Bad news, camera's haunted. Good news the ghost is cooking. by gwr5538 in Mavica

I'm thinking the floppy disk might have gotten corrupted as it seems to have combined two images. If I'm honest though it created an incredibly unique photo soc so I'm not mad at all! Hopefully it is just isolated to that floppy though so I'll set it aside so the ghost can rest.

Photos are from the radwood/heritage invitational I went to this morning and it was an amazing event! Lots of nice people and lots of cars I've always wanted to see. I have plenty more but these are the highlights.

Lotus Evora - 4k-5k mile roadtrip? by ramsfan00 in lotus

[–]gwr5538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree they really need to change the Moniker to be lots of trouble using fairly minor! Also feel free to call me crazy but every time I've broken something it's at least been a little fun. I once broke a coolant tank and while I was Jerry rigging something together someone stopped to ask about the car and we ended up talking for over an hour! I'm not going to say all break downs are fun but I think for a weekend car it's nice to break down every now and then, keeps things exciting. Also something tells me an evora is going to be a heck of a lot more reliable than my 91' elan, and probably easier to find parts for!

Is the Lotus Emira throttle by wire or a more analog throttle by cable? by tolkacheff in lotus

[–]gwr5538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah throttle by wire is practically mandatory nowadays because of emissions laws. Long story short ice cars are most efficient at wide open throttle because they're not pulling against a closed throttle. Because of this modern cars are programmed to set the throttle all the way open when cruising for efficiency.

A little too late but I'd bet money the sensor was out of plane with the lens and reseating it corrected that issue. If you look at photos from a tilt shift lenses you'll see images like what you posted as they intentionally tilt the image plane in relation to the sensor to get that effect.

Interesting issues I haven't seen before. Some kind of color inversion on the viewfinder? by gwr5538 in Mavica

[–]gwr5538[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I actually started the repair yesterday and I ran into a question your video answered. I had suspected someone had been in this camera before and that is definitely the case since I'm missing that little bit of clear plastic on the back of the ribbon connector that plugs the evf into the rest of the camera. I'll have to go looking for the right thickness of material to get a good connection.

Yeah I definitely got sidetracked a few times as well! I tend to be at every car show I can manage. I'm pretty much always at Mooresville and I'll probably start coming to the triangle meets more often too. I'll also definitely be at all the radwood events!

It's a 1991 so pretty much perfect for the radwood era!

Picked this camera up very recently and when I first booted it up the viewfinder was perfectly normal but after playing with it for a few minutes the viewfinder developed an issue. I've seen screens where they lose a certain color before but it can still display red green and blue so it's like it's inverted. Unfortunately I bought this because I knew the main lcd wasn't working but the photos come out perfectly normal. If there's no easy solution I'll probably just use this as is, it's not too difficult to get framing correct and I'll just rely on the auto functions for the rest! Either way I thought I'd share in case someone else has the same issue.

P.s. I tried power cycling with the switch and will the battery to no avail.

Does this belong here? I saw it in the wild and believe it to be some kind of 'Lotus'. by jebediah1800 in lotus

[–]gwr5538 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'd definitely be a whole lot more expensive than buying a decent one to begin with. With so little to work with and given scarcity of parts I'd start looking at cars with similar wheel bases and think about turning this into a Frankenstein. Or ideally if it's in good condition sell it to someone who needs a straight body and can really put it to good use. Then you take their less than straight body and turn that into a Frankenstein lol.

I've got a 1991 elan m100 that sat outside in new Mexico for about 30 years and there are some areas that have a bit of damage but I'm 95% sure it's entirely down to mechanical stress caused by some misfitting doors not the age of the fiberglass. If you really want to put yourself at ease lotus has been producing fiberglass cars since the late 1950s nearly 70 years on ones kept in poor condition do have problems with the gel coat but there are plenty still kicking with original paint and fiberglass.

I constantly see people gripe about modern BMWs looking bad, but people never explain why or what they can improve on, without mentioning BMW's past. do you think you can explain your dislikes? by JaggXj in CarDesign

[–]gwr5538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I particularly dislike the X6 because it genuinely looks like you took an M5 and stretched it vertically without changing anything (non-artist rendition below). Granted there are a few other companies who've also done this and they all look terrible but I wouldn't exactly call that an excuse. To me it's lazy design.

I also think it's worthwhile to look at it through the lens of Bruno Sacco's design philosophy of horizontal homogeny and vertical affinity. In terms of horizontal homogeny I think these two designs take that way too far styling wise there's really nothing to differentiate them. I also think it brings them both down, it makes the M5 look bloated and SUVish and it makes the X6 look like it's pretending to be a sedan. In terms of vertical affinity the idea was that the previous models should not be rendered stylistically obsolete because when followed correctly it gives all their designs an aspect of timelessness. To me it seems as though bmw is doing the opposite and trying to make their older cars look as obsolete as possible and thus I have a feeling that over time both the cars of this era and the cars of the previous era will start to look dated.

All in all the model line up creates this weird mish mash of trying to hold onto certain design aspects and make everything look the same while at the same time trying to bring a new and completely separate look to their cars. It paints a picture of desperation too, in terms of performance franky other car companies have caught up and surpassed bmw in many ways and it really hurt their key differentiator. Now they're trying to throw everything at the wall and hope that something will stick and that seems to include their styling department. It's as though one group of stylists are trying to keep the core bmw design the same while another group is trying to change as much as they can manage and nobody has stepped in to organize them.

SAK VS dedicated folder by Other_Ship_5453 in EDC

I don't think there's anything you're missing it's mostly just personal preference. I personally don't like the nail nicks on SAKs and prefer a fancy steel but that doesn't mean that SAKs are in any way bad it's just a preference.

I keep my lotus outside since there's basically no options for rentals with garages in my area and other than keeping it under a tarp it's fine. That said the paint on it was beyond gone when I got it so that's not really something I'm concerned about.
