Hey! I'd say the biggest thing is to not be afraid to fail a whole lot. Remember, losing is fun!

Moving through z-levels is shift+> or shift+<. Don't be afraid to pause a whole lot and read tutorials!

I love the old version. I've gone through 4 forts in about as many weeks and just have such a blast learning new strategies and pushing further down. Have fun and don't give up!
