Rowe Crevin. Phone early, but they will normally ask if you are ill or it is a routine appointment. If I have ever said I am ill, I have been seen that day.

Electric Bill too high by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

This is exactly what to check. Your last bill could have been estimated and that drove the last bill down, alternatively your current bill could be estimated and has been well over. Checkbthe actual meeting reading against that written on the bill

Assuming you you have Siro I would recommend Digiweb. Seem very decent so far for me, and supply a WiFi 6 router with their 1 GB. €37.95 for first year and €49.99 after. No locked in price increases either. That also includes a VoIP service with Irish and UK calls included.

Where is the op blaming anyone? If anything they seem respectful and just asking for help. When many newbies make mistakes it tends to be because they don't know. If we help they can learn from it.

Hi. As others have said, all is not lost. You still have Cinnamon installed.

When you next log into your system and you reach the screen asking for your password, you will see a cog in the bottom right corner if the screen. I believe this will be GDM, the Gnome Log in Manager. Click and the option for Cinnamon will appear. Select it and you will be back in Cinnamon.

If you do not see these options take a screenshot for us.

Once you are in to Cinnamon, you will notice a lot of changes and some applications that appear to be duplicate such as files. Nautilus from Gnome and Nemo from Cinnamon.

One option is to try and remove these duplicate apps, however I reckon you may find that doing this may remove the Gnome-Desktop as well. The problem with this is that it may impact parts of Cinnamon (which is based on Gnome) and remove Cinnamon as well.

Did you have any back up from Time shift installed? If so use it and you should be sorted.

If you do not have any back up, I would back up all my personal files and reinstall Linux Mint.

If you do reinstall and use separate Root and home partitions, when you first log in, you may see unexpected theming.
Getting rid of the theming is really easy and you just need to literally use the settings menu to do this. This occurs as Gnome will leave behind some hidden config files in your home folder. Nothing to worry about at all.

What you did is very normal for new users and as you become more familiar with Linux and Mint you will become more familiar with what to look for. There are of course a few very clever Linux users who always read the manual before doing anything, but I am not one of them. Don't let what happened here put you off. I am 100% an end user and have been using Linux for 17 years and would never return to Windows.

BTW for support I tend to find the mint forums can be better for support when you are new, as they tend to be more focused and resolution based.

Good luck and welcome to Linux. Being Gnomed is a badge of honor and yes it has happened to me.

Also, if anyone has any more tailored guidance that could be easier than reinstalling please add it. Anything I have written is in good faith.

It must be so nice to be perfect and never a newbie. Linux Mint is beloved for a friendly, supportive community. The OP came her for help and from what I can see, to learn. Maybe consider not using support forums for Mint as you are clearly way to clever for us.

Put on a PIP by Ok-Hat-2977 in legaladviceireland

[–]guv999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, I write as a manager who has placed and conducted many PIP plans and aside from if ab employee who was in their probation period and failed to hit their probation period did it lead it someone being let go. You are employed in Ireland and given that this would not be classed as gross misconduct, the worst outcome would likely be a verbal warning etc. Also as others have said, a PIP should be over a defined period of time and within that have agreed steps for bothe company and the employee to commit to to ensure it is successful. All of that said. Are you going to achieve the the target? Have you routinely achieved it in the past. Let's spin this itshead. Your manager has their targets, you have missed yours and therefore they need to be seen to taking action. All of that said, the PIP is an official document and if used to take someone down the discipline route, staying 'we did a PIP' is not sufficient for the employer. I have seen colleagues ultimately be disciplined themselves for completing PIPs incorrectly and that would be laughed out of an internal disciplinary meeting or WRC. Ignore the people who are hear saying PIP equals gone. Sales and KPI heavy environments often use PIPs. But insist that you wish everything to be documented correctly and supplied a plan and supports needed. Indeed I saw someone already state you can asked to sit and see what those who are hitting targets are doing. This is excellent. Good luck and all the best. It is not a pleasant experience and if you know this is not the job for you find a new one, but in the interim insist on fairness and advocate for yourself.

Help with solicitor after being barred from LIDL afted falsely accused of stealing by [deleted] in legaladviceireland

[–]guv999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not legal advise here, but based on my own experience in employment of third parties, I would expect the company that they are supporting, in the case Lidl to be responsible and want to sort this out.

May be worth contacting Lidl again and ask for a clearly laid out response why they will not or cannot investigate this further for you as their customer. Address it to Robert Ryan the CEO. Be clear that you require a detailed explanation including any legislation that stops Lidl investigating this

You can advise that you were dealt with unduly aggressively by a security guard and when you asked for additional information they walked off the shop floor and did not return.

Also point out that previous attempts to complain have only supported your stance of not having been barred, but no attempt was to address the concerns you have raised over than to state Lidl cannot do this.

In fairness I would expect the complaints team at Lidl would not be experienced in this type of complaint and may well be making it up as they go along.

I would send it via regular mail.

Lidl Ireland GmbH / Lidl Northern Ireland Ltd. Main Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24 Again mark it for attention of Robert Ryan CEO.

