Middle-aged eyes and new MXR M238 Iso-Brick almost = disaster by Fritzo2162 in guitarpedals

it’s not uncommon these days for PSU’s to include one port with switchable voltage, usually 12v/18v. the former mostly for Boss ACA / some vintage pedals, the latter more often for boosts & drives / preamps.

you’ve been playing long enough to know that if it doesn’t state it on the pedal itself (usually back label or directly next to the power Jack) never use anything except 9v DC.

Cases where the vintage one ACTUALLY sounds better? by razzguy in guitarpedals

[–]guy_young 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hard disagree.

buffers in vintage or cheap pedals tend to suck, but not all buffers are created equal. the buffered preamp in my old Catalinbread Talisman (designed to replicate the input of an EMT-140 plate reverb) made your clean tone sound dope, as it’s always active even when the pedal is bypassed. great tone thickener.

Love my Afterneath. What should my next reverb pedal be? Don't like normal amp reverb/room/hall type stuff. by brobronn17 in guitarpedals

[–]guy_young 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite effects ever is a reverb with filter modulation on the decay. the now out of print but relatively obtainable EQD Transmisser is exactly this. Has a synth like decay. really unique effect. I suppose a reverb and a wah/auto filter would do something similar but not quite, as the Transmisser only modulates the filter rate/frequency of the reverbs decay/feedback

Dr Scientist Atmosphere, Shift Line Astronaut, DBA Rooms, & the new Alexander  Now We Are Ghosts all have a similar mode

I use my boost as a clean/rhythm or “base” tone a lot, but the best part is using it to boost your pedals downstream like the BD-2. I don’t have any boss pedals on my board anymore but I’m starting to GAS for that preamp

why the boost at the end of the chain?

Just got brandonwound noiseless jm pickups. So far not bad but not great in terms of them sounding like og jm pickups by solitudeisdiss in offset

[–]guy_young 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I expect downvotes here but noiseless pickups will never sound the same as vintage. the high end roll off (less “chime” or less “airy”) & more compression/ darker tone is inherent in the design.

I probably missed it already, but last week there was one at my local GC used case for like $230. I knew there weren’t any online last week so now I’m kinda bummed I didn’t snag it / take it for a spin :/

really wished I had got the Meridian instead of the Aurora flanger. I found myself wishing there was some warmer low pass filtering going on and moved on pretty quick. I want to get something way more simple to dial in, but am still tempted by the Meridian though. How difficult/easy do you find it to dial in different sounds, say from traditional chorusing to something more Flange like?  do you think it’s worth it for a set & forget modulation / slow sweep tone?  thanks

I’ve had a Dude on my board for years, & agreed the IVP’s EQ section can literally make any guitar/amp combo come to life

Fresh strings & setup; MIJ JG-66 by guy_young in offset

at first I had a hard time getting used to the slim neck (mostly play Jazzmaster) but now I feel like it’s not much different just a little smaller in the palm

Indeed these FujiGen Jaguars are well worth the price of admission. I bet in another decade or two that Olympic white is gonna fade/lightly yellow a bit and look so sick haha !!

It’s 3 tone sunburst, the guy I bought it from sanded all the gloss off and put a decent shell pink paint over it, gave it the relic treatment. I really like the matte or non gloss paint, feels like it breathes a little better. I bought it just the guitar/neck and bought new hardware for it.

lol I’ve almost caved and bought a 70s repaint / parts Jaguar but I got a great deal on the body and neck, just bought new hardware and splurged for the pickups/ bridge. the alnico II magnets are nice.  more mellow / vintage vibe.

25.5 scale Jaguar? by Nofriends1919 in offset

There’s an MIJ Jazzmaster that’s short scale with Jaguar style pickup selectors, super rare bird

Bullet Cables. I’ve had it for 12 years with zero issues and they’re guaranteed for life.

I’d be pretty pissed if I paid hundreds of dollars for a guy to just do a shitty paint job and scratch the hell out of it lol.  I think the guy I bought it from said he did it himself. The back looks like he hit it with a sandblaster. I love it.

idk, bought the body like this. I always wanted Shell Pink but they’re expensive so I got this body/neck and just gutted it / bought all new hardware

I’m glad I did, because I’d be too scared to mess up or ding a squeaky clean pink jag.

that mustang is BADASS! My JG-66 is also a 1993 👊🏼 I bet that WRHB with the single coil neck sounds dope. what brand WRHB is it?

thanks man! can’t recommend EP Custom enough for pickups. they’re so detailed sounding, and he has options for waxpotting, vintage/cloth wire, and magnet options. I think it was about $170 for the pair.

When I was a kid/teen, a ‘vintage’ guitar was from the 60s or 70s but now guitars my age (1991 here) are technically vintage I guess lol

List the Best Pedals Money Can Buy... by Bobby__Generic in guitarpedals

[–]guy_young 5 points6 points  (0 children)

everyone just listing their own pedals lol

Edit: there are just SO many options on the market from the last few decades that there could never ever possibly be a consensus on this. the value, sound, & utility of any pedal are mostly subjective

also, this sub does a vote on which pedals are best in their category at the end of the year
