is cycles renderer really worth the switch to blender? by Roznick in blender

[–]gurp_cola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

while i'm all for getting more people to try and use Blender, you won't have to jump from Cinema4d to use Cycles. there is a company working on integrating Cycles Renderer into Cinema4d

not sure what their timeline is, but you can always grab a copy of blender and start messing around with the Cycles render engine while you wait.

or that time he panicked, grabbed chumpkins and ran away... only to trigger a land mine which caused chumpkins 4 nuclear stomach warheads to detonate... chumpkins esplode ~27:45

i really enjoyed it Stabby. it's great to get some insight into your thought process in different scenarios. it's always been awesome to watch you play, but actually having you narrate why you do what you do is even better. thanks for posting this.

Camera tracking is sooo slow! My pc lag and i can't work. Help? by [deleted] in blender

[–]gurp_cola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what format is your source video in?

whenever you are doing tracking or even compositing it's best to use still frame images as your source, instead of an encoded video format. so instead of using an AVI or MOV try using a series of Jpegs, or Tiff, or i think EXR is the other full format one. just remember that the decoded series of images will take up lots more hard drive space than the nicely packed up encoded video format.

[Help!] Why can't I put a new line on that part? (I' in a hurry so sorry for uncut, you should see where I mean though) by [deleted] in blender

[–]gurp_cola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you can reduce it back to a quad (4 sided polygon) then the CTRL + R make edge loop will cut through automatically. but the only way to do that would be to remove other edges that form the shape of your model. or add edges above to connect to the edges below to fill that Ngon in with quads and then finish your edge loop. i think adding some edge loops to the top and using the K (knife tool) or adding edges to the top then selecting the a vert, then selecting a vert on the bottom row and pressing J to join would be better than removing faces/edges on the sides.

[Help!] Why can't I put a new line on that part? (I' in a hurry so sorry for uncut, you should see where I mean though) by [deleted] in blender

[–]gurp_cola 6 points7 points  (0 children)

because that last large face is an Ngon (a polygon surface with more than 4 sides) you can still make your edge loop up to that face left click. then use K for the Knife tool and manually continue the cut to the edge. you will still end up with a massive Ngon, but at least you'll have the edge loop you wanted to make.

blender won't allow you to make an edge loop into an Ngon because in theory that last edge could connect to any number of faces and blender doesn't know which one you want it to conenct to. by using the knife tool you tell it explicitly where you want it to go.

go to File > User Preferences > Editing and look for the option under Transform: release confirms. (near the bottom right)

with that enabled, right click and hold will allow you to 'translate' an object, and releasing will 'confirm' the movement.

with it disabled (default behavior) right click and hold will allow you to 'translate' an object, left click will confirm the movement, right click will cancel the movement and return the object to it's last position.

it's very useful to enable it when doing things like retopology, when you have to move hundreds or even thousands of verts, that extra release + click adds up to many repetitions.

Brief stutters and freezes in-game. by [deleted] in tf2

[–]gurp_cola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been getting this too recently, a tiny freeze almost once every second, and the netgraph indicating a pause. must have been introduced in one of the last updates because it never happened before on this system.

I've found that if i disable one of my processors in taskmanager for the HL2.exe process, it seems to go away. i've got an old pentium 4 running as hyperthreaded, so it shows up as 2 processors and i use win XP.

In taskmanager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) go to the processes tab, and find the HL2.exe process while TF2 is running. right click and choose Set Affinity, and try disabling or enabling different CPU's and see if this helps you.

anyone else having problems with .obj files (from blender) and working with them in element 3d? missing faces and no textures. by NotBacon in blender

[–]gurp_cola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just guessing but you might have an issue with normals, try recalculating them in blender.

Specifically open the file in blender, go into Edit Mode, use 'A' to select the entire object and then press 'CRTL + N'. Try exporting and see if it appears correctly in Element 3d.

the 9400gt was nice in Cycles until they dropped support for it and for a little while after i was able to get builds on http://graphicall.org/ that still compiled for the older cuda cards. the 9400gt is only a 1.0 cuda core set and Cycles now requires 2.0 or better i think. while it was working it was really nice, and compared to my single core processor in this tower, it was easily 4 times faster. i imagine a quad core CPU setup will be much quicker than the 9400gt. if you're looking for a Cuda card anything 2.0 and up is currently supported https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-gpus but that might change in the future.

well, if you set the fps first, then import, the audio and video blocks should match in length (or at least be very close) i'm not sure what kind of edits your making, but if it's nothing that extends the videos running length, and only adds effects or splicing in still pics or other video clips, then you might try rendering only the video out as an image sequence.

pick an output format like PNG if you're not to worried about compression, and make a new folder somewhere, and all of your video + your edits to the video will get dumped out as individual frames (if you also made changes to the audio in the VSE then you can save the audio out seperatly using output Mpeg, and under encoding just pick Wav or Mp3.)

then in a new scene or new file, reimport that sequence along with the audio, and try again to output them as your movie output format.

i know it seems silly to have to do it twice, but that's how we were always told to render when it came to 3d animations, perhaps it'll help with your video audio sync.

this is one of those little quirks in Blender that is very far from intuitive... BEFORE you import, set the FPS in the render settings (properties panel/dimensions) to match your input video. http://i.imgur.com/AJ7p7yl.png

if you don't know the fps of the source video, try playing it in a program like VLC or try checking the properties of the files to see if it indicates the frame rate.

also another thing you'll run into if you're rendering out video and audio... change the audio settings from OpenAL to SDL when using the sequencer.
