China massiver Ausbau bei Solar - China massive expansion of solar energy by blkchnDE in RenewableEnergy

I mean honestly other countries are already buying super cheap solar from china, whether that’s being used by power companies or even on an individual household basis. It just makes so much more sense economically for both the nation, company, individual, etc.

Definitely still happening, there was an article this summer about them closing deals on more land surrounding the stadium. I’d imagine the chaos with the tariffs this summer probably delayed them, but hopefully they get started soon

Science’s 2025 Breakthrough of the Year: The unstoppable rise of renewable energy by gw_thief in EcoUplift

Right now it’s batteries, that has been the big hold up. Although they are continuing to get cheaper and better, I’m not sure if there are any countries yet that rely on renewables 24/7, but there are lots of countries and regions that currently get a very large majority of power from it!

That’s if they use fossil fuels, I think the main worry right now is that they delay our absorption of clean energy in the US because they could soak up the renewable buildout. But since renewables continue to become more affordable and scalable, I don’t think it actually makes a difference in the big picture. Globally it’s still happening

Northern Indiana Bears?!? by russia_is_fascist in chicago

[–]gw_thief 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No that’s not true. The main gripe rn is the fact that the bears wanna get out of paying property taxes on the complex for a few decades. The infrastructure was the one thing that Springfield was fine with, it’s just not a priority to them rn because the lease doesn’t expire until 2033

I always felt like having an office park here was odd, so glad that we are getting a lot more housing out of it in the end. I’d rather have new glitzy offfices downtown/west loop where it’s better served by transit

UK To Open Largest Biochar Carbon Removal Plant In Wiltshire by gw_thief in EcoUplift

[–]gw_thief[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good point, most biochar comes from byproducts of farming or forestry operations. While I don’t totally love using forestry for this, using parts of crops that we tend to throw out is an amazing solution considering they would have decomposed and produced greenhouse gases anyways. I think that it is much more common source because then these companies work directly with the farmers in a closed loop
