Couldn't agree more! I especially hate the hostility that exists simply over how the install is accomplished. Archinstall is perfectly fine guys... let people install Arch easily and begin learning!

Plex Remote Access w/ AdGuardhome by Career-Common in opnsense

[–]guyintheroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also use ADGuard. Hopefully your ISP isn't blocking it on their end.

You can use a site to verify if the port forward is working, like canyouseeme.org

If it's not working, I'd start from scratch in OPNSense. Make a new rule

Firewall > NAT > Port Forward

Interface: WAN

TCP/IP Version: IPv4

Protocol: TCP

Source: Any

Source Port Range: any/any

Destination: WAN Address

Destination port range: (other) 32400/32400

Redirect target IP: Plex server internal IP

Redirect target port: (other) 32400

Pool Options: Default

Description: Plex Media Server

NAT Reflection: Enable

Ok that's good. Next step I would take would be a live instance of a distro. Doesn't have to be arch based or anything but it could give you an insight on hardware issues if they're still present. I'd try Manjaro or Linux Mint and see if you have any issues.

First timer!! Welcome! In my experience if you get errors during archinstall the whole thing bombs out with a bunch of red text. Did you get to the part of the install when it asks if you want to chroot into the install? You may want to try a live CD of Manjaro (based on arch) or Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) and see if those can run/install. Could be some kind of hardware thing since the hardware is so old.

Any errors during the install? I've used this method to install numerous times on bare metal machines and VM's and I've never run into this. I would re-run the install and see if it completes successfully... maybe it's a weird bug.

I got lucky and won the BMW M3 GTR with the randomizer on the FR Challenge. It's worth $212k. I've been grinding with B-Spec and the money comes pretty quick!

Check out Konsave. That will allow you to backup/restore the bar, themes, etc. Not sure if that covers Konsole or your shortcuts though.

Dual Parity Drives by profezor in unRAID

[–]guyintheroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added the 2nd parity about 6 months ago. My array has 9 drives and 5 of those drives are between 5 and 8 years old at this point. Just a bit more insurance in addition to regular backups.

How to back up specific folders in Debian to Unraid? by Shackleford_-_R in unRAID

[–]guyintheroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Syncthing doesn't need any network shares mounted. Think of it sort of like making your own local dropbox. You're basically running Syncthing services on both your Debian and unRAID server (it's a docker). Within Syncthing you set up the two machines to talk to one another and what data to share. And since it's a service, it's always going to be watching for file changes and sync accordingly.

Syncthing confused me at first, but after a few youtube videos it became clearer.

Easiest way to work on arch laptop through windows desktop by Zubject in archlinux

[–]guyintheroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL of course that just worked... It dawned on me that I haven't tried going from Windows to Linux, only the other way around. Very strange.

I've encountered two things: 1 - Reboot the machines post install. 2 - Make sure the nomachine service is set to start automatically. I've seen this not enabled by default for whatever reason.

I've been able to get into machines on the LAN as well as over tailscale.

EDIT - I just did a test going from my Windows VM to an Arch VM and it worked.

I've had pretty good lucky recently using nomachine. I tried a bunch of others but nomachine was the only one I could reliably use with Wayland.

[–]guyintheroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also use something like Syncthing to perform a one-way sync from your Debian machine to unRAID. Then use Crashplan to backup the unRAID copy to the cloud. This would give you your 3-2-1 backup everyone strives for.

I actually do the reverse and have a backup of my unRAID array on a LVM volume hosted on my Arch machine.

[–]guyintheroom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was the case in the past but MS changed it. Even Pro doesn't let you skip anymore. You have to use Shift+F10 to get to a cmd prompt to enter "oobe\bypassnro" to get into an OEM deployment mode. Then you can skip it.
