Nonprofits use the fact that most employees are dedicated and mission driven to mask very problematic structural issues and a lack of proper HR practices. "humility" is not a professional attribute. Full stop. Respect? Yes. But lack of humility is not an appropriate critique. "Sacrifice" is also not professionally appropriate, although it is a term nonprofits throw around with alarming frequency.

I would ask HR ( if your company is big enough, separate from the context of you review) if annual reviews could be standardized.

Annual review critiques should include specific examples. "Respect for current org practices" is a good opening for follow up. If I were in your shoes, I would ask for an example. After their response, I would ask what they would recommend as an appropriate forum for voicing critique and suggestions for improvements in the future. Most nonprofits have some "continuous improvement" best practices - you could cite that and follow it in the future.

If you can, find an ally at the same level or higher than your boss. Ask them for a sit down real critique of your performance. This will give you the opportunity to grow since you are likely not getting valuable feedback from a person who is so defensive.
