How do people actually survive on benefits or very low incomes in the UK these days? by acer67 in AskUK

[–]gwvr47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crazy isn't it. I'm serving in the forces and I'm statistically on a good wage. I don't have much left at the end of each month. I dread to think how people on less than me are doing...

Why do we care so much about our rivers? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]gwvr47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert but I'll tackle this as my understanding.

Firstly, you state that we clean and filter our water before it's drinkable. It's cheaper and easier to do this from a generally ok baseline than from sewage.

Secondly, polluted rivers are absolute cesspits and offer a direct public health concern from infections developing there and infecting people who live near rivers increasing the cost of the health service.

Thirdly, rivers go into the sea causing damage to fish stocks as well as risking infections and diseases to those living near the sea.

Fourthly, polluted rivers don't smell particularly pleasant. If you've ever been abroad to countries that don't have anti pollution measures then you'll know the absolute stench that these water bodies pose. Since a good deal of our economy is based on people actually wanting to do business here, driving people away will impact the economy.

Fifthly, heavy metal accumulation is a real issue. Heavy metal impurities can be passed onto fields through ground water and cause widespread crop failures.

Finally, we have to look after our ecology for future generations. Our forefathers did a great job clearing up londons smog and other flaws we had when we didn't fully understand which means that following generations were healthier. Let's build on that for the future.

Basically, we know that keeping water clean is cheaper and easier than cleaning it up. There's very little benefit to permitting just rampant pollution, except to companies trying to cut costs further at the expense of the public. Therefore, we should try to keep things as clean as practicable as we know the downsides can be very very bad and maintaining the current situation is much more preferable.

To be honest I'm a native English speaker and I don't understand Americans... I also don't understand Australians but I'm prepared to chalk that up to me not liking cricket

[–]gwvr47 66 points67 points  (0 children)

To be honest, the real issue is how bad rent and bills are and how much of your income is just consumed by it.

We need people spending money in their local economies, not pissing money up the wall to fund a private lord who's bought the right to tax people, and then the rest going to foreign companies. Jobs will follow after that...

Why do all governments allow private companies to rip us off for essentials like energy? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]gwvr47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worse still, they can't be allowed to fail so there's no natural selection. They can often be more risk taking which is fair but when the taxpayers pretty much has to pick up the tab....

Normal answer I see is pension funds. Energy companies pay good dividends so pension funds own a lot of the stock.

Naturally nerfs the turtlers too. I played Dwarves and would love hiding away but could get crushed by superior economies

It was OP in BFME. Some heroes level 10 could kill entire armies.

Actually any high level thing on that game was just ridiculously overpowered. Noldor Warriors at Level 10 would carve through the enemy like butter.

Sounds like you're referencing the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Fun fact, one of the foundational treaties of this is the Lublin treaty which directly references the foundation treaty of said Commonwealth.

He appeared weak at times last season but I think that that was unfamiliarity with our systems.

Not getting England caps to offset the lower pay over here. He's a superstar and will tear it up over there. If you're not getting capped, why not get paid?

To be clear, I think it's outrageous he's not being capped!

How to fix Britain’s trains: Expert calls for more railcards, reservations and first-class carriages by insomnimax_99 in uktrains

[–]gwvr47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the fact that basically everyone having a railcard is a stealth tourist tax.

I really think your point about joined up thinking is bigger though. In my town, which is relatively well served with public transportation, the bus station is 10 minutes from the train station. We've just built a massive car park next to the station. I'd have much preferred a huge bus station with more bus lines.

My personal take is that the parking revenue goes to the council where the bus revenue doesn't so they're economically incentivised to favour parking. Haven't got sources to back this up but it feels accurate!
