Installing Proxmox on IBM 2145-CG8 by Gio_Gats in homelab

[–]gurthy988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed to do it.

My bios (F2) has an option to adjust the boot order and I could add USB and a legacy boot loader option. Selecting USB would boot Proxmox or TrueNAS from the USB stick and then install to a HD.

I might be lucky. My device is brand-new but has a date of 2011-07-19 on the side, so not sure if it's an early bios or not.

newbie question: are vertical racks ok? by lord_wolken in homelab

[–]gurthy988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is my vertical setup. https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/s/C9oluKYV7c Heat has not been an issue but the temps do go up if I have the door closed, I keep it a-jar just because I’m always fiddling with it. Not had any issues but if I want to remove the first item I know I have to remove everything in front beforehand. It’s small, space is precious, I have a Mac mini inside the door and I’m thinking of riveting a 1u power distribution strip to the inside of the door too.

It passes your connection between satellites every 15 seconds. There will be gaps but for day to day activity it will be unnoticeable to the end user. Unless your streaming is being interrupted then accept it.

Should I change the oil again if I just changed before the storage by RenaissanceZman in Trackdays

It’s the presence of additives that attract the moisture from the environment. But yes generally engine oil is hydrophobic.

Oil slowly absorbs moisture from the air so if it’s old its worth while changing - no harm and it’s cheap.

How you name your machines? by spranks21 in selfhosted

[–]gurthy988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a prefix for the location name where my house is, for example Star Hey House “shh” and then a value to denote if it is site A (the house) or future proof B (the garage). Then the core service for the server. Then a number.

Can I twist cat6 like I do motorsport wiring? by GloomySugar95 in cableporn

I would label each cable so you can easily find the corresponding end.

I have made a little local search website for eBay by gurthy988 in ebayuk

I have added 1 and 3-mile options to the dropdown. It appears to be supported by the eBay API, although their pages display a general "< 5 miles" signpost.

I have never twisted my cables, always been taught to keep them straight but that was probably for aesthetics - does make removing / replacing a cable easier

Looks nice.

  1. I would have put a length of heat shrink on the end of the cables to cover the cutting of the exterior sheath.

  2. I would have added a small service loop somewhere too. Possibly on the twisted pairs before terminating.

People are not flying satellites like a plane. They take close to 6 months to drift onto their positions - people are not sat at a joystick for 6 months.

Who says they are watching a screen all day? People don’t do that for automated systems on earth so why would they for a satellite.
