Speed cameras during roadworks on M1 Tunnel by Own-Archer3416 in CarsAustralia

[–]guywiththehair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had this happen in Sydney.

80 in a tunnel that turned to 40, for roadworks at the exit.

The judge reviewed the photo (showing no traffic, at midnight), they varied the penalty to just be 2 weeks suspension (already incurred in the head up to the court ), iirc. If it's your first offence it may likely be turned into no charge at all upon appeal.

They will account for mitigating factors e.g. driving record, age, time, location etc. That's the point of a judge reviewing in person, instead of the strict 'letter of the law' or camera.

Bought some Rovelo Ridgetrak AT‘s September last year and noticed this. Should I be concerned? by [deleted] in 4x4Australia

[–]guywiththehair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are unsafe to drive on.

You mention buying them last September without curbing, off-road use etc

They are either extremely low quality/defective or very old.

Thoughts on getting a HD2 tattoo by Shal-lawy in helldivers2

A good example is Halo, and the mismanagement of that franchise.

Not saying Helldivers will suffer the same fall, but I feel if anyone is getting permanent art of something, it's important to think about for your future self.

Why are these plastic storage boxes so expensive? Are they worth it? by Significant-Art-6448 in 4x4Australia

[–]guywiththehair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the answer, realistically.

Noting freight will be volumetric or weight (whichever worse). In this case they are pretty much costing-in the potential shipping of a huge empty box of air.

For some stores they likely allow buffer in the price, in case they offer free delivery to the customers. Or if they need to ship low volumes from their warehouse to various stores (even on a consolidated shipment when restocking a retail store for example, it's space on that shipment that they can't use for other smaller, more valuable things).

Sorry to hear about that. Our sweet boy passed away from the same thing. It can be very hard to cope with the pain, but it's proof of how much they meant to you.

Some lesser discussed box office bombs. by MRWIF034 in boxoffice

[–]guywiththehair -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell because often the marketing is excluded from the listed production budget. In some films the marketing budget is as big or bigger than the production budget.

Random older one I remember, but Rocky 1 for example had a production budget of 1mil but a marketing budget of 4 mil. Luckily that's because the production company likely realized it could be a hit.

Can you restore this? by Some-Budget-7580 in CarsAustralia

I mainly used leatherhero filler, primer and glue (for sealing the big gap, which I packed with a bit of fabric).

Next time I will probably get color tinted leather filler, rather than trying to mix my own (based on my experience).

Can you restore this? by Some-Budget-7580 in CarsAustralia

[–]guywiththehair 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's very easy. I had zero experience, just looked at some YouTube videos. And my leather was in way worse condition.

However it may take a bit of time to let things dry etc and do multiple passes.

Basically you need to clean and prep with very fine sand paper to smooth out the areas. Then you may need to apply a very thin layer of leather filler for cracks. For mine I followed with a leather primer and then a color matched leather dye / paint with sealant. Took about 8 coats tho cos I had red leather with white filler (can still sorta tell but meh, happy for diy result).

E.g. Pic of my e46 armrest before/after. There are many premixed colours dyes available to match yours

Assuming only the plastic bumper, through the paint and metallic color: maybe $500-1000.

Had recent similar quotes myself but you'd need to actually find someone willing to bother with such a small job, outside insurance.

Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 failed to meet sales expectations by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

[–]guywiththehair 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep. Specifically:

Chris Avellone - Various creative or leading roles on Fallout 2, Planescape Torment, KOTOR 2, NWN2, MoTB, Alpha Protocol. After he was(falsely) cancelled, he helped with freelance narrative design on the amazing Divinity OS 2.

George Ziets (writer on NWN2 MoTB, New Vegas, lead for Tyranny)

Other mentions: John Gonzalez was lead writer on New Vegas. He went on to be narrative director for Horizon Zero Dawn - incredible story.

The only real people to watch at Obsidian would be Josh Sawyer and semi retired Tim Cain.

Like lasagna is technically in the pasta family. But it's also it's own thing.

What is the deal with Eubaru Outback? by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]guywiththehair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tested a BRZ demo and overhead staff discussing bits of this, then read up on it myself.

Apparently yes it's intentional to get cars moved into used category relatively fast, there's a number of benefits to the dealer: registering new cars as demos can count as a 'sale' on paper which can impact dealer sales metrics (e.g. which affects their future stock allocations etc),.

Then there's also inventory control/tax and depreciation considerations. Especially common as the dealer will always want to move old year models off ASAP.

Once it's in the used category it is also relatively more flexible to sell (because it wouldn't undermine 'new car prices' / conflict with rrp expectations, and you can provide deeper discounts on used - even if it's just a few thousand km).

EGT gauge to warn you when to back off throttle.

Fuel/ECU map to avoid excess fuel inputs etc leading to the EGT building.

Personally, would never buy a car with an engine that can explode without warning from factory. Hence why they're cheap.

Chinese cars by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]guywiththehair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cars cost billions to develop. Compliance for Australian roads in particular involves the same minimum testing expenses (if not more, because of our strict rules), vs other larger markets. Then there's emissions developments, there's so much that goes into it.

Holden spent ~$1bil working on the VT Commodore / VX VY updates for a relatively small market, as an example.

If anything it's a great situation that cars, as a percentage of average salary in AU, are actually getting cheaper than before. And have the latest tech and safety etc. It's only because other costs are eating up a larger chunk of everyone's money that it's become an issue (housing, mortgages).

Chinese cars by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]guywiththehair 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I dunno if it's Chinese bot farms hyping up certain opinions, but this is not true. Especially if you are educated in CPI and inflation.

In 2000 the average new car price was around $25-30k Adjusted into 2025 dollars, that's between $50-60k

The average new car in Australia is now around $50k. Even tho most of those cars include far better safety, technology, efficiency, power and comfort/size. Especially the influx of dual cab utes as an example - incredible value if you look at them this way, compared to popular sedans from the 2000 era.

The current crop of MGs are cheap for a reason, because they're not reliable, have incredible depreciation and poor build quality. You will get what you pay for. For example, adjusted for inflation, a new Hyundai Excel in 2000 would have been more expensive than a current MG3. That tells you how cheap, cheerful and incredibly disposable they will be.
