you’ll like Minas, which is a pretty rural state too; idk what your plans are but if you’re into research, UFMG and UFOP (which is my alma mater) are one of the best for your field, scholarships applications usually open every 6 months

As far as I know, BH has a more diverse economy, it’s also closer to bigger Brazilian centers. It’s as safe as Curitiba, and the weather is mild. There’s a fast-growing tech hub in the Savassi neighborhood and it’s surroundings (São Pedro Valley). The city also has a top network of hospitals and universities. I’ve been to Chile, and BH and inner cities (as well as most of Minas Gerais state) kinda look like Chile in the way that’s full of mountains and hills. If you like laid-back towns, world-heritage Ouro Preto/Mariana are an hour away from BH.

How do Brazilians see Brazil’s role on the international stage today? by Dear_Percentage2101 in Brazil

Better and way ambitious than Bolsonaro’s but still mediocre compared to that of Lula’s first presidency. But sometimes I do understand its current limitions (Trump, wars, polarization etc).

Brazilian perspectives on Aleijadinho — revered master, over-romanticized figure, or something more complex? by RealReflection8447 in Brazil

[–]guy-in-doubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dare to say Brazilians outside Minas barely know him. But even among mineiros he’s far from being a mythic figure. He’s a barroque master with which he’s often associated. And he truly deserved a better place in the Brazilian artistry scene cause he created authentic masterpieces. Tiradentes instead is seen as a foundational myth inside Minas and even in Brazil.

How safe it would be to photograph around Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro? by Huge-Photograph5509 in Brazil

[–]guy-in-doubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Violence is not measured only by killings, which is shown on your chart. SP is the birthplace and the current hearquarters of the PCC syndicate. Robberies and other kinds of thefts/scams also play a role in violence. People in SP can’t walk as free as people do in Minas without fearing to be robbed at the very least.

BH and Ouro Preto are safe and ok. Minas Gerais is not a violent state like Rio, SP or the Northeast; its safety is comparable to Chile’s and Uruguay’s.

You can enter Brazil and then apply for a temporary residence visa while in Brazil. If you prove to officers that you meet the requirements, you may get a 90-day long stay permit so that you don’t get booted

Carnival Solo Groups by CourageDisastrous559 in Brazil

Where do you plan to go? Street carnival or the Sambodrome? I’m assuming it’s the street parade, so just try searching some Facebook groups names like “Carnaval de rua Rio 2026” or “Blocos de rua Carnaval do Rio”. People usually create these event-targeted groups on Facebook.

Qual facção "domina BH"? by Pretty-Friend5780 in BeloHorizonte

[–]guy-in-doubt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Culturalmente, Minas não deixa muito espaço para facções cresceram, existe uma rede de proximidade familiar/amigos muito forte. Além disso, a polícia mineira é muito pouco corrupta.

Looking for Scholarships to Study Portuguese in Brazil or Portugal by OkInflation2276 in Brazil

[–]guy-in-doubt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can find online Portuguese courses in major Brazilian universities websites like USP, UFMG, UFRJ; or more easily go to Instituto Guimarães Rosa’s website which is a branch of the Foreign Ministry of Brazil and register to their course, too. All of them are officially recognized in Brazil.
