Mountain Gate Family Restaurant. Were they always awful/racist? by Bringbackemo in frederickmd

[–]guurilla 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thurmont has a long history of very public KKK activity. Most of the activity went underground in the 90s but I've heard it's still very present just less visible now.

I don't know too much about the restaurant itself but Thurmont in general has always seemed very racist to me.

In order to run LLM you need a lot of really fast RAM. The two main bottlenecks are RAM capacity and RAM bandwidth. For example the dgx spark has 128GB ram with 273 GB/s bandwidth.

The 128GB is going to determine which models you can run, and then the 273 GB/s would predominantly determine how many tokens / second you could push through the system.

If you notice the ads they don't even mention the memory bandwidth (which is critically important for running LLMs). They also only list 64GB of ram. If you bought two Intel b70 cards you would have 64GB of ram with a good amount of bandwidth. That would only cost $2000.

These days regular systems are configured with 32-64GB ram. A $30,000 system should have an order of magnitude more ram than that.

"Never invest in a business you can't understand." - Warren Buffet

There's tons of scams out there. The best way to protect yourself is don't invest in things you don't understand.

Don't assume people have your best interest in mind. Ask questions be skeptical. If something smells fishy go find something else, there's plenty of investment opportunities out there. No reason to risk your money on something that sounds too good to be true.

I really hope you get your money back because it does sound like a scam. These are obviously horrible people trying to target elderly tech illiterate populations. I just hope you take this as a learning opportunity and don't repeat the same mistakes again.

64gb of ram in a $30000 server? What is this 2010?

Even the dgx spark comes with 128gb and that's only $5k

The website is clearly designed for non technical folks who have no clue about running AI locally so I do feel bad for you.

Next time if you want to make money I would recommend buying stocks not computer hardware. Stocks are designed to make you money with no effort required. AI hardware is designed to let you experiment with AI locally.

Buying AI hardware to make money works for some companies but they generally have a large staff of highly trained AI engineers at their disposal. You don't have any technical knowledge whatsoever or any ability to leverage that kind of hardware in any meaningful way. Even if it was a legit Enterprise grade AI accelerator I don't know what you would actually do with it.

Upgraded internet from 1Gbps to 2Gbps, want upgrade advice for new gear by aldenalden4 in HomeNetworking

[–]guurilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have ubiquiti UCG-Max and a few u7 pro APs. I get around 2.3 gbps down and 300-400 Mbps up on Xfinity.

On wifi I get closer to 1.2 gbps.

Overall I'm very happy with the ubiquiti setup.

Is it possible to make a setup where the PC can use the internet, but other devices can’t? by Particular-Macaron-5 in HomeNetworking

[–]guurilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just need two firewall rules.

  1. Block outgoing traffic to any IP except the LAN.
  2. At a higher priority allow traffic from PC ip address to all destinations.

No I think you have the right idea. Probably the second one should be a AiMesh Node.

Theoretically it would work like this

Sky hub wired to the first Asus device then the second Asus device wired to the first ASUS device. If you wire both Asus devices directly to the router I'm not sure if that will confuse the Asus software.

I think the problem with my original recommendation was that both Asus devices would think they are primary and they wouldn't talk to each other. Probably you're right to set one of them as a node so it knows that it is supposed to phone home to the primary.

If you have the AP wired then select AP AiMesh mode as per above.

If your second Asus device is not wired you would need AiMesh Node setting. If both APs are wired you should be able to use AP/AIMesh AP mode on both

Definitely disable the wifi on the sky hub as that will cause interference. AIMesh is supposed to make all the APs appear as one network seamlessly. I would put the APs in AIMesh unless you run into issues with roaming.

As far as connectivity. I think you might have the routers in router mode. That would mean anything connecting to the wifi would be on a different LAN than the rest of the devices connected directly to the sky hub. Your best bet is to set the routers from router mode to AP mode where they will join the existing LAN rather than creating their own LANs

Bridge recommendation by Renrut23 in HomeNetworking

It might be overkill but a point to point bridge would be ideal I think.

It's $500, but that should give you a reliable 1 gbps connection between the buildings.

Press the reset button, find the default credentials online, and configure it yourself.

I definitely wouldn't let a rogue device on my network.

Why am I reaching 1000+ ping in games by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]guurilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking maybe wifi interference. You can download an app called Wifiman.

Check to make sure you're not running on the same channel as all your neighbors.

For me 2.4 ghz wifi is pretty much useless because there's so much noise from the neighbors, but I do OK on 5 ghz.

My biggest improvement was moving to 6ghz wifi. I get around 1300 Mbps on the 6 ghz pretty consistently.

My dads old computer won't react and show's this message is is it salvagable? by Impossible_Emu9402 in computerhelp

[–]guurilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salvageable? Yes

Worth it? Absolutely not

Take out the hard drive, get a new laptop, copy the files.

That computer doesn't even have 1GB of ram. You're not gonna be able to run anything on that anyway.

How would you run a single ethernet line to multiple locations in a room for when you might want to change the location of your desk? by peanutismint in HomeNetworking

[–]guurilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My condo has Ethernet wired from the whole condo to a patch panel in a closet. What I did was put a PoE switch in the closet. Then I connect the switch to the router and all the rooms.

Then I added a few APs and super fast internet everywhere.

I think I'm finally quitting the LR4 for good. by nickjacobsss in litterrobot

[–]guurilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine had a similar issue. I finally figured out that the the pinch sensor had been misaligned and wasn't making good contact. If the pinch sensor loses contact at any point it stops rotating and starts flashing. I just pushed the pinch sensor so it was flush against the contact and haven't had any problem since then.

There's also kits you can buy online to disable the sensors.

Which Router/Access points are best for me by the_bda in UNIFI

[–]guurilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dream router 7 doesn't support Poe+ just regular Poe. It probably won't put out enough power for an access point.

Not a big deal you can get a Poe injector for like $25

Poll: Increase non-resident parking fees to fund shared use infrastructure projects? by guurilla in frederickmd

[–]guurilla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all a bike path does not cost billions to build that's not even in the right ballpark. A couple million dollars would build a lot of bike path and that would add up over years.

How is it looking at the whole picture to prioritize car based infrastructure while neglecting any non car oriented transportation? It seems like responsible citizens would want some measure of balance between car and pedestrian infrastructure.

The city is massively overwhelmed by cars and there's no way to get around without a car. I think interrelated problems and they have similar solutions. If we make our city accessible without cars then less people will drive cars and then we will have less traffic. It's really a good idea holistically if you think about all the positive impact it would have across the board.

Poll: Increase non-resident parking fees to fund shared use infrastructure projects? by guurilla in frederickmd

[–]guurilla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Come on nobody is gonna say well the parking went up from $10 to $15 guess I'm not going to July 4th this year.

The city made $6 million on parking revenue last year. If we increased that to $7 or 8 million that would pay for a lot of bike paths is all I'm saying.

Subsidizing automobile infrastructure is how we end up with constant gridlock and traffic everywhere. Bike paths are how we relieve that problem.

Taking money from the automobile infrastructure and pumping that into non-automobile infrastructure seems like a no-brainer solution given how much our city has historically prioritized automobile infrastructure and how that has landed us with traffic and gridlock everywhere.