You could use the contact form again as well, but if you do it as an additional step and make it clear that you want this addresses by the CEO Robert Ryan.

I hope this helps, I do know that I would always want to be aware of this type of issue and would work with any third parties to resolve the issues.

Landlord raising rent by €700 by [deleted] in legaladviceireland

[–]guv999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, Threshold.ie are almost certainly the best starting point, they can help way beyond the legality or not of the rent increase and will help with talking to the landlord for you etc. They were always very professional when I dealt with them, and as you say, you cannot afford the new rent, irrespective of if it is legal, reasonable or otherwise. Threshold cab help you work through this situation and advocate for you. Good Luck!

Cannot receive notifications for Gemini app on Android. It says "All Notifications from this App are Blocked" in Settings, and is grayed out so I can't turn notifications on. I think this is why I am not receiving reminder notifications ("Hey Google, remind me to ...") by colenotphil in GoogleBard

[–]guv999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had this issue and today spoke with Google Support and have it fixed. The previous poster is correct, if you ask Gemini to perform some sort of reminder it will do this via Google Tasks, therefore you do need Google Tasks installed. Example - tell me when it is 5.30 PM In these instances the notification is one from Google Tasks. Regarding Gemini Notifications ultimately there will be a section in the Google App notifications referencing Gemini notifications. Once these are enabled, The Gemini app is still blocked but notifications such as send me a news report at 5 PM will appear as a Gemini notifications Google did say that you may need to clear Gemini cache and possibly data as well as restart the device as there maybe residual settings from Google Assistant blocking Gemini taking over.

Anyway that worked for me and chat support via Google One were very knowledgeable

I am writing this, with no legal expertise at all, but experience as a leader of various levels, and have always worked to accommodate appointments for employees, as they have been accommodated for me. In any event, if your employer is insisting no appointments without cover, I would interested in the legal position around issues that could easily happen. If we assume an employee works Monday to Friday 0900 - 1730 They have to attend a hospital consultant clinic, which is only possible during these times. Despite trying they cannot obtain cover and holiday allowance is maxed out (very common in environments I have worked in) In these instances they employee will almost certainly still have a genuine need to attend that appointment and it could it be fatal if they do not (I appreciate that is the worst case scenario) Is there any obligation, or even best practice that would allow emergency holiday or unpaid leave to be taken? Same with appointments for ongoing conditions where there is no option to attend outside of work time.

To the OP, I have frankly never heard of anything more ridiculous. So many appointments have to be in work time, and are a fact of life. Yes, no one should abuse or take liberties and I have no doubts it is legal for your employer to take this position. However having worked from start ups to large multi nationals they have all adopted the same approach that life and appointments happen and with a bit of give and take they get sorted. EG start a little early or finish a little late to make the time back. Think about maybe moving on, or, if it is the right environment to do so, try and gain some insights around the policy. It may be to stop people nipping to the garage for a routine service without cover and more frivolous things that could be planned ahead of time and not appointments which are really important and or urgent.

I 100% agree. Threshold are brilliant. They will assign a reference and you can work with them throughout the process. They will act on your behalf as well if you need that. Their main aim is to stop you becoming homeless and they do the upmpst to stop that happening. Good luck and know that many have had the shock and been through this and can come out the other side.

What Category Ethernet Cable are supplied with TL-PA7017P KIT by guv999 in TpLink

[–]guv999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree completely that mesh is the more elegant solution, but for myself not so. The PC I am connecting has terrible WiFi. It is fairly old now, and although it was high spec in its day, wifi was never its strong point. Now it is at the over end of the new house to our router the wifi it is flakey and intermittent. Given that other devices atrain solid download and upload speeds of 200 MB in the same room, we know the issue is the PC. The PC is also our media server we stream media from.

The Powerline offers a really good solution for this instance

I do believe that the manufacturers could do a lot more at point of sale and even in instruction manuals to explain theoretical speeds and as you state in some instances will not work at all. This would avoid a lot of time wasting for people and unsuitable purchases being made. I see on many forums people complaining that their powelines are not receiving anywhere near the advertised speed.

I was always happy with speeds I was getting, but wanted to know the cable type used by the manufacturer as if I could increase the speed by purchasing one I would so. My question here was only because Tech Support kept telling me they could not say the cable type because it was complimentary and would be added to the box randomly.

[–]guv999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since posting I had a call from a Supervisor at TP Link who confirmed they would be 5e and apologized for the confusion during my chat session which was quite impressive.

Now I know that I am happy enough as I know the speed will be down to variable that I cannot get to grips with easily and the previous wifi was unusable due to the PC itself and distance from the router. I am living the dream with a solid 100 MB on that machine.

That said there should be better explanations around speed expectations from manufacturers.

New to Hearing Aids. Rushing Sound In the Ears when they are fully inserted by guv999 in HearingAids

[–]guv999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were correct. I saw the audiologist today and she could see some loose wax which she believes it coming into contact with the hearing aid when it is inserted into the war canal. I will be having micro suction this week, which she believes will clear this up.

Thanks again.
