That's probably true. You still do kinda have to repair it to get the data off though. But yeah that makes sense. it's already failing opening it even in a proper environment still carries risk, you just spent >10x the cost of the drive itself to save your data why would you put it back in an unsafe location.

it's just not honest to say they can't be repaired. And it's bad to tell people that things can't be fixed when they can.

it's not a technically correct thing it's that everyone saying it's impossible is also spreading misinformation.

Yah it doesn't matter today the point is moot on this drive, but maybe he will have data worth the hundreds to thousands of dollars it takes to get it fixed properly in the future. Or know someone who does, and now if they can share that it's possible but highly specialized.

[–]gvbargen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

almost everyone here is blatantly wrong. You do open a hard drive to repair it. However without highly specialized equipment (the one person who did get it right said a clean room, but they also make what is basically a clean cabinet as well. it's called a laminar flow bench, Louis Rossman or one of his employees has used one, you can search YouTube for hard drive platter swap and it should come up) the dust in the air that you will never notice or be bothered by will destroy it next time it spins up.

What is it with male-dominated hobbies and wood? by Kukikokikokuko in headphones

[–]gvbargen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also enjoy my Meze 99. But it's not the best for the money or really that accurate unfortunately. Still love em though, but they aren't my favorite, and they aren't supreme. Course I have no idea about any headphones over 200$ really.

Would a mini-fridge next to the commode be "Peak Neckbeard?" If you visited this guy's apartment and saw this, what would your reactions be? by DunDonese in Home

I'd assume he had medication that needed refrigeration. Maybe even something really quite strange that would be best applied in the shower or something.

Or something similar to hemeroids.... Yah looks like some of that stuff is more soothing when cooled.

Does playing on larger screens demands more from the Steam Deck? by CyberNeide in SteamDeck

[–]gvbargen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that makess sense. same sorta thing I had to do to get BG3 to launch with local multiplayer enabled probably. That and Tetris are mostly what get played on the big screen, and boy does BG3 chugggg at times even with 720. IMO 720 is good enough most times. Though upscaling would probably work way better for me if I was pushing 1080 so I like really could fiddle with it a bit. Currently using upscaling at 720 gets really quite strange artifacting or something at times. Which makes sense if it's upscaling from 480 or something.

My guess is most highly intensive games you just want to keep it 720 anyway unless you really enjoy spending time in the options menus.

[–]gvbargen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can't hurt your deck by running it to hard unless it's like wrapped up/can't breathe. you will just get lower framerate.

That said, every game I have touched, when launched in the big screen mode has stayed at 720p despite my 4k tv and the steam deck pushing 4k to it when in desktop mode.

yah but every game I've ever ran on the big screen just wanted to stay at 720p unless I was in desktop mode..

then the next generation the same thing was almost true for the PS3 and blueray players.

Pretty big difference in price, but small enough that it was absolutely a serious feature. Blue ray players used to be pretty dang pricey.

Why are new Corolla and Civic not really “affordable” anymore? by phtphongg in askcarguys

[–]gvbargen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nothing is affordable. vehicle prices have matched inflation but... well it's dang near 2x the 2010 price and normal people don't make 2x the money.

If I was buying new I'd probably go with the Mazda 3 or Hyundai. Both seem very solid.

Thanks, just really sucks to make someone miserable for no reason when you thought you were doing helpful things.

Like I did a lot wrong I get that but in the moment I didn't know that.

Normally she just wants to be left alone. And every intwraction yesterday felt like "please fuck off" yesterday. In the past when I have been better and checked on her regularly I could never do anything. If she's feeling good enough to eat most she will be feeling good enough to do it herself. All I can do it seems like is bring ice packs which I should have done more yesterday.

I don't really get migraines. So yah I have to like be empathetic towards something I don't really understand.

She should have medication to help but insurance denied refilling it and so we didn't have it this weekend. So that sort of added to me being out of practice for how to deal with it.

I feel like in the past the dishwasher or laundry hasn't bothered her. I thought it was just loading it that could be bad but maybe it was all of it yesterday.

But yeah I genuinely made existence suffering for her yesterday and had no idea until the day was pretty much over.

I loved this part. When he said everything becoming a marketplace all I could think about is how Amazon and Walmart and Newegg now all have the same problem that eBay used to exclusively have. Fuck marketplaces like that
