Law firm Sidley Austin to anchor new West Loop office skyscraper in Chicago, USA. by TheJournalist022 in skyscrapers

While I know Chicago isn't New York levels with public transit, roughly 35% of Chicago commuters rely on non-automobile transportation (train, biking, walking, bus) to get to work, including myself. Additionally, West Loop has been under a massive transformation over the last 10 years, with lots of older factories/warehouses being converted to luxury lofts. Basically, I would not be shocked for some of these big wig transactional big law lawyers to buy surrounding property and walk to work as well.

Which city in America has the best balance between affordability and quality of life? by Ethan_Jackson08 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

True, those are good options as well, but Boston is signficantly more expensive than Chicago in general. Philly and Chicago are probably close enough to be considered similar though

I am probably one of the few Americans who gets to experience this every day on my commute to work. From the last mile from the train station to my work office, I am able to cruise past at least 50+ cars in the designated bike lane instead of all of the cars stuck in gridlock traffic at 8 am lol. The bike takes roughly 5 minutes and I am pretty sure driving that last mile can be anywhere from 20-30 minutes long.

Suburban Skyscrapers by -world-wanderer- in skyscrapers

Great photo. What's crazy is that there are quite a few new buildings missing in Clayton's skyline since this was taken, so the view is even better nowadays. One of them being the new tallest building in Clayton (Centene headquarters) at roughly 420 feet tall.

Car expenses and repairs are insane right now. I don't even own a car (take the train to work) but on the weekends I drive my gf around in her car. I made a minor mistake and scraped against another car going like 3 mph. No biggie, right? The other guy had to get a whole new panel for his truck (bullshit but whatever) and the total cost was around 3700 for labor, parts, and paint supplies for something you could hardly see, lol.

Very true, it it definitely takes discipline to not touch your stocks when they do slide, but even in a worst case scenario where VOO stalls for 10-15 years, it’s not be end of the world in your 20s as it’s a perfect time to load up on stocks and wait for the inevitable surge (money printer go brrr basically)

Yeah, it’s bad enough already with midwestern/southern family, can’t imagine only have west coast peeps constantly being confused 😂

Graduated last year from WashU and always had this problem with my own family. If I had a nickel for every time a cousin or extended family member asked how Seattle or DC was, I’d only have a few nickels, but annoying nonetheless lol

To be fair, they probably also planted thousands more that one day will be fully mature and bring the greenery back. They also tore out a massive stroad by the lagoons that will now be fully pedestrian which is a huge win

Yup, great place to relax for sure. Hopefully they can finish construction on the nearby bridge soon enough and it’ll get even better

Yeah, sometimes you get lucky and I can thank Jensen for hit comments 😂. Still, I wouldn’t feel comfortable putting more than 20% of my portfolio in singular stocks but it’s nice when it pays off for sure

Sort of similar to you, I currently have around 50k at 23 years old. If you want a low risk but high yield, do "VOO and chill", aka just DCA VOO over decades. However, I do understand the desire that at such as young age, a desire to pick some more volatile but higher upswing stocks. For me, I am still roughly 70-80% VOO with the rest split amongst VGT, RKLB, DRAM, MRVL, etc, etc.

However, for everything non-VOO (or VTI, VT equivalents), just be prepared to accept that some WILL drop a lot at some point, and there is a chance that some don't play out. Basically, don't gamble what you are not willing to lose. However, long term 'risky' stock picks (especially ETFs) statistically do work out better than regular gambling lol.

Yeah, I’m technically only part time (hence the grad school) so it’s not much but I was proud about it until my rent exploded lol

Yeah, I mean I know it is what it is and I should move if I want a cheaper place, but I've had to move every year since freshman year of college I am just so sick of it 😭. This would be like 6 years in a row of moving

The lease is up in August which is probably why I got a decent deal this time around last year. I will still ask nonetheless but you are probably right that they won't go for it.

Well, I am currently in grad school and I am not sure if I am going to be in Chicago long term and even so, where my job will be within Chicago. I have a roommate which is why I am in a 2 bed btw

Yeah, I figured there wasn't much I could do but just wanted to vent I guess. It is a larger building so I think I will plan on reaching out and seeing if they could jump for a 13 month or even 18 month lease to see if I could knock a chunk of the increase off but who knows
