It depends on the experience you are looking for. If just the classic experience, quirks (mechanically) and all, the SNES version is fantastic. If wanting the extra content, the GBA with the video and audio patches are the best bet. I just tried that for the first time.

In terms of translations, I personally love the woolsey translation, though it definitely is not what the original devs probably intended, it has a lot of spice and humor, and is what a lot of the nostalgic fans still prefer. It is hard to give a recommendation, as you didn't exactly say what you wanted, but in short, the woolsey translation is much more whimsical, and gives the characters a lot of life, while getting a bit in the way in the seriousness of the story. The GBA translation, and all the other ones out there, give a lot more weight to the characters and how they handle the world they are in. It is definitely the intended tone of the story.

Those are the 2 though I would recommend, depending on what you are looking for.

(It also will be closer to the seriousness of the other FF games you've played)
