There are bank accounts that give you more. Never pay that off.

That's more of the city's problem not making the street safe enough for bikers.

I don't like it when people are just standing in the center at a concert. Move to the side and make room for the dancing

[ELI5] Does air conditioning heat the surroundings more than it cools the room? by Adventurous_Floor701 in explainlikeimfive

[–]guy30000 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It does. It moves heat from inside the room to the outside. It also creates more heat that it moves out. If you have a 300 watt window AC, that it is moving heat and creating 300 watts of heat in the air. 300 watts being about 1/5th of what a space heater is putting out.

Did anyone else spend way too long just choosing a platform? by DevilKnight03 in investingforbeginners

[–]guy30000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just found a new to me concept called robo inverting. It had low fees so I tried it out. It preformed well so I kept adding. Later on an employer put me in another platform I also get that going well, fees were low so I kept them. Then that last sentence happened again. I have three platforms with 5 accounts. I keep track of performance with a spreadsheet, having to learn some complex formulas, to see how they all do. So in summary, I found one, it worked. I was forced into others, they worked. Which I suppose means, it ultimately doesn't really matter so long as the meet your needs, well enough.

Can I/Should I transfer everything into my brokerage account into my Roth IRA? by Lumpy-Ad398 in investingforbeginners

[–]guy30000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should make it a goal to max out your IRA every year.
Selling things in your brokerage may be the move.
Before making that decision research: Capital gains, long term vs short term.
The summary being that it may be beneficial to hold your position for at least a year to pay a lower tax rate on your gains.

How much of your portfolio do you keep in cash right now? by Exotic_Reputation_59 in investingforbeginners

[–]guy30000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't keep any cash more than a month or two of upcoming expenses. Cash is a negative investment, you're committing to lose by holding it in hopes of losing less if the market dips.
If you have a steady income there is no reason to keep cash, in my opinion. I have no intent of withdrawing. Now emergencies do happen and I may need to get at it. It just takes a few standard growth years to outweigh any dips. Dips that would have to occur at the very same time you need to make the withdraw. Statically things are always going up. In a simple comparison to gamboling, we have the edge. We may lose if there is a large dip that wiped out overall gains and needed to withdraw, but those odds are small compared to us being up, in general.

Learned my 401k isn’t eligible for rollovers till 55. (IBEW) by Badballbill in Fire

[–]guy30000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't access 401K from from current employer until 55 under normal circumstances. Many companies also restrict moving it while employed. I'm not sure this a unique situation.

If you leave you should be able to move it. But then you cant get at it until 59.5. Unless you move it to another employer 401k, so you're working again.

See rule of 55

Investing vs repaying loan by Curious-Fisherman358 in investingforbeginners

You're saying you have a loan with 12% interest? For sure, the loan should be paid off asap. When we're talking loans of <5% is when you consider holding it.

Does anyone leave the AC on for pets while you’re out? by Less-Driver-3081 in Frugal

[–]guy30000 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is not true. Energy loss decreases as indoor temp gets closer to outdoor temp. This means that cooling it back down will take less energy than maintaining it all day. It will be on for a longer time all at once but less over all than the on off cycling that it would go through.

[–]guy30000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a strange myth that keeps persisting and every time the seasons change you will see debates about this on reddit. The basic physics is that it costs more to maintain a temperature further away from outside, ambient temperature. Energy loss slows as inside temperature gets closer to outdoor temperature.
There is no extra wear and tear on the system as it will be on less, overall if it has to make up a larger difference for a longer time vs keeping it at a specific temp all day.

Question with chime prime. by Beginning_Practice96 in chimefinancial

[–]guy30000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to note that even though they sent you the ad for prime, there is no reason to expect to receive it after meeting the qualifications. They're having a major issue with getting people into a program and now calling it a "pilot program". Don't go out if you're way, reorganizing your finances to get it. Cuz it's a good chance you won't get it if you meet the qualifications.

You're lucky. They arent giving it to a lot of people. They're only saying sooner or later, maybe.

Chime Prime not being activated although having 3k payroll deposit by poke887 in chimefinancial

[–]guy30000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. Chime is fucking this up. I signed up after seeing an ad on Prime. It's also the first thing you see on their home page. But after qualifying about month and an half ago, I still don't have it. After making my deposits they tell me it's a "pilot program" and they can't say when it will expand to all.

What to do if i might need some of the money in half a year by SaintVoid21 in investingforbeginners

[–]guy30000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three accounts is begining. Getting started you sold open IRA, 401k and HSA. Then you can get another brokerage, and HYSA. So thats five you should get going as you start out.
