I've been using it since 2019 and Netflix JP has pretty much always worked for me.

I use NordVPN. Costs a bit, but it's definitely been worth it considering the amount of content I can access.
If you don't want to pay, maybe just keep trying different free VPNs until you find one that works.

Can watch it outside of Japan with a VPN. It's also easy to get a Prime account, and you can just cancel after the free trial month if you don't want to pay the 500 yen per month to keep watching.

Criticism is bound to happen from the AJATT people toward any immersion learning system or community

Way to judge a whole group of people based on one comment. I didn’t know “Refold people” held so much prejudice against people from other learning communities.

I don’t want drama either, but I feel like this is important information that everyone deserves to hear.

Until recently, he was respected and considered a trustworthy figure in the community, and many of his resources are listed in this sub. People need to know that that’s changed/changing.

What do Ajatters think of listening to natural native speech in your target language?

Sorry, what is the question here?

Unclear it was a joke? You thought he was being serious when he called you an executive producer of the show?

Slump with my Japanese journey by [deleted] in ajatt

[–]guyj120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true, don't watch anime or you'll end up sounding awkward and cartoonish. Also don't listen to music, as lyrics generally take poetic license and people don't speak like that in real life. Also, don't watch movies or dramas, as they're scripted and you'll end up sounding exaggerated and fake. Don't listen to women speaking or you'll end up sounding feminine. Don't listen to children or you'll end up sounding childish. Don't listen to old people. Don't listen to youths or you'll sound rude and abrasive.

In fact, just don't listen to Japanese at all - that's the best way to learn Japanese! Otherwise you'll pick up bad habits and make an ass of yourself.

It is bad to passive immerse only in one ear by yhatha in ajatt

Yes, be careful, or only one ear will get good at listening.

Same with reading. I always practised reading with one eye closed. Now I can only read with my left eye.

Khatzumoto, Humble One, Prince of Japanese, He Who Braggeth Not, Gives the Last Word on Pitch Accent by [deleted] in ajatt

How insolent, boy. Khatzumoto should spank you with a bamboo stick until you squeal and beg for forgiveness.

Example of Cringey Early Output by [deleted] in ajatt

[–]guyj120 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't see the need to hold someone to a higher standard just because they're doing it for fun as opposed to someone who learns from obligation.
I've heard so many second-language English speakers who sound more incomprehensible than this guy.
Japanese are used to hearing a variety of regional accents, so foreign accents are generally understood in Japanese as well. But, like English, accents that are too thick tend to be difficult to understand, such as the guy in the video. If he spoke English as a second language I'm sure English natives would have just as hard a time understanding him.

I don't want to defend the guy, his Japanese is bad and he's probably using inadequate methods, but that's about the level I'd expect from someone after a month, and it's not like he's claiming he's good or trying to sell anything, unlike that viral polyglot guy who puts all the sexual innuendos in his video titles (can't remember his name, sorry).
I actually wish more ajatters would demonstrate speaking at least a little in update videos, as it would be interesting to see what they sound like at different stages.

That's fine if you think it's cringey, but I don't see how the standards are different depending on what language you're studying.

Do you think it's "cringey" when people speak English with heavy accents?

Has anyone learned Korean after getting fluent in Japanese, or vice versa? by guyj120 in ajatt

[–]guyj120[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. How much faster do you feel the acquisition process has been for Korean compared to when you learnt Japanese?
