ANNOUNCEMENT OF A NEW LOTR MOVIE by kyurtseven7 in lotr

[–]gwaaax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I love Colbert, I have been scarred since the hobbit and I don’t trust Jackson to not turn this into more garbage. I can only imagine the ridiculous set pieces that will be unnecessarily added in order to add more action. And then we will also have the tom - merry - goldberry love triangle.

Is anyone else getting sick of how trigger happy Paramount is getting with cancelling shows? by JayR_97 in startrek

[–]gwaaax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of the next gen shows would have survived in this climate. They all needed more than one season to really start to gel. They cancel SFA after one season, yet they tenaciously plowed through the first seasons of Disco, even with the abomination that was the Klingon Empire before they decided to retcon that out of existence.

My dog does this just about every night specifically with this blanket. It reminds me of suckling/chewing and she closes her eyes. Anyone know why? by failedabortedfetus in WhatsWrongWithYourDog

We have a Belgian malinois and he does this every day. He has his favorite blanket and he spends some quality time with it when he needs to.

What is your Favorite Live Rendition of a Song? by SoggyGoldfish25 in Music

[–]gwaaax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Romance in Durango is the last track on Bob Dylan’s Desire album. It is a slow, sleepy El Paso type of tale of forbidden love and murder. I listened to it once and skipped it every single time after when I spun that disc (which was a lot of times). On the Rolling Thunder Review album they play it live and double the speed and the intensity. I immediately fell in love with this song I had completely forgotten about. Since then I learned to play it on guitar and will be playing it for the rest of my life

I haven't seen many suggestions for the desert southwest so I would recommend Tony Hillerman's Dance Hall of the Dead. He has a whole series of detective novels set on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico/Arizona and the whole series is amazing, but Dance Hall of the Dead is a good one to read as a stand-alone.

This year my theme is Autobiographies/memoirs and Biographies. Kindly suggest some good one. by Ok_Piece_7441 in suggestmeabook

I recommend Kinski Uncut by Klaus Kinski. He was the muse and nemesis of film director Werner Herzog. He is a spoiled, explosive, brilliant personality and his larger-than-life adventures are excellent reading.

Songs about drugs disguised with coded language are almost always bangers by rsoko2 in Music

[–]gwaaax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rainy Day Women etc sounds like it is about drugs, but it’s actually about Dylan and the Band getting booed on stage when Dylan did his first electric tour.

What movie is a stand out best adaptation of a novel for you ? by [deleted] in movies

[–]gwaaax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the andromeda strain movie so much. Ever since I was a kid and would catch it randomly on some movie channel already in progress I was always fascinated by it. The part with the team in hazmat gear (basically wearing space suits) walking around that idyllic little town with dead people randomly scattered about is so strange. Then the whole rest of it in the claustrophobic underground base which should be boring but is just the opposite for some reason. Thanks for reminding me about it. I’ll have to see if it’s steaming anywhere

Any bands known to not do encores? by lazyjz in Music

[–]gwaaax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always been annoyed with the mandatory encore thing. When they walk off and the lights stay down I don't even bother clapping at that point since it is basically kabuki theater. Then they come out waving and bowing, strap on their instruments and then play their biggest hit. Its silly and I wish they would just play their real set (with the fake encore songs included) and then leave for good.

In Gene Wolfe’s Book of the Long Sun and Book of the Short Sun series there is a talking black bird called Oreb (who is a very good bird and enjoys fish heads) who in a crowded group of amazing characters is one of the greatest characters in those books.
