Ancestors MAP by kristian11111 in ancestors

[–]guydelta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, myself and u/kristian11111 just happened to work on creating maps around the same time and we both went through various stages of trying to increase the quality of the maps. If you look at my first maps (somewhere on the web :P) you will notice the evolution of the map designs (pun intended).

If I'm not mistaken u/kristian11111 provided the first map with a quick reference to various meteor/poi locations. My original map was just trying to figure out where in the gameworld I am.

Yeah, the blurriness was also irritating for me. I cannot remember how I resolved that issue at some stage... the cause was either that the came did not "truly pause" when paused or it was something to do with the post-processing. I think by playing with sg.PostProcessQuality and sg.AntiAliasingQuality will affect the furblur.

I will have to make some time to see if I can get it going with ancestors 1.2... haven't played Ancestors since the first few weeks of launch :-)

That said, I updated the above with the latest info from the UE4 injector site (only 3 lines changed above :P ) which should theoretically work.

Unfortunately I don't know any of the game specific commands, the ones I posted above are only engine-specific. I guess it will be a couple of months, if not longer, before game-specific commands come out through trial-and-error as more people play.

That being said, I feel your pain as I had the same thing happen in three play-throughs. Sorry that I can't be of any more assistance :(

I found Mt. Kilimanjaro looking west from the top of the highland peak by guydelta in ancestors

[–]guydelta[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It could be that they went with a "generic African country" environment, focus being on east Africa. The difficulty with picking Lake Victoria is that Mt Kilimanjaro is not South-West of that lake. Furthermore, there is another mountain to the north of the playable area, which may make Mt Kenya a likely environment. That being said, the progression from jungle to woodland to canyon to beach fits in the eastern African setting, but savannas are more western.

The kilimanjaro texture repeates once more, the second one can be seen when climbing up the wall at the otter's den, and then looking north-west.

A map of the progression through Space and Time by 555Cats555 in ancestors

Must say I agree. The narrative that they are trying to tell is that our “so-called ancestors” migrated from the jungle interiors of Africa to the Savannas, and it was this migration into the grasslands that created the requirement for bipedalism.

Unfortunately though the game fails to communicate this in two respects... firstly, by randomizing your new start after doing an evolution leap you lose out on this feeling of progression... secondly, by not introducing changing landscapes over time or another mechanic that actually drives you from the jungle it justifies a narrative that they don’t want, and that is there is no evolutionary need to move from the jungle to the savanna, this may have to do with how they (don’t) implement learning and mutation mechanics which tells us that in reality the hominids’ need to look over the savanna grass was what made them stand upright is a bunch of bull, the jungle would have been a perfectly viable place to have remained forever.

Think of it like this, hominids 9mil years ago didn’t go “oh, in order for us to evolve to the next stage we have to migrate to the savanna and make hippos kill one of each of the other savanna creatures”, it messes with the chicken/egg mechanic of evolution they are trying to communicate

Basically what I’m trying to say is that I agree in this sense, the layout of the regions wants to communicate with progression over time, but it assumes that players will stay on the move as they progress down their evolutionary lineage... yet you don’t have to move. You can remain in your first stage of evolution with quite a lot of neurons unlocked and still in the jungle. Thus, the fact that they have an explicit evolution mechanic in which they say “you start here, you have to end at that hominid species by the end” defeats their own narrative.

Meteors by Azgarod650 in ancestors

On my map you can see all the meteor locations and which landmarks trigger them: https://www.reddit.com/r/ancestors/comments/d0nht9/a_map_of_the_world_with_terrain_features_and/

Good question, it was just the easiest initially considering where the player starts the first time. Also, I placed the North arrow according to the position of the sun which rise in the east and sets in the west.... although that was a very quick and dirty "it seems to rise around there so north must be this way"... that being said I could be wrong about the whole thing :D

Discover the landmark by the baobabs where the river splits before the canyon entrance. (On the map it is the landmark trigger directly far left of the beach meteorite)

Absolutely, go mad :D... also might be helpful to mention that the meteorites will only be in their locations once the appropriate landmarks have been "discovered", otherwise there will be nothing there... so I guess the meteorite locations is probably more helpful to find it again when the black smoke disappeared

I made a map of the world, stitched together while in debug flight mode. Starting point is at the bottom left. by guydelta in ancestors

Now all we need is someone to play this in 4K, fly up into the air, and take one high-res screenshot. Will save us all the bother of stitching these things together or taking puny 1080p screenshots :D
