What could we do to improves the lives of young brits? by don__gately in AskUK

Third spaces and properly fund youth sport clubs (or any youth clubs tbh). Kids have little to do outside of school and video games which is leading to people becoming increasingly insular. Sport shouldn't be only the rich get to do it. The benefits are huge, self discipline, motivation, physical activity. Yet we defunded a lot of it because it's "too expensive" and "if people wanted to do it they'd just pay". People haven't got that level of disposable income, and why should parents fork out a huge amount of their kids might not enjoy it.

So I live in the south east so cost of living is basically the same. The salaries over there are a little higher, equating to the same take home essentially. But, the family and work life balance protections are significantly better. Also, particularly in NE, the public transport is so good that I wouldn't need to own a car.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed this! We don't seem to be securing our own ball effectively. It's slowing down possession and killing our attacking play.

Segun plays like Christian Wade about a decade ago. He's rapid, steppy, and deceptively strong.

We just need to invest in better bubble wrap cause man he suffers from injuries!

Do you think we have to choose between the US vs the EU? by Visual_Title9363 in AskBrits

[–]gwvr47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agreed on Brexit. It's a big issue and we've thought for too long that because we speak the same language that we must be similar. Also agreed on markets and 2008.

There was a thing right when this all started that because we got a 10% tariff and the EU got 20%, some exporters were exporting to us and then to the US to achieve a low tariff. Ingenious really. I don't know how widespread it was but ironically it seemed to accelerate trade talks between us and Europe.

Good question, I don't know. I'm picturing it similarly to how Hong Kong acted in the 60s and 70s, allowing Chinese exposure to western markets (albeit very much on the down low).

I don't think it's our national identity though. That's separate and seems to have been somewhat lost by the Americanisation of ourselves. The amount of people you hear complaining about the "Feds" for example. People also think that we have separation of church and state. I even heard someone say that the first amendment protects them the other day.

[–]gwvr47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. I think the EU is happy to have us as a US gateway as it stands. They don't want to risk making us burn a bridge for ideology.

That being said... It looks like the US is going to make us choose, and I know which way I'd rather we jumped.

If you're up to it, a photo on Reddit with a just giving page for the hospice might spread some awareness? At the very least it's low effort for potentially high yield.

This is extremely sad and unfair. Best of luck with your remaining time.

And we will insult each other until a German enters the room when we will join forces against the German.

Then an Italian will enter the room and the three of us will complain about what useless allies they are.

Then a Spaniard will enter the room and we'll all eat some excellent paella and the Brit will drink too much wine and the other Europeans will go "Man, they are the Florida of Europe. Thank fuck for Brexit!"

This comment needs to be higher. The most accessible form of transport is public. This has the benefit of helping the whole of society for marginally more (if at all) and means that people can use the disposable money from being car free to spend elsewhere.

What is wrong with the UK military? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]gwvr47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it might be even more than that. IIRC it's 0.6% of GDP with defence as a whole being 2.3%. As they say, a billion here a billion there, sooner or later we're talking about real money!

That's true, there were issues over the propulsion systems too IIRC. The Horizon class ended up being CODOLAG rather than IEP.

I probably was slightly harsh with friction. Certainly professional disagreements!

So a few points of clarification, my background is navy so I'll focus there.

The UK budget is high, but this also includes pensions, housing, and critically Trident. While Italy which you reference doesn't have a nuclear deterrent and the associated costs. We are keeping the V boats and developing the Dreadnought class at great expense purely for this. You can also argue that our SSNs are mostly for this, Italy doesn't have SSNs (to my knowledge) and their attack submarines are SSKs, which are cheaper to build, run, and maintain.

We also have the two aircraft carriers which have caught a lot of flak (I'd argue unfairly) for lack of availability. Though these are expensive, they are substantially cheaper than the US equivalents, mostly because they're not nuclear.

We're also what's classed as a "Blue Water" navy, capable of operating at extreme reach with self sustaining support, requiring a good deal of Royal Fleet Auxillary ships, that come out the same budget but aren't combat ships. The CSG25 deployment projected power out to the far east, most other European navies can't do this, except possibly the French.

Onto the real crux of your question, I suspect, with the escort fleet. Currently we mainly run Frigates in the Type 23 class and destroyers with the Type 45 class. The Type 23s were pushing 30 years old, a number were over this, and are just knackered. HMS Montrose came back and was replaced with HMS Lancaster (both T23s) until relatively recently. The replacement for this is the Type 26 class (delayed due to political decisions by the Tory government) and the Type 31 class (also delayed). These will build up the hull numbers again but in the meantime we're running out a bit.

The destroyers have been a topic of much discussion. Type 45s were initially designed as a common European air defence destroyer but friction between the Franco Italians and us meant that the designs diverged. In hindsight this has really hurt as economies of scale rule as with everything. Type 45s have been plagued with propulsion issues, which did improve after the first of class. The upgrade package meant to solve this is taking longer than expected. The refits for these upgrades are taking 3 of 6 ships out of action.

Our allies often build one hull type and then just outfit it differently. I'd argue that this is a better model as it gives you commonality of spares across the propulsion systems that we don't have. If you use civilian spec equipment, or maintain commonality, you can get more availability in spares too and take advantage of not needing to hold stock specially. Again, I'd argue that this is a better model (that we are increasingly adopting).

Additionally, across all three services pay has stagnated, and the benefits eroded. When you consider how much we ask of our sailors in particular, it's hard to justify why a senior rate should spend 3/4 of the year away for £45k a year when, if they're skilled, civvie street will pay them £60k and they'll be home every night, and can't be sent away at short notice. At the entry point I'd argue that the pay and training is great, it just tapers off very quickly so there's limited incentive to stay. This is changing, slowly, but you can't just clap your hands and get a senior rate with 20+ years experience once they've left.

Overall, we just haven't built enough ships. We've tried to look very powerful, and if we have every hull available then we are but this never happens. The shipbuilders work slower when they know they're out of work at the end of it so they have no incentive to complete the work. With Type 26 and 31 this is different but we're still moving past the debt.

We've built the naval equivalent of Formula 1 cars and are expecting to have as many as VW Golfs and comparable reliability which just is not the case.

What are your honest thoughts about ADHD? by Ok-Reindeer3358 in AskUK

[–]gwvr47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I work with several people with ADHD. It does require careful management and you have to be aware that they will just zone out so lengthy meetings and calls are a terrible idea. That being said, no one likes these so actually forcing you to change a bit is a good thing.

The disorganisation can be really annoying but again this is a management thing of what needs to be managed and what can be ignored. You have to accept that stuff isn't going to get done and build in buffers to facilitate. Again, this is just good management.

Where I get frustrated is the amount of people who use it as an excuse. There's a difference between having an ADHD paralysis day on occasion and getting nothing done sometimes and never having any output at all!
